To think I should be able to get us all a respectable smartphone for <£150 each?

Plan is for all 4 of us (me, DH, DS1 and DS2) to upgrade our smartphones at the same time and (probably) all get the same model. I'm happy to pay up to £150 each and we'd be fine with refurbished phones. I prefer to get them upfront rather than paying monthly.

Options are potentially iPhone 5s, Samsung Galaxy S5, or something else. Any recommendations or advice?

And if you think the phone you have for that budget is awesome, please tell me why, as all the information "out there" is bamboozling me.

I paid 190 for iphone 6 with a years Warrenty, you should be able to get a decent android on there and it's covered if it goes wrong. I wouldn't get an iPhone 5, either a 6 or above or a decent android. I'm still using a galaxy 5, it's been great.

Huawei P8lite. Brilliant handset for the money.

My nieces have Motos, one a G4 Plus and one a G5 Plus and they suck! The newest one has lost the front camera icon and nothing will fix it. For a teenager that’s the worst thing ever. The other one has gone haywire and randomly does what it likes when you’re in the middle of something. Nothing will fix that either. My eldest niece has just swapped hers in favour of an elderly iPhone 5. She’d rather have an older iPhone than a new Moto.

I have a ZTE Blade. It's a solid budget phone.

LoniceraJaponica · 20/11/2017 22:53

Another vote for Wiley Fox.

TheNoodlesIncident · 20/11/2017 23:02

I have a Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, and it was around £100 but in Indonesia, they don't sell them here except via importers. It's fab though

We have these, they are great Smile

BlackeyedSusan · 20/11/2017 23:08

@BroomstickOfLove just ordered same phone as I cracked my screen on my old one today. glad to hear you like it.

Possumfish · 21/11/2017 14:45

Have a look at one+ they have phones that easily compete with the flagships and are really cheap! I've got a one + three that I've had 3 years and it's still better/faster than most my friends phones!

pisacake · 21/11/2017 14:53

the oneplus 5+ is £449 though, not £150!

Roomba · 21/11/2017 15:02

Another vote for the Moto G4 plus here. I love mine, it runs multiple apps at once without ever lagging (much better than my kids expensive tablets do!), the camera is great, it does absolutely everything I need a phone to do and serves as my work device when I can't lug a laptop with me. Pretty impressive for under £150. Do make sure you get a decent shockproof case though (I have a Poetic one).

Firesuit · 21/11/2017 15:41

An LG G3 is about £100 on ebay. (Maybe a little more for best possible condition.) Not sure how it compares go Galaxy S5, which seems to be a similar price.

pmac62 · 21/11/2017 15:48

Yep, another family with Wileyfox phones. They are very good and picked by a techie husband

MsRinky · 21/11/2017 16:06

I think all Wileyfox phones must be bought on techie recommendation! Everyone I know who works for the company that developed all the iPhone graphics has one. I love mine. GiffGaff sim, job done.

MargoLovebutter · 21/11/2017 16:14

I always buy 2nd hand phones. A month ago, I upgraded to an iphone6 off ebay with 128 memory. It was a 'buy it now' for £175, which is of course a massive bargain but that is because it had a badly cracked screen. One new screen later & I have fully functioning iphone6 with vast memory for £205, which I thought was a good deal.

There are plenty of older models around for less than that. Have a look on ebay at sellers with good reputations and that will give you an indication of the going price for various phones.

LurkingHusband · 21/11/2017 16:18

Wileyfox support is shite.

Glitteryfrog · 21/11/2017 16:29

An older one plus should be £150 on eBay?
They've just launched the 5 so I expect people will be upgrading.
I've got a Samsung j5 which is perfectly pleasant for £170.

goshthatseemsalot · 21/11/2017 17:22

My DH had his iPhone stolen by one of those moped thieves in London. He reported it to the police for his crime number and they said it would be on eBay within an hour. It’s not all people upgrading.

pisacake · 21/11/2017 17:48

"An older one plus should be £150 on eBay?"

Battery might be spent though. Personally I'd just get a new £150 phone, there are some good ones.

PNGirl · 21/11/2017 17:54

My Sony XA1 is great.

RicStar · 21/11/2017 17:55

I have had my Moto g4 for ages no problems.

Trillis · 21/11/2017 18:03

We have had several motorola phones. My 15 year old is into his 3rd year with a moto G3, other son has a new moto G4 plus, which he loves (his old moto g4 was going strong until he went swimming in the sea with it in his pocket...). Hubby has moto E (cheaper model), but after 2 years it's starting to play up a bit and he's thinking of replacing. I would absolultly get a Moto G again though - and probably the G4 plus over the G5. Both are about £150.
