To take my handbag to bed with me

Ceebs85 · 18/11/2017 22:40

I don't like leaving my handbag with purse and car keys downstairs. I take it to my bedroom and keep it overnight by the side of my bed. This just seem common sense to me as if we were burgled they would be safer next to me.

Partner thinks this is ridiculous and takes the piss 'sure you don't want to take the TV to bed with you?' and other hilarious lines Hmm

Am I abnormal?

After having my car stolen to order many years ago, my keys always stay downstairs. I do not want them coming upstairs.

loveka · 18/11/2017 23:44

I don't think they would want my 5 year old Fiesta.

Every cloud...

Phone by bed though.

JennyOnAPlate · 18/11/2017 23:45

My car key is on the same ring as my house key, which is in the front door lock all night. No one would want to steal my old car though. Dhs car is much more desirable and his key is on the hall table next to his wallet. My handbag is in the kitchen. It’s never occurred to me to take any of this stuff upstairs.

littlemissneela · 18/11/2017 23:48

I only bring my handbag up when the kids have friends staying over, and I only do that because I put everything in I want to take upstairs with me in it (large bag, fits iPad, crochet, snacks etc). Usually it stays downstairs. My keys are hung on an inside door handle as we have stupid need a key to get out of the house when the door is locked locks, and I just take my phone with me as its my alarm clock.

lalalalyra · 18/11/2017 23:49

I leave my car keys and my school money purse (4 at school, it's easier to put bus fares etc in a purse that's easy access) downstairs. If they want it they can have it.

Changednamejustincase · 18/11/2017 23:49

I leave my bag, purse and keys downstairs in clear view on purpose. If someone breaks into my house I don't want them coming upstairs where my children sleep looking for things to steal.

Jinglebellhell17 · 18/11/2017 23:51

That’s madness. Once they are in your house you want them out as fast as possible. Someone willing to break into a house with people asleep in it isn’t someone I want to get to my kids while I’m asleep. The thought is pretty chilling. Hell I would want them near the cat!

My grandmother used to keep a couple of tin cans with pennies taped in them on a string next to the door. Before she went to bed she tied the string to her handbag so if someone grabbed it there would be a clatter that would wake her and scare them!

MyBrilliantDisguise · 18/11/2017 23:54

Your granny should've had this door stop alarm.

SquirrelTail · 19/11/2017 00:00

That's okay to do that. I don't own a car but I keep my handbag in my wardrobe with clothing. It's easier then as alternate bags according to what I'm wearing and it's a designated spot I always know it will be in. If you are worried about security keep a knife under your mattress and put an extra lock on your door which you can lock from the inside, at least then if anyone starts trying to force entry to your bedroom while you are sleeping the noise will wake you immediately and if they do get in and come towards you you only need to take one swing to their face to do major damage and get out.

bluetongue · 19/11/2017 00:01

If they wanted to steal my car it's old enough that they could probably do it without keys Grin

Always leave my keys in the door. Much more worried about being trapped in a fire than burglars.

nancy75 · 19/11/2017 00:05

Keep a knife under your mattress?? You win the award for stupid comment of the day! There are very few women that would not be easily disarmed by a man in this situation, now you have a burglar with a knife in your bedroom rather than just a burglar ffsHmm

Jinglebellhell17 · 19/11/2017 00:07

For all that is good and holy don’t stick a knife under the bed! You’re far more likely to have it used on you! Or for a child to find it.

PyongyangKipperbang · 19/11/2017 00:13

If you are worried about security keep a knife under your mattress

That is the most dangerous advice ever.

For a start, never carry a weapon you are not prepared or trained to use and most people are simply not capable of knifing someone and if they are then they are probably the ones doing the stealing.

Secondly, you have to get up close and personal to use a knife, which leaves you at great risk of the knife being taken and used on you instead.

Thirdly, you could end up in more trouble than the burgular if you mange by some fluke, to do them damage.

A weapon simply ups the ante so that an intruder is more likely to attack you than simply take what they want and fuck off.

CheekyFuckersAreEntertaining · 19/11/2017 00:15

I always did that!
Not so much these days because of laziness but back when I had nothing but the money in my purse, my bag was right there in my bedroom each night. These days all you'd get is a couple of store cards, my 20 year old NI card, my BC pills and a kids first aid kit from my bag. Car keys are kept separate and my iPhone is beside me at all times. As are my important bank cards in the phone case.

Escapepeas · 19/11/2017 00:17

FFS, don’t keep a knife under your mattress! Unless you know how to use it and are prepared to stab an intruder to death, the likelihood is that it would be taken off you and used against you.

Your stuff can be replaced. You cannot. No matter how unjust it seems, if someone wants your stuff, let them have t and live to see another day.

3catsandcounting · 19/11/2017 00:21

As a side question here, why would you keep your house keys and car keys separate? I know quite a few people that do this, but have never questioned why!
(all these people have their own cars (not shared)

Linning · 19/11/2017 00:24

I live on ground floor and my bedroom is right next to the door and has a big window that gives right to the street so if someone was to break in I would assume my room would actually be the place they would enter the flat. Confused The thought of it happening does scare me a bit but I have got an alarm system and like to think the risk is low. My purse and all of my valuables are in my room though as if someone was to break into my room I would rather they have access to everything and leave as soon as possible. If I was living in a two story house I would definitely leave my purse downstairs as the last thing I want is someone erupting into my bedroom in the middle of the night. There is nothing in my purse that would be worth the risk of facing a bulglar tbh so they can have it all!

nancy75 · 19/11/2017 00:27

Nowadays most of us have hardly any cash in our bags, cards can be cancelled and replaced in a couple of days & cars are insured - just don’t understand why anyone round take their bag & keys to bed!

Bowerbird5 · 19/11/2017 00:28

Don't be too sure loveka I've had two cars stolen neither were new or special except one was an estate and they used it for a robbery. I knew the manager and the police were accusing us at first. I couldn't convince them I hadn't heard it go. I had a three week old baby. I slept when he slept. I had two other kids too.

LinaBo · 19/11/2017 00:30

3catsandcounting, I keep mine separate because my dad told me many years ago that if the key ring is too heavy, it can wear out/damage the ignition and stuck with me* - plus I like to be able to just put my house keys in my pocket if I pop to the shops or go on the school run and my car key is too bulky. DH has his car key, a spare key for my car, his house keys and all his work keys in on key ring, it's very heavy and bulky!

*my car is ancient, might not apply to newer cars.

PyongyangKipperbang · 19/11/2017 00:37

why would you keep your house keys and car keys separate?

Because if I lose a set of keys it is only one set and not both. This is also why I keep my keys in my pocket when I am out and not in my bag so if my bag is snatched the thief doesnt have my address (on my driving licence) and my house keys so could potentially do over my house before I even realise they are gone.

I cannot imagine why anyone would keep them together tbh.

kissmelittleass · 19/11/2017 00:38

I always leave my bag on a shelve in my wardrobe every night. The car and keys are left on hall table. I do lock my bedroom door every night so don't know if they'd bother knowing door was locked and would wake everyone in house.

oldlaundbooth · 19/11/2017 00:43

I don't see a problem with this personally.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 19/11/2017 00:43

Oh God the warm kettle! I would never sleep again if that happened in our house.

kissmelittleass · 19/11/2017 00:44

Haha I'd have a job to leave the car on hall table!! I meant car keys and house keys left on hall table!!!
