If you live in Southampton (near hospital)

Hiya. Live in the Channel Islands but mum is going to Southampton hospital for an operation.

Would like to find a b&b near hospital (cheap n cheerful) either walking distance or a cheap taxi fare for dad to stay in for two nights whilst mum in hospital.

Sorry to post in aibu - it’s for traffic.

Wanted personal experience as Google not always truthful about distances Grin and I’ve only ever been to England once so not very good with these things.

Thanks in advance Flowers

There's a few in near by Shirley but I don't think there are any bnbs within walking distance...

FiveGoMadInDorset · 16/11/2017 19:14

I ended up staying at Premier Inn in West Quays when DH was in hospital in Southampton, gave me something to do when I was there, although friends live just outside Romsey and they said they were 10 'mins drive from the hospital so may be worth looking there as well?

Mollie85 · 16/11/2017 19:14

Ah thanks- I’ll investigate further

On the hospital website there is a list of places to stay, a hard copy is available from Reception. Please be aware parking is a complete nightmare at the hospital. Good luck and best wishes to you and dh.

Is your Dad going to spend most of the time with your Mum or only visiting hours? How far is he up for walking? Staying closer to town might be more helpful. Just looking online, Brunswick lodge is walking distance and in an OK area, but if your Dad’s not much of a walker Dale Road is steep up to the hospital. He could also pop into Shirley from there for supplies/food. The hospital has a swanky newish M&S in the lobby.

vixo · 16/11/2017 19:58

There are a few of the cheaper hotel chains to cater for the cruise market in town, and good bus links to the hospital so that could be a reasonable option.

The advantage of being in town would be lots of restaurants, cinemas, shops etc, so he would have something to do when he's not at the hospital which isn't just sitting in a b&b room!

The Highfield house hotel is on a bus route and just in portswood with some cafes etc very nearby, and might be quieter than in town.

I don't know about b&b's within walking distance of the hospital - it's not particularly a b&b area!

I live in Southampton, feel free to PM me. I can't think of anywhere that is particularly close to the hospital, there are lots of B&B places around Hill Lane which is the closest I can think of. We have Uber here which is very low cost, and the hospital is well served by bus.

Davenotdave · 16/11/2017 20:05

There's a few B&Bs on and around hill lane, not sure of names though, and more in the polygon nearer the mayflower, both quick journeys by taxi.
If your dad can do buses (they are all accessible), the number 3 first bus goes frequently through town up to the hospital, it might be worth looking at the route and finding a place near one of the stops.
I hope it all goes well

Brunswick Lodge, I00 Anglesea Road, Shirley, Southampton, SO15 5QS
02380 774777. 15 mins walk from the General.

Mollie85 · 16/11/2017 20:49

Thank you all so much for your help- I’ll google the ones you’ve said.

Parking won’t be an issue - they are traveling from Gsy- Southampton by plane.

My dad is 66 and fairly fit, but might be worried about getting lost, etc.

Is an Uber a taxi or a bus? (sorry for ignorance)

Thanks so much Grin

princesspeach21 · 16/11/2017 20:50

@Mollie85 Uber is like a taxi service in that it's a private hire vehicle however you need a smartphone to book. But if your dad has one it is much cheaper than a taxi and also more convenient.

Jenijena · 16/11/2017 20:51

Brunswick lodge to the hospital is very simple. Might get lost in the hospital but it’s hard to miss, great big building on the top of the hill and well signposted.

princesspeach21 · 16/11/2017 20:54

Also the train is a good option from the airport, very straightforward and a short journey, it goes right into the middle of town (which isn't awfully far from the hospital). Hope things go well for your mum Flowers

Mollie85 · 16/11/2017 20:57

Thanks very much! I don’t think my parents have ever been on a train so will not encourage that! Grin

I’ll do a bit more research but thanks so much for all your replies and for turning a blind eye to my ignorance Grin

I’m local and would probably stay at the Holiday/Premier Inn in Central Southampton, and just get a taxi/Uber to the hospital. Would only take 10 mins, and means you’re central for food etc.
Feel free to message me if you want!

Thingywhatsit · 16/11/2017 21:08

Hi

Ask at the hospital travel office too for ideas of where they book for patients that don't require inpatient stays. Also you will definitely want to look at roaming charges on mobiles, So try find a Provider that counts Guernsey landlines as a uk call - some don't. Will save you a fortune than using a gsy mobile.

Mollie85 · 16/11/2017 21:15

Thanks again.

We will probably just whatsapp. I don’t have a Land line so will have to be mobile. Luckily its only for two nights, but unfortunately the holiday inn and the premier inn are booked so far the two nights, so I may call the hospital travel office Grin

I’ll get there thanks to all your help Wine

Try phoning Meller House. It's within the hospital. I'm a nurse at Southampton and some of our patients with relatives from afar use it. www.uhs.nhs.uk/PatientsAndVisitors/Visitorsandfamilies/Accommodationforrelatives/MellerHouse.aspx

RaymondinaReddington · 16/11/2017 21:48

There is a premier inn at Nursling which is only 1-2miles from the hospital.

BMW6 · 16/11/2017 22:18

You know that there is more than one hospital in Southampton OP?

MrTrebus · 16/11/2017 22:20

Stick with something well known and nice like a Travelodge or premier inn. Dear Lord don't stay in a b&b in Shirley!

beachygirl · 16/11/2017 22:34

Jury's Inn are very well set up and used to dealing with hospital visitors/patients at Southampton Hospital. They handle all the Isle of Wight patients needing hospital services. Note sure about price though. www.jurysinns.com/hotels/southampton

furlinedsheepskinjacket · 16/11/2017 22:39

another poster saying book a room in a hotel chain in southampton and taxi or bus in to the hospital

no b and bs near hospital

hope it goes well :)

TeenTimesTwo · 16/11/2017 22:44

You do mean The General (and not the South Hants)?
Everyone is assuming you mean the General.

LooseWoman1 · 17/11/2017 04:54

If you live in Guernsey you need to phone the health information exchange - phone book will have the number or Social Security Dept travel dept will - About the accommodation set aside at Jury’s Inn and other establishments (think there’s one called heart house) for Channel Islands patients. If in Jer you could phone the Guernsey one anyway who I’m sure would be happy to advise.
