AIBU to ask for your "All You Can Eat" restaurant tips?

I'm visiting an establishment in a few weeks that offers an "all you can eat" buffet type deal of foods from around the world. How can I get my money's worth?

Avoid fizzy drinks I assume. Don't want Co2 taking up precious stomach room.

Should I have a big meal the day before to prepare?

Eat slow?

Tips please. I want the restaurant to remember my visit as "Run Out Of Food Saturday".

Fill up in the high value items - meat and fish. Leave the bread out of it (unless it's great - which it rarely is) it's just empty carbs designed to fill you up and throw you off your game.

Don't overfill your plate on the first go- it always puts me off. I make lots of mini trips.

I make it a challenge to try and eat more than the cost of entry - I haven't failed yet. Good luck on your quest! 😁

Ensure it's a busy restaurant & that they cook fresh food and dispose of old food regulaly

Otherwise you will remember it as "that Sunday I was so ill"

GummyGoddess · 15/11/2017 19:00

Make a list of the cuisines that you want to try and prioritise them, then it won't matter if you are full as you'll have tried the most important food.

LaurieFairyCake · 15/11/2017 19:01

The last time I went to a round the world buffet I had the shits for about 4 days.

Worst. Meal. Ever.

Caspiana · 15/11/2017 19:03

Eat through the pain barrier, you can always fit more in Grin

Bringing a Tupperware box to take stuff home is frowned upon.

Grilledaubergines · 15/11/2017 19:11

Don’t do it. Stay home. It is the most revolting display or greed, waste and poor manners you’ll ever come across. It’s not a dinner, it’s an exercise in watching people shovel food in their mouths to get their ‘monies worth’.

Goldenbug · 15/11/2017 19:13

The sushi sounds good but I'm concerned about unnecessary rice filling me up. The Tupperware box method was discussed with the people I'm going with and it was frowned upon by most.

There's a huge choice of cakes and mini-desserts. Maybe I should work backwards through the menu?

My local Indian buffet lets you buy a tub to fill and take home.

MytToeHurtsBetty · 15/11/2017 19:18

Ooooh is it the grange? Went once loooooved it

PavlovianLunge · 15/11/2017 19:20

Don’t go when you’re very hungry, have some lunch that day.
Think about what you enjoy most - if you love deserts, don’t overdo the starters and mains. Or if you do overdo it, give yourself time to recover to tackle the puds.
No fizzy drinks, better stick to wine.
Avoid bread/poppadoms/prawn crackers.

Graze.
I find a little salad to start sharpens my appetite, and is at least a nod towards healthy eating.
Avoid soup.
Don’t fill your plate - it you like something, you can have more.
Avoid pasta and noodles, or, if you love them, have a small amount.
Don’t have a lot of fried or greasy food.
If it’s self-service, watch out for double-dippers.
Take your time, it’s a marathon, not a sprint.

Have a great time.

divadee · 15/11/2017 19:22

High value items always so duck, good fish etc.... steer clear of chips, bread and rice as much as possible.

Grumpbum · 15/11/2017 19:24

If they have one avoid the chocolate fountain, last one I went to had 2 girls sticking their fingers in, licking and repeating. Grim

Crumbs1 · 15/11/2017 19:29

What a truly revolting idea. I suspect it’s buffets where there is a high risk of toxic pathogens. Avoid rice, anything in mayonnaise, ask about holding temperature and don’t eat lukewarm food.
Go to a nice restaurant where you can have food cooked to order.

gobbynorthernbird · 15/11/2017 19:30

How much will you be paying for this meal?

PavlovianLunge · 15/11/2017 19:31

Bringing a Tupperware box to take stuff home is frowned upon.

I was at a huge all you can eat brunch thing last week. Towards the end of her meal, the woman at the next table came back with two huge bunches of grapes. She ate a few, put the rest in her handbag, got up and left. Shock Hmm

Goldenbug · 15/11/2017 19:33

Wasn't me who picked it Crumbs. It's a work thing.

And I never do chocolate fountains. Not after that fat German kid nearly drowned in one.

The cost is about the same as an average evening eaty place. £17.

Can't name them as that would be advertising.

I went to one with my mum (peachy keens), we want at lunch and got there for when they opened so good wasn't out for ages.

It was actually really nice (though we did a week day so it was quieter than a weekend would be).

I have to say though, neither of us are not then we usually would. We did have 3 courses but our main courses were smaller than you usually get in restaurants as we're out desserts.

Even though we didn't over do it, it was still only £14 each including wine which a thought was excellent value.

SilverySurfer · 15/11/2017 19:36

Grilledaubergines pretty much said it all.

Try to avoid doing what I saw a man do the one and only time I went to one of these places, which was to pile his plate with about four inches of different sliced roast meats, some of each veg, several yorkshire puddings - he then piled salad on top, poured on a couple of spoonfuls of salad dressing, went back to the hot food counter and topped off the by now teetering pile with a couple of ladles of hot gravy. [boak]

It put me off for life. Little and often sounds a good idea.

moonamanda · 15/11/2017 19:37

I've never been to one, how does it work? Is it like hotel buffet breakfasts?

LaurieFairyCake · 15/11/2017 19:38

I know where you mean I think

Can you come back the next day so I can smugly bemoan your fiery arsehole ?Grin

I stuck to salmon, prawns, duck, steak and literally shat through the ring of fire

Dh stuck to pizza and was fine Hmm

Bambamber · 15/11/2017 19:39

If you really want to get your money worth do a tactical poop halfway through the meal to make room for more Grin

MiraiDevant · 15/11/2017 19:39

This is disgusting. I cannot believe people think like this. Horrible, greedy, utterly without shame.

HemanOrSheRa · 15/11/2017 19:40

Lay off the carby stuff - rice, noodles, chips. Try and make it a 3 course thing rather than dumping everything on your plate. It is what it is and it's all about the game plan!
