AIBU to ask for your "All You Can Eat" restaurant tips?

I'm visiting an establishment in a few weeks that offers an "all you can eat" buffet type deal of foods from around the world. How can I get my money's worth?

Avoid fizzy drinks I assume. Don't want Co2 taking up precious stomach room.

Should I have a big meal the day before to prepare?

Eat slow?

Tips please. I want the restaurant to remember my visit as "Run Out Of Food Saturday".

Only time I've ever been to one, the sushi was shite. Only the curries were worth eating TBH so I stuck to those.

catgirl1976 · 15/11/2017 19:41

I'm afraid I actually managed to break one

There was a Thai restaurant near me which did an all you can eat buffet.

I visited it with my BF (who loves food) an and our respective DPs. I was 8 months pregnant and hungry. BF was hungry on my behalf. The food was lovely.

BF and I tucked in. After several hours and 900 plates of mixed hor d'ouevres a while our DPs became disugsted with our ability to eat and left.

Eventually, sated, we left too.

The next day there was a new sign on the door which read "All you can eat buffet is now limited to 1.5 hours"

I think it may be my proudest moment. I tell DS he is 90% Tod Mun Pla Grin

I might have an idea of where you are going OP, is it a chain thats advertised as 'pan asian'?
If so, stay away from

HemanOrSheRa · 15/11/2017 19:42

Hahahaha! cat you were like Homer Simpson in that episode in the all you can eat seafood place Grin.

BarbaraofSevillle · 15/11/2017 19:42

There's dozens of these places around so it's unlikely anyone knows where the OP is going.

BexleyRae · 15/11/2017 19:43

Sorry stupid slow internet!
Stay away from Italian and english- too many carbs. Fill up on Chinese and Japanese and leave room for dessert

catgirl1976 · 15/11/2017 19:43

Exactly Heman Grin

Notso · 15/11/2017 19:43

Lurk to pounce on something freshly cooked then sit back and witness the grim spectacle of all you can eat.

IHaveBrilloHair · 15/11/2017 19:44

Drink water only, and you'll need gallons, the food seems to be really salty.
Walk around first and have a good look at everything so you've an idea of what you want to try.
Take small bits of your favourites first.
Keep cuisines separate, you might love roast lamb and gravy, and sweet and sour pork, but they won't taste good together.
Avoid anything boring you often eat, bread, chips, plain rice are good examples.
The desserts are terrible, really terrible, value range trifles and biscuits are better, don't bother saving room for them.

dotdotdotmustdash · 15/11/2017 19:44

In a documentary about these restaurants (the million calorie buffet), the owners admitted that you would have to eat about 7 full plates of food for them to be even close to making a small loss on you.

Goldenbug · 15/11/2017 19:44

Not "Pan Asian". More "Authentic World Kitchen".

I will lay off the carbs and poo at least once an hour. I'll be like a tube.

Don't go.

Vile, horrible places. I never enjoy them. Would rather pay £17 for a main meal and have a bar of chocolate when I got home.

My family love them tho and often go when it's a birthday or celebration.

If I have to I walk around, chose a starter and eat it. Choose a main and a sensible side and eat it. Choose a dessert and eat it.

No good ever comes of a plate of onion bhaji, with a duck pancake roll, garlic mushrooms and salad and a side of garlic bread. Followed by a plate of chowmein sunday dinner lasagne with a side of chips garlic bread popadum wedges. Followed by chocolate fudge cheesecake trifle with ice cream fruit profiteroles.

No good whatsoever unless you enjoy bloating and nausea followed by a 3am shit your pants belly ache.

IhaveChillyToes · 15/11/2017 19:47

I saw a TV programme about them

The expensive food is at the back near the kitchen entrance/exit

Cos people feel unsure about taking loads from near the kitchens where staff will see them

Google "all you can eat" TV challenge programme and you will see all about it

busyboysmum · 15/11/2017 19:47

I just go for protein and veg and avoid the carbs altogether.

When we go to our local one with the kids it costs around £30 for our family so I don't feel the need to go mad.

I usually have prawns and squid for starters then Chinese steak and steamed veg main and loads of fresh fruit for pudding.

HillaryWinshaw · 15/11/2017 19:48

Ugh. Gross. Keep an eye on when the hot plates are refreshed. And remember that cheap crappy food is still crappy food.

And I suppose I need to watch out for finger lickers, double dippers, food replacers, beardy faces, heavy breathers, messy sneezers and other unhygienic types.

catgirl1976 · 15/11/2017 19:51

Wizard I was hungry and pregnant.

I actually ate one tiny, thai fish cake. DS ate the rest (in utero). You can vom shame him not me Grin

MyDcAreMarvel · 15/11/2017 19:53

Red Hot buffet? You can name restaurants.

user1492970817 · 15/11/2017 19:54

Granddaughters always pick one of these places for Birthday meals, only because of the chocolate fountain. Ugh the mere thought of all the times that chocolate has just been reheated to melt again.

GetOutOfMYGarden · 15/11/2017 19:58

If it's one of the places where they offer custom cooked things at certain stations, take full advantage of that and get stuff done fresh. If not aim for duck, beef, salmon etc.

Alicetherabbit · 15/11/2017 20:04

Sounds like Jimmy's it's fab and cocktails are great, but desserts aren't worth saving room for. They do some freshly cooked stuff though.
Never eaten my monies worth I just like the picky aspect

DullAndOld · 15/11/2017 20:05

is it in Reading?
