AIBU to ask for your "All You Can Eat" restaurant tips?

I'm visiting an establishment in a few weeks that offers an "all you can eat" buffet type deal of foods from around the world. How can I get my money's worth?

Avoid fizzy drinks I assume. Don't want Co2 taking up precious stomach room.

Should I have a big meal the day before to prepare?

Eat slow?

Tips please. I want the restaurant to remember my visit as "Run Out Of Food Saturday".

What's wrong with bean salad

zukiecat · 15/11/2017 20:50

I love our local Cosmo

Don’t have Jimmy Chung’s anymore, we did have four, but they gradually closed them, then the big one at the beach burned down and never re-opened

DD2 go at lunchtimes as evening prices are out of my price range, so we mainly go for a lunchtime treat, maybe two or three times a year

We don’t overfill our plates, and never have more than two plates really. I don’t do dairy so the only desserts I ever have are lychees or grapes

The steak they cook on the spot for you is always lovely

Never had any issues with the food, or any problems afterwards either

ClashCityRocker · 15/11/2017 20:53

I was pleasantly surprised by the food at cosmos. The pizza was actually rather good, as were the fresh cooking stations.

I don't really get my monies worth I suspect but it hits the spot.

dustarr73 · 15/11/2017 20:54

The Jimmy Chunga here( Dublin) is not as nice as it was.Its got expensive as well.Cosmos is Great, went one Sunday the kids loved It.Always packed.

Maelstrop · 15/11/2017 20:56

Have a good look round before taking anything. I love these places but the dh hates them so we only get to go when they're down. I get tiny amounts of what I like, can't bear the far too full feeling.

MistressDeeCee · 15/11/2017 20:59

Id do meat and fish, absolute bare minimum carby stuff such as rice or noodles. Then Id hammer the desserts. & if they've no custard I'd bloody well bring my ownGrin

SuperT3d · 15/11/2017 21:00

Stick to vegetarian options. I never trust meat at these places, though there is a lovely place where you order your personalised buffet which is cooked fresh and brought out on sharing trays to your table. You can order several times from the buffet starters before ordering your main and no one has had their paws all over it :-)

Dandelionflower · 15/11/2017 21:07

zukiecat is that Aberdeen you're talking about?

Bennygoak · 15/11/2017 21:46

Or have other beach side Jimmy Chungs burned down?

IHaveBrilloHair · 15/11/2017 21:49

I get my money's worth as I leave full and have eaten the food I wanted to eat.

Falconhoof1 · 15/11/2017 21:50

Once went to one where the was a brown powder beside the ice cream. DH thought it was cinnamon or something sweet for sprinkling on top so went ahead. It was curry powder. And he still ate his curry ice creamEnvy- not envy.

oldlaundbooth · 15/11/2017 21:51

MGM Vegas buffet was amazing.

Keepingupwiththejonesys · 15/11/2017 22:03

I am dying at some of these comments, funniest thing ever. Trying my best not to wake the kids laughing!!

Those going on about how disgusting it is, ffs lighten up. If you don't like them then don't go. I reckon at least 90% of people who go to these places go rarely so if they wanna be a pig that day so what. I go to one all you can eat place once, possibly twice a year. I eat loads when there but wouldn't any other time

Rachie1973 · 15/11/2017 22:03

Not a massive fan of Cosmos, but we have an all you can eat Chinese buffet in Basildon called Aroma. Its fab!

Geordielassinacoat · 15/11/2017 22:12

We spent three weeks in Argentina and the all-you-can-eat buffets are A-MAZING! Over there the centre stage is the meat, so amazing quality steak etc, but the other cuisines were great too. One posh one we went to in Buenos Aries had a CHEESE WALL!

steppemum · 15/11/2017 22:13

the very best all you can eat in the world is our local chinese.

Very nice, excellent food chinese (really lovely, in a different league to your average take away)

You pay one price and then can order whatever you like from the menu - cooked fresh to order, and keep ordering until you are all stuffed

tis awesome (and expensive, we go about once every 2 years!)

NameGotLostInCyberspace · 15/11/2017 22:14

Cosmos in Oxford usually has many Chinese customers. This signals to me that the Chinese food is very goodWink

StickThatInYourPipe · 15/11/2017 22:15

And I never do chocolate fountains. Not after that fat German kid nearly drowned in one

Ffs - did this really happen? Desperately needing a name or a link ;)

londonrach · 15/11/2017 22:15

Dont go!

OohMe · 15/11/2017 22:36

I know someone who used to work in Cosmos in Reading. I wouldn't go there but not because of the food. 🙊 Its busy and popular. It's down market but it is what it is 🤷🏻‍♀️

I actually think all-you-can-eat is a great idea for work get togethers. A set price makes everything simple and there is lots of choice.

I wonder why people are so snooty about all-you-can-eat restaurants but hotel all-you-can-eat breakfast buffets or all inclusive holidays are ok. 🤔

We used to go to the Bombay Brasserie in London for their buffet Sunday lunch. It was incredible and I ate way too much every time. 😳

OohMe · 15/11/2017 22:38

Stick. Does this ring any bells 🤣

(Or are you joking ..... )

JustGettingStarted · 15/11/2017 22:39

The very idea of the all-you-can-eat buffet seems to make British people nervous. There's gotta be a downside! An angle! A scam!

Hueandcry · 15/11/2017 22:47

I know where you're from zukiecat 😁

Bluntness100 · 15/11/2017 22:48

Maybe a silly question but why are Tupperware boxes frowned upon?

Because it’s all you can eat there, not all you can eat tomorrow, or an opportunity to do your weekly shop. Hmm

Titsywoo · 15/11/2017 22:55

Oh god I went to one of these last year. The food was awful. I did manage to find a few things that I liked. I didn't gorge myself silly but I felt awful for over a week. Ingestion for days and the shits all week. Never again!
