Now, I might be enjoying this fall out because my DS went to the HelloWorld event and was badly ripped off (a YouTuber event which went terribly wrong) but finally Zoella is being challenged on her over priced tat merchandise. Particularly her advent calendar which is £50 FIFTY FUCKING POUNDS for the likes of confetti, 2 tiny candles, a thin copy book and a Pom Pom!

www.boots.com/zoella-12-days-of-christmas-advent-calendar-10235552

Social media is going mad, there are thousands of tweets, a viral video lampooning it is doing the rounds and it was discussed on 5Live last night.

Is anyone watching this fall out?

Do we think this will finally be the end of these terrible, vacuous idiots? Or am I too optimistic?

I would definitely recommend showing it to your children if they are fans of Zoella

Not unless there is a "radio edit" without the swearing :o

Smellyrose · 13/11/2017 18:50

Has anyone got a link to the Helloworld thread? Dad is getting interested in YouTube but so far it’s just slime and minecraft!

IceRebel · 13/11/2017 18:53

@SoupDragon Ah they hear worse at school Grin Besides what's a bit of swearing if you can save £50 Wink

Some fans are primary school age, the language wasn't that bad at DD's old primary!

Thankfully DD only thinks she's "OK" and laughed when I told her about the £50 calendar of crap. Although I didn't call it that.

SoupDragon · 13/11/2017 19:01

I did have to explain the phrase " exploited children" when describing the scent of the candle. I must talk to her English teacher.

IceRebel · 13/11/2017 19:02

Glad to hear your daughter is a sensible sort, although I had no idea primary school children were interested in her, I thought it was more the 11-14 year old age group. Also Calendar of crap is a much better name, you should go into marketing. Smile

DryHeave · 13/11/2017 19:03

Shameless. Zero integrity.

Expect will now go into hiding/claim to have hurt feelings over the whole thing.

thegreylady · 13/11/2017 19:03

Last year I got the Zoella one for £20 as a Boots special offer. It was just about worth it and dgd loved it. I didn’t actually believe the £50 RRP until now. I won’t be getting one this year.

NameChanger22 · 13/11/2017 19:07

I like a few YouTubers, I wish they would speak like normal people though and be a little bit less enthusiastic about everything. I'm always happy when DD moves on to a new YouTuber because some of them are a bit annoying.

I've never bought their tat (merch as they call it) but I have bought stuff they've bought in Primark hauls etc.

PNGirl · 13/11/2017 19:10

Zoella is nearly 28. Some of the mums of her "fans" are the same age. I don't know why this doesn't compute with tweens!

She won't go anywhere. Her fans don't read the Metro and she survived the ghostwriter scandal.

FlyingSoloFlyingFree · 13/11/2017 19:20

I work in this market and would be very surprised if Zoella herself had much to do with the contents and certainly not the pricing. It will all have been sorted between her representatives, the manufacturer and Boots.

That said if I was putting my name to something I’d want tighter control over it. My DD is a fan and I considered getting her some bits last year but the quality was awful for the price, seems like this year’s offering is not much better.

Fluffypinkpyjamas · 13/11/2017 19:22

Ice thank you for that link, brilliant, he is funny! What a load of shite in that half advent calendar! Glad people have spoken out about it!

ElephantAndBird · 13/11/2017 19:36

I just watched about 10 minutes of zoella‘ snowy recent “vlog”. What complete and utter trash. I am baffled as to why anyone would be interested in someone so lacking in any identifiable personality features. What a time to be alive!! ShockConfusedHmmGrin

FlashTheSloth · 13/11/2017 19:41

Shitting hell what a bag of tat! I spend £40 on the No7 advent calendar and it's well worth it, has 25 days and 6 full size products which are probably worth more than the calendar price alone. £50 for 12 days of shite! No thanks.

I've heard of Zoella and knew she was a vlogger, that's it. I assumed she was mid teens, not bloody 27 years old! She should know better.

Domino20 · 13/11/2017 19:43

Icerebel 👌 brilliant link.

SilverySurfer · 13/11/2017 19:48

Dippingmytoesin
I think silvery is calling the parents fools for spending their money on this rather than the teens, I might be wrong but in that case I agree.

Yes, you're right, I was referring to the parents. I've never heard of Zoella or any of the others but they seem to be following in the footsteps of the ghastly Kardashians, where money and appearance are all that's important (even if some of them look like freaks). It's sad to think this is what some young people deem to be worthy of their time and money.

BumpowderSneezeonAndSnot · 13/11/2017 20:09

Wow! That's properly shit. I've bought the Amazon beauty one for me this year. Same price, twice the doors, named branded products

AdalindSchade · 13/11/2017 20:49

Bloody hell
£20 for a kids advent calendar of tat is ok as long as they consider it one of their gifts and it's full of things they will actually love - but £50 for that?! It's painful. It's vile actually, what a nasty individual.

Uokbing · 13/11/2017 20:59

I don't get it, are you supposed to start opening on the 1st December and then just.... stop after the 12th? Sad

That video is absolutely bloody brilliant.

Every parent of a Zoella fan should be forced to watch it.

Glittermakeseverythingbetter · 13/11/2017 22:09

I have been watching the fallout on youtube and Twitter. I went to Hello World and had a dreadful time, and have since been offered a refund. I do think it's bad our favourite youtubers haven't addressed any of the genuine problems we had, when they are supposed to care about their viewers.

I think since then, a lot of people have been jumping on the bandwagon, and laying into Zoella without knowing anything much about her. I am uncomfortable with the online bullying of her that is taking place by grown adults. Also don't like the fact that jaack has pasted a viewers comments on his Twitter page, in defense of her idol zoella, and grown adults are taking the p out of the girls spelling etc.

I have 2 zoella mad daughters. We've been watching and buying her products for years. My 13 year old didn't even bother asking for the advent calendar, as she can see it's a pile of tat that she dosent need, and even if she begged for it, I wouldn't have bought it, but I wouldn't go as far as personally insulting zoella online about it. I'm sure she will get the message if they aren't flying off the shelves.
I have to admit that I don't like her as much as I used to. Her last Superdrug range, before the Christmas one, had some hideous overpriced cactus ring holder, a notepad for £10 and overpriced cushions etc, so again, I refused to buy them.
I think Hello World has opened up a lot of parents eyes to what is going on behind closed doors in their tweenagers bedrooms, and done a lot of damage to the youtubers reputations.
If you watch Zoella's vlogs, they are quite disturbing. When she is promoting her products, it's like she is inviting you to her exclusive club, and she's doing you a massive favour by giving you a sneak peek of her products before they go on sale. I can imagine lonely hormonal teens getting sucked in, thinking Zoe is like a best friend.
Just this weekend, her boyfriend created massive Twitter hype, about his exclusive Christmas merch going on sale, and a hideous sugg life Christmas jumper.
My daughter wanted the hideous jumper, but it was £30 plus £5.45 postage!!!! So again, I said no. There's no way she'd be seen dead in an ugly jumper like that if it didn't have sugg life written on it.

TitaniasCloset · 13/11/2017 22:10

Who the fuck is Zoella?

MillicentFawcett · 13/11/2017 22:15

You feel sorry for a woman who has made millions by exploiting teenagers @Glittermakeseverythingbetter? Why?
