Now, I might be enjoying this fall out because my DS went to the HelloWorld event and was badly ripped off (a YouTuber event which went terribly wrong) but finally Zoella is being challenged on her over priced tat merchandise. Particularly her advent calendar which is £50 FIFTY FUCKING POUNDS for the likes of confetti, 2 tiny candles, a thin copy book and a Pom Pom!

www.boots.com/zoella-12-days-of-christmas-advent-calendar-10235552

Social media is going mad, there are thousands of tweets, a viral video lampooning it is doing the rounds and it was discussed on 5Live last night.

Is anyone watching this fall out?

Do we think this will finally be the end of these terrible, vacuous idiots? Or am I too optimistic?

Where in my post did I say I felt sorry for her???? I didn't say that.
Online bullying is not okay.

MillicentFawcett · 13/11/2017 22:28

I haven't seen anything that I'd call bullying. I've seen a lot of people having the scales fall from their eyes and realise that she's a manipulative scammer.

GherkinSnatch · 13/11/2017 22:34

I think a grown-ass woman making children feel like they need to be part of her club is far worse than any criticism she'll take for that. She's 27 - maybe parents need to be asking their children why a 27 year old woman would care what they think if they weren't giving them money.

LoniceraJaponica · 13/11/2017 22:37

I discussed this with DD earlier on today, and she said that HelloWorld was for the YouTubers who are too far up their ....., and who didn't want to meet their fans.

She has been to Summer in the City twice and met quite a few YouTubers. It did what it said on the tin basically, unlike HelloWorld.

GriefLeavesItsMark · 13/11/2017 22:44

I've just had a look at the sugg website. 6.99 for 10 stickers. Stickers you wouldn't pay 99pence for in Claire's accessories.
They deserve all the kickings they are getting.

ReanimatedSGB · 13/11/2017 23:09

If Zoella herself was 15 or so I would think it was a bit much for people to be directing personal venom at her but she's almost 30 and has made an awful lot of money from ripping kids off.
Aren't at least half these vacuous scammers young men, though? I can see the Zoella-bashing turning into the usual raging misogyny in short order, because it's always easier to attack women for being vain, stupid, and greedy...

GherkinSnatch · 13/11/2017 23:11

I think it’s largely aimed at Zoella because she’s the most prolific with the tat. None of the men have the sand level of merchandise other than the odd ghostwritten book.

BriechonCheese · 13/11/2017 23:13

I don't think this is bullying. I think it is criticism of firstly a product and secondly a culture surrounding 12 million + young people.

Reanimated I think her BF is one of the worst - I specifically mention him in some of my posts. However my original question wasn't in regards her product which goes out under her name, I don't think it is misogyny to attach criticism of her product to her.

Well the sugg life merchandise that has been mentioned quite a bit over the last two pages is a joint collaboration with her famous Youtuber brother, Joe Sugg. And I think her boyfriend is just as bad if not worse with the merchandise, plus I have an inkling he actually owns or part owns the company that distributes all the Sugg Life and other gleam Youtuber merchandise. (I cannot bring myself to say merch).

All that said, I do think she and her management have been very stupid with this calendar thing, and coming so soon after the HelloWorld stuff it really doesn't look good.

ReanimatedSGB · 14/11/2017 00:06

They've probably realised the bubble's about to burst (what with the economy close to tanking over Brexit, and many of their fans - or at least the fans' parents - already fucked off with them over that HelloMugs event) and thought they might do one last big blag. I bet many of the others have equally overpriced shit ranges out for this Christmas.

Didn't one of the boy ones get sued for ripping off a notebook idea from a woman who'd published something almost identical a few years previously?

Fluffypinkpyjamas · 14/11/2017 00:20

ODFO with the accusation of bullying and misogyny. Fucking pathetic. She is ripping people, children, off left right and centre. It’s not bullying or misogynistic to point that out and discuss it.

Bloomed · 14/11/2017 00:31

I think they're definitely doing a smash and grab before their market grows up.

PimmsatMidnight · 14/11/2017 00:35

I have only seen one Zoella video on YT and it had her guinea pig in it. Anyone who promotes guinea pigs is ok by me. Power to the Piggies, say I!

RedBullBlood · 14/11/2017 00:36

She's an adult woman selling tat to tweeners. She shouldn't be immune to criticism. That jaackmaate video is very funny and spot on.

PeiPeiPing · 14/11/2017 00:38

Oh hell no.

I can't believe people buy into this vacuous shit. Zoella (like many Z-lebs like her) has ZERO talent. It's disgusting that she sticks her name on a shitty little make up case that's worth a penny, and charges a tenner for it. And gullible little tweens and teens just lap it up. Same with this wanky Advent calendar.

velvetcandy · 14/11/2017 00:54

I've recently watched a few zoella videos and apart from the actual merchandise they themselves sell all she seems to do is shop shop shop, spend money, consume. It's pretty dangerous really and actually most youtubers I seem to.watch are similar with the consumption. As a 30 year old I feel sorry for kids these days or even more so.the parents who have to fork out the cash on shit so their kids feel they fit in.

JonSnowsWife · 14/11/2017 00:58

I want to know the psychology of why people feel compelled to actually buy this shit.

Peer Pressure.

She's a millionaire. She doesn't need to sell this tat stuff at a profit to keep afloat.

DD is a massive youtuber fan. She won't touch zoella channels with a bargepole.

At the end of the day. They're all geared up to make profit from you. I was told recently that the new iphone has a Samsung screen. If true, adults are basically literally paying through the nose for the name. Just like preteens are doing with Zoella stuff.

JonnaSilvie · 14/11/2017 06:07

Pimms, her guinea pigs are actually horribly neglected. You only need to spot the state of the cage in her vlogs to see that, and the lack of interaction she has with them. They rarely leave their cage since she go at her dog.

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 14/11/2017 06:27

One of the guinea pigs died so it’s just the one on its own now afaik

Her complete silence over everything speaks volumes. She doesn’t give a shit about her fans, she’ll just use her selective anxiety excuse again and cancel any fan events she has planned.

I cannot fathom how someone who does so little has earns so much money

DeloresJaneUmbridge · 14/11/2017 06:41

LOVE the JackMaate video....nailed it totally.

TrinityBelle · 14/11/2017 07:34

Just the name Zoella annoys me hugely. Such a stupid name. And dear God, that advent calendar is shit.

DeloresJaneUmbridge · 14/11/2017 07:48

She is claiming it’s nothing to do with her and all down to third party sellers.

Er.....it’s got your name all over it love....time to have a word with those manufacturers about exploiting the kids who are your fan base and who have put you in that mansion. A little gratitude for that would go a long way as would refunding at least £35 of that calendar cost to make it a more realistic price.

Animation86 · 14/11/2017 07:53

She even has a waxwork in Madame Tussaud’s, I genuinely couldn’t believe they had such a section

LoverOfCake · 14/11/2017 08:02

Well, as much as I agree that this market is a huge exploitation, I blame the culture we live in, and to a large extent the adults.

How many people on here watch the likes of big brother, im a celeb, celeb big brother, love island and the list goes on. All of which are programmes covering the inane lives of vacuous nobodies who then go on to make money out of having been a nobody on the telly?

Those shows are no different to this vacuous youtube dross, and yet the adults watch all of it and fall in love with the vacuous twats on there. If the likes of Katie price make money from launching her book and career, selling out the lives of her children, or the Kardashians who have made a career out of being ... erm, what are they again? Status symbols or something? Then why not the likes of any one of us talking shit on youtube and telling teenagers how marvellous we are and won't you buy this sweat shirt or these egg cups or this £50 advent calendar?

I have a fifteen year old who is into Dodi and Tom Scar and tells me that Dan and Phil tickets go on sale today to the tune of £50 Shock and I've told him that nice people as they may be, they're all talentless individuals who happened to b in the right place at the right time, and that being a youtuber is not a career, even if you're making money at it. And also, because youtube have now changed their way of doing things meaning that the youtubers make very little money from the adverts now and have needed to exploit a different market i.e. The viewing market....

But it all starts with our need to see how people live their lives, such as the likes of big brother which have been on television for decades now and spawned the celebrities such as Jade Goody etc who became celebrities purely because they were nobodies.

Perhaps if we started by getting rid of that shite the youtubers would follow.
