about birthday chocolates from DH?

It was my birthday yesterday.

We set a budget of about £30 for each other for birthdays.

For the last few years for birthdays and Xmas DH has bought me chocolates from a shop whose chocolate I don't actually like. I told him years ago I didn't like it but he still buys it me from there citing reasons like "I thought you'd like this filling", "It didn't look too dark" etc.

Yesterday I unwrapped a box of chocolates from this shop and he said he got them me because they were my favourite flavour. So, we ate them after tea and I told them I didn't really enjoy them because, as I've said lots of time before, I don't like this shop's chocolate.

He went mad. We had a big row. He said I was ungrateful. I

I really don't think I was U... was I?

I've told him repeatedly I really don't like the chocolate from this shop so I'm not going to feel bad when, once again, I don't like it and tell him so. The first time he got me them and I didn't enjoy them I told him nicely (i.e. I wasn't ungrateful) but now, actually, I am pretty ungrateful because every fucking year he wastes some of my birthday budget on a present he knows I won't fucking like.

Next time it's his birthday I might spend some of the budget on tampons just to teach him a lesson.

@LisaSimpsonsbff I think that's because it's an acquired taste for most people and they associate moving from sugary chocolate to higher content cacao chocolates are a part of growing up/being more mature/becoming more cultured in the same way that people may be appalled if you drink alcopops and try to make you drink expensive wine instead. If we're going to be honest though we all that that one dodgy thing that we still like from back in the day (I am addicted to bananas flavoured dairy for example). It's a bit hypocritical for people to be so self righteous about it.

Halfpast my dh used to always buy me flowers at Xmas and i hated it. Aside from the fact that he spent a lot of money that we didn't have to spare, they were always greens and reds and oranges with gold etc. I hate those colours, I love pinks and yellows, lovely summer bouquets. I also didn't like the fact that they sort of blended in with the decorations, such a waste. He finally copped on and stopped, I would love the odd bunch of tulips or whatever for my birthday but daren't say anything he case he resumes.

ittakes2 · 14/11/2017 20:37

Why did you eat them if you don't like them! I just would have left them.

goose1964 · 14/11/2017 20:47

Another guess for hotel chocolat, I love it but DH doesn't.. he must buy them because he likes them

dudsville · 14/11/2017 20:51

If you don't like something don't eat it. Your fella clearly needs straight forward signposting and eating it confuses him!

DancingHouse · 14/11/2017 20:52

Why would you eat them if you don't like them?

bridgetreilly · 14/11/2017 20:52

I am very happy to message my address to anyone who gets unwanted chocolates and doesn't know how to dispose of them.

Lilyhatesjaz · 15/11/2017 00:00

I've never tried hotel chocolat but I now feel inspired to do so. For research purposes only of course.

Lilyhatesjaz · 15/11/2017 00:04

Unliked dark chocolate is best used to make chocolate truffles the addition of cream and rum normally solves the problem

Motoko · 15/11/2017 00:30

MipMipMip I like the dark chocolate buttons from Chococo.

MipMipMip · 15/11/2017 12:05

Thanks Mokoto! We have really strict instructions on what relative can have post stroke and if she's given bigger than normal buttons she won't break them and will choke. Sad

DeadGood · 15/11/2017 12:13

But OP did he say why he kept buying them??

StormTreader · 15/11/2017 13:30

"Why would you eat them if you don't like them?"

I will eat literally any chocolate, but that doesnt mean I dont have a "least preferred" kind and would be very annoyed to keep being given that as what is supposed to be a present for me.

Motoko · 15/11/2017 23:17

MipMipMip, I hope they're suitable for your relative.

MipMipMip · 16/11/2017 14:29

Thanks Motoko. They look very hopeful.

I also loathe Hotel Chocolat. I'm afraid I find it a bit Emperor's New Clothes and style over substance. It's expensive, therefore it must be fabulous. No....

My husband buys me nothing for Xmas or birthdays. I rarely get a card and when I have it's because I've nagged or had to ask for one - which defeats the point.

I'd love my husband to buy me anything, so remember it's nice to be given something and nice to have something you can share.

If your DH seems to go out of his way to buy chocolate from this shop then it's not a no effort present. Perhaps he just forgets you don't like them, or can't quite remember what you said about the chocolates last year. People are odd so try not to over think it. But do buy some chocolates you do like for yourself.
