about birthday chocolates from DH?

BendMeOver · 13/11/2017 12:26

It was my birthday yesterday.

We set a budget of about £30 for each other for birthdays.

For the last few years for birthdays and Xmas DH has bought me chocolates from a shop whose chocolate I don't actually like. I told him years ago I didn't like it but he still buys it me from there citing reasons like "I thought you'd like this filling", "It didn't look too dark" etc.

Yesterday I unwrapped a box of chocolates from this shop and he said he got them me because they were my favourite flavour. So, we ate them after tea and I told them I didn't really enjoy them because, as I've said lots of time before, I don't like this shop's chocolate.

He went mad. We had a big row. He said I was ungrateful. I

I really don't think I was U... was I?

I've told him repeatedly I really don't like the chocolate from this shop so I'm not going to feel bad when, once again, I don't like it and tell him so. The first time he got me them and I didn't enjoy them I told him nicely (i.e. I wasn't ungrateful) but now, actually, I am pretty ungrateful because every fucking year he wastes some of my birthday budget on a present he knows I won't fucking like.

Next time it's his birthday I might spend some of the budget on tampons just to teach him a lesson.

He's not listening. You pointed out that he wasn't listening, and he went mad. Normally he's not like this, it's just this one issue.

Something else is in play here. It's not really about the presents, it's some other issue. Maybe he's entitled and feels like any effort he makes, however inappropriate, deserves reward. Maybe it's something else from his past that makes this brand of chocolates meaningful in some way for him.

FWIW, Hotel Chocolat are bogging. The best chocolates in the world are the Fornum and Mason's mixed selection in the turquoise boxes. Quickly followed by Prestat. Grin

BendMeOver · 13/11/2017 13:39

They're Hotel Chocolat, yes. I find them too dark even the milk ones. I LOVE Thorntons though Grin

Kurri He fucking loves Hershey's so that wouldn't work at all. Now I've written that down I'm actually thinking a packet of tampons for his birthday just isn't enough. I clearly need to LTB.

DeadDeadDeadRose · 13/11/2017 13:43

I don't like Hotel Chocolat either. Lots of the flavours are really poncy. I like Lindt balls. I used to love Thorntons but they've really got worse and worse.

OlennasWimple · 13/11/2017 13:43

I'm sure Thorntons used to be nice. Or maybe it's just that Back in the Day Thornton's was a treat compared to the other duff offerings we had to choose from

BendMeOver · 13/11/2017 13:43

Sorry for everyone I've disappointed with my dislike of Hotel Chocolat.

I love Thorntons but they're not as good as they used to be.

TBH, a Crunchy dunked in a cup of earl grey is my most favourite chocolate recipe. I'm a heathen. Sorry.

PuppyMonkey · 13/11/2017 13:44

Well, now you ARE being unreasonable OP - Thorntons are mostly rank Grin

I like Aldi chocolate the bestest Grin

PowerOfAttorneyQuestions · 13/11/2017 13:44

Yanbu.

I do think your mistake though was to eat the fuckers. You should have just left them there and when he asks why your not opening them, to have said "well I don't like them. I was going to give them to my mum/friend"

Ceto · 13/11/2017 13:47

I'd suggest that next year you spend the three months running up to your birthday reminding him at least once a week that those chocolates Must Not Appear. Around a fortnight beforehand, ask him to confirm that he definitely has not bought them and promises not to buy them. And again a week beforehand.

If he still produces the chocolates after all that, either he's taking the piss or deserves to have them thrown at his head.

TheWorldIsMyCakePop · 13/11/2017 13:50

I don't think it matters where the chocolates you like are from. He should be getting those! For the record, I love Hotel chocolate, but not the filled ones, just the slabs Grin

Ttbb · 13/11/2017 13:51

OP-do you think that he may be trying to convert you?

Northernparent68 · 13/11/2017 13:51

Is it worth a row ? If the relationship is sound one, can’t you overlook this ?

NinonDeLenclos · 13/11/2017 13:51

He obviously likes them, Thorntons is minging so I guess he's buying the chocolate he fancies.

BendMeOver · 13/11/2017 13:56

I think he might be trying to convert me! If he finds that one chocolate in there that I fall in love with then he can work on getting me to love the rest Grin

Northern Most definitely not worth the row. I was surprised we rowed. I think we rowed because I called him out on buying me stuff I've said before I don't like and he knew I was right!

OP posts:
IncyWincyGrownUp · 13/11/2017 13:58

Northern why should she overlook continual contempt for her opinion? Her husband is saying through his actions, every year, that she is wrong and she needs to learn. That’s pretty fucking shitty.

He needs to apologise, and to bloody listen to what his wife has told him on more than one occasion.

StormTreader · 13/11/2017 13:59

"Is it worth a row ? If the relationship is sound one, can’t you overlook this ?"

You've got to be joking, surely? She should put up with something year after year that she doesnt like and keeps asking not to have simply because he cant be arsed to do any different?

Justbookedasummmerholiday · 13/11/2017 14:02

Keep the box. Cover sprouts in laxative chocolate and wrap for his birthday. Remember NOT to share. ..

Cromwell1536 · 13/11/2017 14:05

This would be perplexing and annoying to me also.

HC chocolates promise serious deep, dark chocolate hit, but are mostly sugary crap. Booja chocolates are nice. I've yet to try Prestat but Christmas is coming so maybe..

llangennith · 13/11/2017 14:06

I’ve always hated dark chocolates and anything with nuts in. Hasn’t stopped DC or any partner from buying me the bloody things Angry

CakeUpWall · 13/11/2017 14:08

I remember Thorntons used to be lovely, but that was about 30 yrs ago. Now they are inedible. Really greasy.

NinonDeLenclos · 13/11/2017 14:12

Def Thortons for his birthday and eat them all yourself. He probably won't do it again.

Rebeccaslicker · 13/11/2017 14:13

Omg some hotel chocolat stuff is lush!

Salted caramel chocolate buttons
Lemon or caramel cheesecake
Raspberry swirl mini slab
Chocolate covered caramelised almonds
Lemon and lime white chocolate bites

What's not to love!!?

KurriKurri · 13/11/2017 14:19

He loves Hershey's ? - he's deranged, leave him Grin

ToadTheVampireThreadKiller · 13/11/2017 14:20

Put them in the food bank.
Keep them and give them to him for Christmas or his birthday, buy yourself some chocolates you like with the money you would have spent on him.

RubbishMantra · 13/11/2017 14:22

I adore hotel chocolat and will be oddly sad if it is them

Me too! The salted caramel milk chocolate is delicious. And those chocolat(e) frappes they do. Now I feel sad.
