To say I bloody love running!

Just for back from a run in the countryside. High as a kite Grin and sweaty as a thrash metal drummer.

Crisp, autumn day, mist on the hills, saw a heron, stoat, loads of pheasants. Cyclists, other runners, dog walkers, golfers, just people out enjoying the outdoors.

I only took up running a few years ago and never expected to be this smitten.

It makes me eat well, sleep well, drink less, and I’m a lot more chilled. My chronic lung condition has all but vanished (touch wood). I’ve met loads of lovely people of all ages and walks of life. And all for the price of trainers and some Lycra from Aldi.

If anyone is even thinking about trying running, try it and maybe you’ll end up as head-over-heels as me.

Rant over. Off to have long, hot bath.

Delilah

Such a shame for you to have injuries and so frustrating.

I accept that I may well have to pack it in at some point (I’m near to 50) and have promised dh that i will cycle with him if that happens. Or do yoga or whatever. Bowls?!

But whatever happens je ne regretterai rien, que sera and all that.

I get all the same feelings from walking my dog Love seeing the seasons and I'm out 7 days a week for an hour of brisk walking up and down hills, rain or shine. I love walking as i don't need to change clothes, I don't get very sweaty, and don't need to wash my hair after.plus very low risk of injury. Each to their own.

Funclesmuck · 11/11/2017 20:54

Ahh, I bloody love this thread. I’m defo in the category of “I run, but I’m crap, but do it slowly and often” so I’m my mind it still counts. ATM I’m doing 5k three times a week and try to do a 10k every month. I run through Forrests which is amazing, as like others have said is full of wildlife. However, a few weeks ago the temp plummeted, so I had a hat on, and was well into my run, and got attacked from above and collapsed onto the floor in terror. Was it a buzzard I hear you ask? Or maybe a mugger? No, it was a leaf! An actual leaf hit my head and I hit the deck like a fool!!

MsHarry · 11/11/2017 20:55

P.S I used to run but I had to force myself, have never felt that with walking. it is my saviour. So much thinking time .

Growingboys · 11/11/2017 20:57

@IveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying and alwaysanortherner

YES to the justifying the food intake!

YES to the perverse thrill of running in awful weather.

NO the annoying green-eyed people who say won't your knees go.

NO to injuries which mean I haven't had a year-long stretch without injury since, I dunno, my 20s?

Justbookedasummmerholiday · 11/11/2017 21:00

Op I have separated stomach muscles, would running be helpful? I have ddogs who would accompany me out at night!! I go to the gym but feel like getting back to running, ddogs would also benefit!

QuiteLikely5 · 11/11/2017 21:01

Did it help you guys lose weight ?

Also since it’s so cold and wet do you wear jackets? Sounds like she ch a ridiculous question!

QuiteLikely5 · 11/11/2017 21:01

MsHarry

Yes each to their own. I do love walking my dog too, although I do run on the downhills!

One of the reasons I didn’t start running until I was well into my 40s was because I loved walking the dog and that was my exercise. I thought runners were insane, obsessive and weird.

I only started because my dds PE teacher persuaded me to try. I’d never been near a gym or any exercise class and thought of myself as unsporty and unhealthy because of various chronic diseases I have (won’t list them as probably too outing and two are vanishingly rare).

Now I think of myself as strong despite various problems. All my conditions have improved with my improved fitness.

Jealous - I discovered running pre DC. Used to do around 32 miles a week.

Unfortunately I don’t have time to look after DHorse and DD and escape for runs. Plus we now live in a very hilly rural village so I’d struggle to know where to run unless I went off-road.

IveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying · 11/11/2017 21:05

Justbook

I think for diastasis rectii the thing is to work on core then run with good form, engaging core and staying tall.

I would see a sports physio for proper advice though.

I’m feeling really sad reading all these messages , as was a keen if slow runner. But tore my Achilles’ tendon badly in the summer and out of action for some time being . Am just getting back to walking but desperately hope to be running again.

I used to use running as my time to clear my mind and talk through my problems that I might have.

MsHarry · 11/11/2017 21:09

NO the annoying green-eyed people who say won't your knees go.

Unfortunately this is a reality and has put a stop to DH's running. He's now one of the lycra cyclers!

Running is good for weight control but for me my weight stayed the same but I gained muscle. I’m not trying to lose though as near the bottom of normal weight for height anyway. Loads of people I know have lost weight and kept it off through running.

Today I wore two layers but no jacket as I’d get hot. I would take a jacket and overtrousers in a pack for fell running.

QuiteLikely5 · 11/11/2017 21:14

Did it tone you up? I’ve got so many wobbly bits Blush

IveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying · 11/11/2017 21:14

I’m no expert by the way, just bloody love it.

And really sorry again for winding up the injured runners who wish they could run.

OP posts:
IveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying · 11/11/2017 21:18

I definitely toned up. I used to get tired arms holding a hair dryer Grin
Legs are toned but a bit scrawny tbh.

Greenteandchives · 11/11/2017 21:21

I used to love running, but it wrecked my tenuous pelvic floor and after a couple of repairs I can no longer do it. 🙁

DonttouchthatLarry · 11/11/2017 21:41

I used to be one of those people who shared memes about only running if they were chased by a clown with a bloody knife etc. but then started running in my 40's and now love it! Did a 5 mile trail run at a NT property this morning but am currently icing my hamstring on the sofa Sad

I love trail and fell running (you can cover so much more ground )but I'm quite wary of steep descents as the opportunity for breaking parts of yourself is really quite high! DH however is half mountain goat and flies down scree slopes quite happily.

After several years of intermittent running in between 3 foot operations I'm now starting to improve and really enjoy it - as well as improving fitness it's helped reduce my stress levels and digestive problems too, and all for free!

TinklyLittleLaugh · 11/11/2017 21:45

Ah I can't run any more. DH and DS(11) were up early and ran 7 miles up the local fell and back. They came back muddy and rosey cheeked and buzzing. I enjoy it vicariously through them.

Eolian · 11/11/2017 21:51

Wish I could run. I took it up about 8 years ago, after having dc 2. It took me a looong time to learn to love it, but I did. Now I can't run because of plantar fasciitis and creaky knees and I really miss it. Sad

TonicandLime · 11/11/2017 22:11

What is it with dmums and running? My dm thought my hips and knees would fall to bits when I started.

Despite running for years through pregnancies etc, many, many races my DM would always ask when I was going to stop!

I accept that I may well have to pack it in at some point (I’m near to 50)

So am I and am doing another marathon next year - I have been overtaken by many runners older than me.

TonicandLime · 11/11/2017 22:15

NO the annoying green-eyed people who say won't your knees go.

Unfortunately this is a reality and has put a stop to DH's running. He's now one of the lycra cyclers!

Not necessarily - I know plenty of long time runners older than me with no knee trouble plus running strengthens bones. It can happen but I also know plenty of people with knee trouble who have never run

WhitePhantom · 11/11/2017 22:21

Your post came at just the right time for me - I'm meeting a few running buddies for a 12k run at 7.30am tomorrow and was feeling a bit unenthusiastic about it - but now I'm looking forward to it! Grin

CertainHalfDesertedStreets · 11/11/2017 22:32

I get that high, OP - it’s great, isn’t it? I’m not a really serious or good runner - I only really started a year or so ago and usually only run between 5-7k very slowly a couple of times a week but I love getting out in the fresh air and soaking up the countryside. I went to Park Run and really didn’t like it - really crowded and people shouting encouraging things such as, ‘Keep going, ladies! You’re doing really well.’ So patronising. I know they meant well but put me right off.

Are you me?

Although I have to have a word with myself when I feel like I've ONLY done 7k Grin
