To say I bloody love running!

Just for back from a run in the countryside. High as a kite Grin and sweaty as a thrash metal drummer.

Crisp, autumn day, mist on the hills, saw a heron, stoat, loads of pheasants. Cyclists, other runners, dog walkers, golfers, just people out enjoying the outdoors.

I only took up running a few years ago and never expected to be this smitten.

It makes me eat well, sleep well, drink less, and I’m a lot more chilled. My chronic lung condition has all but vanished (touch wood). I’ve met loads of lovely people of all ages and walks of life. And all for the price of trainers and some Lycra from Aldi.

If anyone is even thinking about trying running, try it and maybe you’ll end up as head-over-heels as me.

Rant over. Off to have long, hot bath.

Parkrun is full of people that bloody love running 😊 My dh got his first sub 25 at this morning.

This is someone who until recently had 2 prolapsed discs and could barely walk let alone run.

Redinthefacegirl · 11/11/2017 12:36

I discovered running this year as a cheap way to reclaim my body since DS2 was born. A friend encouraged me to sign up for a 10mile run and since I hate being a drop out it forced me to up my fitness enough to enjoy it. I'm 3 weeks back at work post maternity leave and the 10miles is done and dusted so I'm struggling with time for longer runs, you've just inspired me to make time!

Bambamber · 11/11/2017 12:38

I used to love running, but can't run anymore for medical reasons. I do go for nice gentle walks instead, but it's just not quite the same

IveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying · 11/11/2017 12:39

I love off road running (trail or fell) best but I won’t do it on my own as I worry I’d break my ankle (have done it before just walking) and have no phone signal for help.

The feeling you get hurtling down a hill with a bunch of other crazy folk reminds me of downhill skiing. Also hill running is much quicker than hill walking if you’re limited by small children at home.

I started c25k to help with a lung condition
Ive been going out twice a week for a year!
I am so slow. I can still walk faster than I jog
It does clear my lungs though
Are there any other plodders and how can I increase speed
I feel too slow for park run

IveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying · 11/11/2017 12:43

Redintheface -a grand running name Grin

Well done for doing a 10 miler post baby. Making time is hard. Although I bloody love running I often don’t feel like it until I’m actually doing it. I often think that putting the Lycra on is the hard bit: once it’s on you’d feel silly taking it if without actually running.

I might get a t shirt made

I bloody LOVE runningGrin

Cis...i am a slow plodder too..now just accept it
i started 5 yrs ago and absolutley love running, and slowly over time have built stamnia, come back to it after very bad accident took me out for 18 months.
I have people wittering on about PBs and km split times and balhdy blah...nah i just run..plod along happy as anything
i can run 10 miles, takes me as along as it takes me...its my time, my hobby i will enjoy it and not worry about whether i am a hare or a tortoise...
embrace your inner tortoise

and my best running mantra...'some is better than none'

ShowOfHands · 11/11/2017 12:44

I run 6 times a week. Week days I do 6-10k and at a weekend I do a much longer run.

I don't like running Grin

I like being fit, like smashing records, love seeing deer and rabbits and sunrises and sunsets and mist and fields. Running? Nah. I hate it.

I like weights and intervals more.

IveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying · 11/11/2017 12:45

Cis

You are never too slow to parkrun-try it once and you’ll see. There are fast folk but they won’t bother you. Blink and you’ll miss them and then you can plod in peace with fellow zen runners.

Showof

That’s a lot of running for a non-lover Grin

Ooh also if anyone's looking for recommendations for good running trainers, Nike Airmax ones are amazing!!! I bought a pair a couple of years ago, and they've been brilliant.

Maddiemademe · 11/11/2017 13:35

I adore running but I absolutely hate the negative attention it can bring. In fact I can't remember the last time I ran outside and didn't have some comment shouted out at me.

I love the way it makes me feel, how it helps both mentally and physically so have got myself a treadmill in my garage but it's just not the same is it. Anyone have any good wireless headphone suggestions for blocking out idiotic comments?

RunningOutOfCharge · 11/11/2017 13:38

I’ve never had comments. Ever. Can’t be nice though!

I organise so much when I’m running! In my head o meal plan/do work rotas/plan Christmas.... all of it!

That’s really crap that you have been harassed whilst running. I haven’t had a problem but maybe I’ve got running bitch face. I don’t run with headphones as I want to hear traffic as I run on country roads mainly.

OP posts:
ShowOfHands · 11/11/2017 13:40

I've never had a single comment directed at me that was anything other than a compliment or greeting or cheery remark about the weather. Another of the things I like about running that isn't the actual running.

I do clock up a lot of miles and the benefits to my mental and physical wellbeing vastly outweigh my lack of enjoyment of the act itself.

IveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying · 11/11/2017 13:42

Running

I love to think whilst running, or I ‘play’ music in my head-fast songs which help my pace. If I run with dd we sing out loud if no one’s around or if we have enough breath.

OP posts:
ShowOfHands · 11/11/2017 13:43

I don't wear headphones at all. I have my running app turned up and my phone in an arm strap doodah but need to hear traffic. I run rurally on fields and tracks with blind bends. The odd wazzock in a range rover will fly round the corner unexpectedly so I need warning.

My shoes of choice are Merrell trail running shoes.

Deathraystare · 11/11/2017 13:49

I wish I did but I am so clumsy I end up stumbling. I am going for brisk walks every morning though. Along the river. Has made me feel a lot better already!

Deathraystare · 11/11/2017 13:50

I watch all the cyclists and joggers with a little bit of envy!

IveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying · 11/11/2017 13:55

I doubt your body will know the difference between a slow jog and a brisk walk, the benefits will be similar.

VioletCharlotte · 11/11/2017 13:58

I'd love to say I love running, but I really don't. I've tried so hard to get into it, but it just does nothing to me.

Swimming gives me a real mood boost though.

HulaMelody · 11/11/2017 13:59

I love running on crisp autumn days. Got a pang for it earlier today but running a 5k race tonight

IveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying · 11/11/2017 14:02

I don’t swim as I have no eardrums and get ear infections if i try even with ear plugs.

Good luck Hula for tonight!

For those who are lonely runners, search for a local run together group
They meet 2 plus times a week and have volunteer leaders and planned routes
I love it but hate running 😉

I personally don’t like park run. It started locally to me as a Run for anyone. It still is BUT it’s also swarming with folks smashing pb’s and ‘winning’
The town running club usually turn up all matching outfitted and competitive and it’s ruined it for me. My best time was 32 mins which is pretty respectable and yet I was lapped in lap one by someone who ‘won’ it in 19
Tried a few times after injury and becoming the 40 minuter and yeah, nearly everyone had gone
Depends on what you want from it. I’ve never made friends with anyone at one yet I’ve made friends at running group

McPie · 11/11/2017 14:31

I love the peace I get when out running I have 11yo twins and a 16yo so the 30 miles a week I run all alone is bliss. I ran 9 miles yesterday and the most I said was "morning" to a few people and a "fuck me" out loud when I got to the top of the hill and was hit with the full force of the freezing wind. Everyone thinks I'm mad but I don't care as the fresh air and exercise has done my mental health wonders and the fact I enjoy it is a bonus!
