To say I bloody love running!

Just for back from a run in the countryside. High as a kite Grin and sweaty as a thrash metal drummer.

Crisp, autumn day, mist on the hills, saw a heron, stoat, loads of pheasants. Cyclists, other runners, dog walkers, golfers, just people out enjoying the outdoors.

I only took up running a few years ago and never expected to be this smitten.

It makes me eat well, sleep well, drink less, and I’m a lot more chilled. My chronic lung condition has all but vanished (touch wood). I’ve met loads of lovely people of all ages and walks of life. And all for the price of trainers and some Lycra from Aldi.

If anyone is even thinking about trying running, try it and maybe you’ll end up as head-over-heels as me.

Rant over. Off to have long, hot bath.

OP you inspired me! I put my running shoes on after not really running all summer. I'd like to say it was brilliant but I needed a poo half way and had to walk back Blush but my trainers are out of the cupboard so going to get back on track.

I would really not like park run. I'm as slow as a three legged tortoise and I don't like being around people. My favourite runs are in the woods as I love the solitude.

ThursdayLastWeek · 11/11/2017 15:42

Me too OP, which is Good Thing as I have a marathon place and so will be doing a LOT of running in the coming months Grin?

I love parkrun - ran a new one this morning that was loads faster than my usual hurrah! I tend to run alone, but enjoy having people to say hello to and chat to before and after. It makes turning up to races less lonely too.

Generally I prefer to run alone. Part of its appeal to me is (in theory) being able to up and go. Long slow run, hill sprints, alone, in company, trail, road -there’s way more variety than I ever imagined before I started!

oldlaundbooth · 11/11/2017 15:57

I've been saying for about five years I need to get et into running.

It's good cos you can just set off from home, no driving necessary.

I really fancy it.

And I've heard you can eat what you like due to the hard calorie burn!

oldlaundbooth · 11/11/2017 15:57

On a separate tangent I don't think I've ever actually seen a stoat 🤔

aracena · 11/11/2017 16:14

I get that high, OP - it’s great, isn’t it? I’m not a really serious or good runner - I only really started a year or so ago and usually only run between 5-7k very slowly a couple of times a week but I love getting out in the fresh air and soaking up the countryside. I went to Park Run and really didn’t like it - really crowded and people shouting encouraging things such as, ‘Keep going, ladies! You’re doing really well.’ So patronising. I know they meant well but put me right off.

I love the solitude - with a busy job and two kids and not a minute to myself normally, it’s such a relief to get out and enjoy some peace and quiet. I get to plan stuff, work through ideas for work and home and then just get some headspace to day dream which doesn’t happen otherwise! I would be just as happy going for country walks by myself but without a dog people look at you a bit askance and running seems socially acceptable! Also, although I hum and ha for ages before I go out, once I get going it’s great and I feel so energised when I get back it’s brilliant...

IveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying · 11/11/2017 16:31

LEM At least you got those trainers out.

Here’s a stoat, they run across roads like a long skinny squirrel, faster than you can say ‘there’s a stoat....

To say I bloody love running!

I love it too!

Started a year ago, now have a 5k personal best of 23.10!

Yes, the lack of equipment required is very liberating, and I still find it odd that you can get so far from home with no wheels involved. I feel like I know the countryside around me much better because of it.

I haven’t done it but I fancy running just in one direction and not back again and get dh to pick me up so that I can run twice as far (iyswim).

I have been running today, and have done two half marathons in the last couple of years - but have yet to feel the love - I much prefer arriving back home..

Growingboys · 11/11/2017 16:45

I ran 8 miles at crack of dawn today and it was bloody lovely, even in the rain and mist.

I run to stay sane and happy, and to allow me to stuff my face as much as I want. I run for solitude as I have 3DC and a pressurised full-time job and seem like I talk ALL DAY. So my dream run is early morning, no-one else about.

I also do yoga to help with the running injuries. Love both but running's better.

Fun post to read!

pumpkin321 · 11/11/2017 16:53

I run 5k once or twice a week in a lovely local country park. With two young dcs and pt job, it's a great chance for some solitude. I can't say I love it the entire run, but parts of it I get a real buzz from.......running really seems to release endorphins. I especially enjoy it now I've got Spotify on my phone and can make my own playlists. Great post Smile

BackBoiler · 11/11/2017 16:55

I so need to start running once I have recovered from my forthcoming hysterectomy. I have been anaemic for ages and proper exercise seems to bring me all faint!

blueskydreams · 11/11/2017 17:01

It's very addictive, too easy to overdose and end up injured!

LEMtheoriginal · 11/11/2017 17:24

blanch my pb for 5k is about 45 minutes Grin faster than sitting on the sofa though

Getting to eat loads and having a good appetite so that things taste great is another lovely side effect. According to my Fitbit I do 2500 cals average and as my weight is steady I can only assume that’s what I’m scarfing.

I don't really love it when I'm doing it.... In fact, I'm often thinking a combination of swear words in my head as I go along - but I LOVE feeling fitter, being able to dash upstairs for something at home, jog to catch a train etc, and I think it gives me more energy in general. And being outdoors in these short days is great. Weirdly I quite like running in the rain and get a perverse sense of achievement from having done it, like I've beaten the weather Wink

AlwaysaNortherner · 11/11/2017 17:43

And yes, getting to eat lots!

Highpeak · 11/11/2017 19:54

Looking forward to getting back in to it post ankle injury followed by baby. It's been a while but I used to run a lot and I loved the convenience and flexibility of it. I live in the Peak district now do runs will be much nicer than when I was in the city.

SkafaceClaw · 11/11/2017 20:15

Fantastic to read, making me extra excited about getting back to it!-It made me a little jealous like a pp. I am currently 7 months pregnant and have had to stop.

By no means am I a natural runner (as my dm likes to remind me) but there is no high like it especially when I turn the corner and get to the beach!

HostaFireAndIce · 11/11/2017 20:24

Oh Lord, this thread looks like my Facebook feed! (Just thought I'd show up and break up a little bit of the love Wink)

lesleyhal · 11/11/2017 20:29

Oh hell yes I LOVE running too. It really is my saviour from a stressful life. The longer the better I say Wink

WheresTheEvidence · 11/11/2017 20:31

I never got "it"

People who ran always seemed to go on about this great thing and I was always Hmm

However I started c25k in May and by June was regularly doing 5k and loved it! I am very lucky with the countryside around here so many amazing routes to follow.

In the last week I've been chatting to friends about doing a 10k race (Previous me would have said no way what the he'll etc) but I went out for a run on Thursday and ended up covering 12k (it waasnt intentional) and did the same yesterday! If you'd said even on Monday that I'd go for a 6.5 mile run I would have laughed in your face.

But I get it now, the reason people choose to run; the calm, the opportunity to think, and the pushing yourself further (1 more lamppost etc) and the achievement of seeing what your body CAN do!

IveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying · 11/11/2017 20:31

Skaface

What is it with dmums and running? My dm thought my hips and knees would fall to bits when I started. She’s gradually coming round now she can see how well I am, having been really quite unwell before I took it up.

lesleyhal · 11/11/2017 20:37

WheresTheEvidence It's great to see what your body is capable of. It's capable of so much more than we give it credit for. Smile

Delilah21D00LoT · 11/11/2017 20:38

*@IveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying *

Yes you are being unreasonable Wink - because, I have been a runner for over 20 years, but have not been able to run for the past 2 years due to a couple of injuries that are not healing. I'm gutted Sad

I miss that 'Runners High' - there is nothing like it Smile

Enjoy, keep going and look after your limbs! Smile
