To argue that food products have an 'age limit'

During the recent summer, my DC (14 & 19) both went through a substantial amount of ice creams and similar treats. Whilst DH and I are pretty strict on the amount of treats DD (14) has, DS is obviously more independent. This summer, every day he'd have at least one or two 'Calippos'. Now I have no issue with this, I just thought it was pretty funny as it's not at all conducive with the "gangster" image he tries to cultivate. I won't tell him that though! It just got me thinking at the time, I would absolutely die if my husband started sucking on a Calippo in our garden or if we had friends over! I just couldn't imagine it, a grown man (or woman) having certain treats like that.

Don't ask me at what age does it become embarrassing, but AIBU to think there is one?

I'm fairly sure the OP is being light-hearted for the PO amongst us... Hmm

Where's the fun in growing old - in acting like a serious grown up all the time? My teens constantly say I'm an overgrown teenager and long may it continue. I want to be one of those 80 year olds who gets rid of the speed limiter on my mobility scooter and blows bubbles with bubblegum in the street. Loosen up a little!

DrKrogersfavouritepatient · 09/11/2017 12:06

YANB entirely U as is illustrated by so many examples being given of grown ups enjoying "children's" foods.
If there was no perceived age limit for the consumption of jelly and ice cream or Pom bears then there'd be no mileage in using those things as an example of there not being an age limit iyswim
But imo a grown up should be able to tuck into fish fingers and spaghetti hoops without being criticised 😁

Guiltybystander · 09/11/2017 12:06

Lollipops should have an age limit of 12. Same for haribos and other cheap boiled sweets.
As you grow you should get more classy and your taste more refined. . Tiramisu, créme brulée, crépes, cream cakes, chocolate bars etc..

NameChangeFamousFolk · 09/11/2017 12:07

I don't allow Marmite or cauliflower cheese between the ages of 9 and 22. Otherwise, we're pretty relaxed with age/food.

RunningOutOfCharge · 09/11/2017 12:07

A calliope isn’t even ‘food’

CoughLaughFart · 09/11/2017 12:07

If you would ‘absolutely die’ if your husband ate a Callippo, you either have a ridiculously charmed life or are just plain ridiculous. I know what my money’s on.

BatShite · 09/11/2017 12:09

No, I don;t see why there should be an age limit on food and would never ever think anything of an adult eating a calippo. Only way I would notice an adult was eating a callippo would be if they were making a huge fuss over eating it or pretending to be giving a blowjob, in which case I would just think they were being childish, and still think nothing of the callippo Grin

My mum takes the piss out of me if I eat iced gems.

CoughLaughFart · 09/11/2017 12:10

When I was 19 I used a fake ID to buy cauliflower cheese in M&S. My parents still believe to this day that I was getting a bag of Percy Pigs.

Coconutspongexo · 09/11/2017 12:10

Really?! Hmm

Clandestino · 09/11/2017 12:11

I was munching on a rocky road sundae from Tesco at work recently. Complete with little pink marshmallows and icing on top. You're never too old for things you like. Like condensed milk from a tube etc.

Honeycombcrunch · 09/11/2017 12:11

Would anyone care to join me for lunch? I'm planning to spell out some rude words with my tinned alphabet pasta Smile

EdmundCleverClogs · 09/11/2017 12:12

I've eaten Turkey Dinosaurs recently, I managed not to regress into a pre-teen! They were so good, with beans and HP sauce.

I shared one of those Dairy Milk thin bars with the child yesterday. They don't taste as good as they used to Sad. I miss Taz bars, Freddo Caramel aren't the same!

splendide · 09/11/2017 12:12

I suppose puréed stuff and formula has an age limit. And breast milk. Although there is a trade in adults buying breast milk so maybe not.

Coconutspongexo · 09/11/2017 12:14

When I was ‘dangerously’ anorexic I would eat ‘baby food’

I recall Beyoncé doing a baby food diet too which started others copying her.

IHaveBrilloHair · 09/11/2017 12:14

I buy munch bunch yogurts sometimes, I like them

LemonysSnicket · 09/11/2017 12:14

My DP will only have a caterpillar cake for his birthday and ate a Nobbly Bobbly last week. He enjoys them ..so do I. Love a callipo and my mum still buys in mini milks for when I visit in summer.
It's food and it's nostalgic, who cares.

CoffeebyIV · 09/11/2017 12:15

My birthday party this weekend included cheese & pineapple on sticks, party rings and iced gems. We loved it!

splendide · 09/11/2017 12:16

Dh loves iced gems and most days I can be found stuffing my face with the kids haribos. If you enjoy it, why wouldn't you eat it?

Food is food. There's nothing odd about liking Calippos. YABU.

metalmum15 · 09/11/2017 12:20

My dp ate a nobbly bobbly last week

Snigger 😀

LagunaBubbles · 09/11/2017 12:20

it chides me to no end to see an adult on one of those oversized scooters or, heaven forbid, skateboarding

You sound a bit of a snob actually OP, the bit about "dying" if anyone saw you or your DH eat a Calippo is a bit strange to. Are you so consumed about other people would think of you and him?
