what's the worst state you have ever received something you bought second hand?

I bought a beautiful jumperoo second hand from someone a few weeks ago for when the time is right for my DD. they cost a fortune bought new, and I've learnt my lesson on spending money buying things new for my daughter to hate them!

arranged collection, my dad was kind enough to pick it up for me, brought it back and there it is sitting in all its glory looking like money very well spent.

expect, it stunk of piss 😂

the fabric that covers the seat was absolutely honking of toddler pee! it didn't really make any difference, I removed the seat and stuck it in the washing machine on a very hot wash and cleaned up all the other plastic bits and it's good as new!

but why would you sell a second hand item (described as in perfect condition) that smells of wee?! I wouldn't sell anything to anyone without making sure it was clean!

Jumperoo here too, except I didn't buy it. It was on a FB selling site, described as perfect codition. Got there, it was absolutely encrusted with God knows what, and stunk. I told the lady selling that she had a cheek and stormed off!

I bought a dress off Ebay which had massive yellow armpit stains! I complained and got a refund. Seriously, who would try and sell something like that?! I wouldn't even charity shop it (unless the charity shop took clothes for rags)

A jumper from eBay that stank so badly of cigarette smoke that, when I washed it, made the rest of the laundry smell of smoke too. I binned the jumper and had to wash the rest of the clothes twice more.

I think smells are probably the most likely problem - people really do stop noticing them if they've become normal for them I once bought a sort of corset-y top on eBay that was described as 'nearly new, hardly worn' but turned up STINKING of stale cigarette smoke, and when I hand-washed it the sinkful of clean water instantly went a thick murky brown, it was vile.

I was going to say jumperoo too before I even read your op. Encrusted with filth and all the symbols on the on/off switch rubbed off and the pictures on the little cylinder that rolls half rubbed off. Obviously very very well used and I just don't know how you'd have the cheek to sell something in that condition. We've got toys that my two have both used loads and they look nowhere near as tatty as the jumperoo. It's the one thing I regret not buying new.

A single bed that had apparently never been used and was just a spare.

Smelled so badly of BO and cigarette smoke I left it outside for 4 days in the sun after a thorough wash. If we hadn't have been so terribly skint I would have binned it. The sellers were long gone and wouldn't reply to messages.

Other one was a Quinny buzz pram. It was supposed to be an upgrade from my 2009 version (it was supposedly a 2012 one, only a few months old)
Only when I got it home out of the dimly lit flat did I find that it was in fact older than mine by a few years as Quinny's have the manufacture date on no less than 4 large stickers all over it!!! It was so mucky that I had to strip it down and scrub every inch. I even repaired a few bits.

I then sold it on for a small loss but at least I knew it was in a beautiful clean condition and didn't feel like a robbing bastard to the next owner.

A coat for my dd which had biscuit crumbs on it and what looked like an egg yolk stain down the front, very worn & bobbly described as new without tags. Was pretty gross.
Went straight into the bin.

I bought a vintage fake fur coat that stank of 40 year old fag smoke. I dry cleaned it, hung it out on the line, sprayed it - still stank. I resold it on eBay for the same that I bought it for and got feedback saying it was wonderful and arrived just in time to wear for a wedding. Perhaps her nose didn't work too well.....

Pram here too. Described as perfect condition, absolutely stank of cigarette smoke. Had the strip the whole thing down to wash and leave it outside for a few days

'Brand New' Ebay jeans with additional used tissues and sweet wrapper in pocket and stained crotch.

I sent photos and got back full price plus return postage costs. I sent via recorded post and seller still tried to say parcel hadn't been returned.

A blouse on Ebay with yellow underarms, a hole in the sleeve and brown scorched iron marks.

Apparently I should have expected this as it wasn't sold as brand new...

About 6 or 7 years ago I bought a pair of Ugg boots second hand off eBay - they were black and what wasn't obvious from the pics was that both boots had large holes in the toes.
They were genuine Uggs which had been my main concern, and when I complained the seller asked what did I expect for that price!?? (It was an auction but I'd paid over £40)
Needless to say eBay sorted a refund for me.

My house. It was absolutely rank when we got the keys. Dog slevers on every window, dog & cat hair everywhere. I had to clean the oven three times and it's still not really clean. The carpets clearly hadn't been hoovered since we'd last seen it 7 weeks before, the bathrooms were disgusting and all the appliances were gross.

I'd deep cleaned our whole house prior to it going on the market and again when we exchanged - I just couldn't do that to someone.

A second hand fridge that hadn't been cleaned out, was mouldy and stank of cigarettes

A baby gro bag that looked fine on the outside but had dried on baby vomit all down the inside.

A highchair off a local fb selling site. It looked ok in the pictures. It was folded up when I collected it. The guy put it in my car when I arrived. When I got home and unfolded it I found it was absolutely filthy. Covered in crusty old food. The straps were minging. Old food in every nook and cranny. I can only think they'd taken the pictures another time. I couldn't believe that someone had sold it without cleaning it up.

@LidlAngel you sold it knowing it stank? :O did you at least warn the buyer beforehand?

I went to collect some wicker furniture for my DD's room. I asked if it was from a smoke free home as I've had problems collecting things that stink of fag smoke before. I was assured they didn't smoke, but did have a small dog, but that the furniture was in good condition.

When I arrived there were holes in the broken wicker, it was a rough finish and the whole surface was covered in blue mould.

I ummed and ahed about being able to clean it up and then realised I didn't actually have to take it and left. Why the fuck would someone think that mouldy furniture should be sold rather than taken to the tip?!

Pair of wellies for DD that were all split and the soles worn right through.
I was told what do you expect for toddlers shoes?!
I felt like saying well when you describe something as perfect condition that’s what I expected!

My H used to sell sportswear. He received an "unworn" tracksuit for a refund, only to find that it stank of BO and the crotch was stained with blood!

best of it is, the people that sell these things cannot be argued with! they see no wrong!

That’s what pisses me off more, the delusional people that describe things as ex cond and it’s fit for the bin! Even when I give stuff away for free I clean it etc as it’s embarrassing!

I admin a few fb sales sites and I recall someone complaining they were cleaning out a new 2nd hand fridge when their child found a half bottle of methadone inside. They were not happy.

Same as MistyMinge - a second hand high chair, was just for my mum when she has DS at hers, and at £10 I thought what a bargain, as you’re looking over double for a brand new one. The seller only lived literally round the corner and the pics and description said like new. Was all folded when I picked it up and the woman even said she had barely used it , when I got it to my mums, it became apparent that it was not in fact, like new. There was about a years worth of food in the creases and the straps were literally caked in food, thank god for my mum and her cleaning skills, after she was done with it, it really was like new!

I got his jumperoo brand new as a friend of mine told me about the state her second hand one came in and I didn’t want to risk it.

SIL has given me some of DNs old things over the past year or so and although I appreciate the fact that she didn’t even want any money for them, the condition was still appalling, like dried on food and stains all over everything, literally looked like she hadn’t bothered to clean them at all. I think I would be even more thorough with cleaning if I was giving stuff to someone I actually knew!
