I bought a beautiful jumperoo second hand from someone a few weeks ago for when the time is right for my DD. they cost a fortune bought new, and I've learnt my lesson on spending money buying things new for my daughter to hate them!

arranged collection, my dad was kind enough to pick it up for me, brought it back and there it is sitting in all its glory looking like money very well spent.

expect, it stunk of piss 😂

the fabric that covers the seat was absolutely honking of toddler pee! it didn't really make any difference, I removed the seat and stuck it in the washing machine on a very hot wash and cleaned up all the other plastic bits and it's good as new!

but why would you sell a second hand item (described as in perfect condition) that smells of wee?! I wouldn't sell anything to anyone without making sure it was clean!

what's the worst state something has been in that you've bought second hand?

A tent off eBay. The silver lining is that I now know the effect of putting away a tent when it's still damp and I've since become an expert in mending tent poles. Mind you, it saw the teenagers through three festivals and there was no need for me to be precious about the state it came back in!

Mine was a pair of shoes from eBay that stunk of cigarette smoke. I had to leave them outside as they smelled so bad.

Jakeyboy1 · 08/11/2017 23:08

Bought a"brand new" support pillow for breastfeeding off eBay. It had dog hair on it!

Highpeak · 08/11/2017 23:12

A Dyson from a woman who had six dogs. It took a lot of zoflora and bicarb to get rid of the smell

DC1 was into The Fimbles long after their heyday had passed, due to being handed down some DVDs by her cousins. When I found some "as new" Fimbles soft toys on ebay I was thrilled. So was DD1, once I'd washed the smell of skunk cannabis off of them.

I was getting rid of a beautiful wardrobe that had unfortunately picked up a musty smell with being unused for a long time. A neighbour asked if she could have it and I agreed providing I could get rid of the smell first. Neighbour wasn't fussed but I kept it a few days to disinfect every inch, treat the wood and dehumidify it completely. It took a hell of a lot of effort and quite a bit of money on products to sort out. Only after I was 100% satisfied it had nothing but a lovely smell would I give it away. I can't understand people who don't thoroughly clean what they sell! Have they no shame?

A skirt from Ebay, supposedly new with tags. When it arrived it stank of dog and had hairs on it. The 'tags' were from something completely different.

A thermal butter dish, also from Ebay which was meant to be unused. It arrived filthy and stank of rancid butter. It went straight in the bin. Seller wasn't interested and it was cheap so I left it, however soon afterwards they were no longer a registered user.

A vintage cardigan that I had been searching for. Seller had good feedback, cardigan arrived with huge holes in the back, near the bottom, I looked at repairing it as I really wanted it but it was too far gone. Seller refunded straight away and it went to the ragbag for recycling.

I bought a lovely leather jacket from Ebay, a few days later the Febreze wore off and it stunk of cigarette smoke Envy

AboutAGallonofDietCoke · 09/11/2017 00:08

I always wonder about this, people put stuff up on fb sites, clearly a bit grubby stating “works well, in need of a wash :)”

Is it just me that thinks FUCKING WELL WASH IT THEN!!!

I wouldn’t dream, of knowingly selling my kids stuff covered in food and crap, I’d be embarrassed.

I bought a tweed jacket for my father on eBay. It arrived and only had Lining In one sleeve and half the body. I emailed to complain and was told it was a summer -wool- jacket so only partially lined.

I got a refund.

I bought a pair of jeans on eBay that had period stains on the inside!
The seller was mortified, said she had sold them for her sister and refunded straight away. Still gross though!

Chrys2017 · 09/11/2017 00:23

A designer leather handbag on eBay that was greasy to the touch, filthy inside and smelled of damp. The seller agreed to take it back and someone else bought it and left them a glowing review!

Chrys2017 · 09/11/2017 00:33

@internetCrazies Would you tell me what products you used on your wardrobe? Have PMd you as I have a similar problem with a sideboard! It smells as though it was kept in a damp shed.

CazzieCatsRock · 09/11/2017 00:56

A few years back now, but a pair of boots on Ebay that had been 'worn once'. Looked good when they arrived, but when I tried them on, I pulled out the grottiest, mankiest, most disgusting pair of filthy, holey socks that had been left inside by the seller. Ugh, just gross.

A toddler bed that came from my friend's home which is absolutely filled with the smell of damp/ mould. DH is very sensitive to mould and he chucked the mattress outside the next morning, he couldn't bear it. I had washed the mattress cover but even so he binned it.

Friend sold her buggy online and got complains about the smell as well. I just don't have the heart to tell her but honestly, all her clothes smell of damp! I do think one gets used to it and stops noticing the problem.

Soubriquet · 09/11/2017 06:50

Double buggy

Advertised as used but in a fab condition

Sent dh to get it...he should have left it there

The covers were filthy, it reeked of dirt, the wheels needed replacing, there was old mouldy food in the seats...and it was just plain disgusting

We spent a fortune trying to get it up to scratch but just couldn't get that dirty smell away. Ended up throwing it away

whenever you can use paypal - you have much more rights, i buy on ebay a lot and its happened a couple of times never had a problem with refunds through paypal.

Iusedtobeawerewolf · 09/11/2017 07:05

Before I read your OP I was just coming on to say a Jumperoo! Stank of piss and was absolutely filthy.

I also bought a high chair from someone else that had food all over it and had never seen a cloth. The same woman also asked if I wanted to buy her son's cot-bed and mattress. The cot was fine but the mattress was brown and stained but she didn't see anything wrong with it and couldn't understand why I didn't want the mattress.

I have sold stuff before and even give stuff away and always made sure they were spotless. I would be so embarrassed to sell something that was filthy.

seething1234 · 09/11/2017 10:35

A Moby wrap that was covered in long white pet hair.

WhyteKnyght · 09/11/2017 11:18

We bought some second hand bookshelves in mint condition and paid a man with van to transport them for us. They turned up with a bonus huge hole in the back and his apologies, after he didn't pack them properly in his van. I wasn't there at the time and DH paid him the full amount anyway. Hmm I still resent those shelves every time I walk past them!

Oh, and our house. Was supposed to be cleaned: the kitchen had layers of filth and we found a tin of Christmas biscuits in the cupboard (we bought the house in autumn of that year so they would have been a minimum of 9 months old assuming they weren't from Christmases long past....).
