To alert you to the fact that Topshop just changed its policy to let men into the women's changing rooms

Been made aware of this today: a 'gender fluid' man having a pop at Topshop because he wasn't allowed to use the women's changing rooms at their Manchester store:

twitter.com/travisalabanza/status/927198660089339904

Topshop have now been quoted as apologising to him, and saying they've changed their policy to get rid of sex-segregated changing rooms altogether.

Another shop to strike off the list. Am I the only one worried this is past the point of no return? Angry

The world has gone f* ing mad, what was wrong with male and female changing kept separate fgs.

Scabbersley · 07/11/2017 18:35

My dh won't try anything on in top man as he feels awkward going into the changing rooms with loads of teenage girls!

ICantFindAFreeNickName2 · 07/11/2017 18:36

Well I'm going to save a small fortune, as my DD will not be spending any of my money in Topshop.

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 07/11/2017 18:37

Tut, tut, how very naughty of you OP better get your tin hat on - don't you know that the little wimmin aren't allowed to talk about trans issues #nodebate #silencingwomenbullshit

formerbabe · 07/11/2017 18:39

I'm fine with it

Hmm Well done you...you're so 'cool'

badbadhusky · 07/11/2017 18:40

They have a rather boringly corporate Twitter account: mobile.twitter.com/topshop?lang=en-gb

RoseAndRose · 07/11/2017 18:41

I don't have a problem with it either.

They've not been communal for years.

Bunnychopz · 07/11/2017 18:41

Effectively Trans needs are being put above that of women’s needs. Often vulnerable women. Women have had to fight endlessly for their rights over the last few hundred years.

WinnieTheW0rm · 07/11/2017 18:43

"Well done you...you're so 'cool'"

And then people wonder why MN is seen as transphobic. Snidey comments such as this don't exactly look like reasoned discourse, and come across as an attempt to silence all those who are OK with this.

Of course, that might not have been the intent, but it's the effect.

Motherbear26 · 07/11/2017 18:44

It’s getting more like the Daily Mail on here every day. Years ago I worked in a clothes shop, quite often on the fitting rooms. It stocked both men’s and women’s wear and shock horror both genders used the same fitting rooms. It was never an issue. Not once because anti-trans sentiment wasn’t a thing thenHmm

DiegoMadonna · 07/11/2017 18:45

Unrelated to the changing room issue, I love this quote from the buzzfeed article:

Naturally I was already getting looks and stares as I always do, and that is the kind of thing you’re used to when you’re trans

I'm pretty sure it's because of your outrageous clothes and makeup. Your entire "style" screams LOOK AT ME. And then you complain about it and act like it's purely because you're trans.

Bunnychopz · 07/11/2017 18:45

Debate is healthy and important. Although I have heard that some are are trying to silence any discussion by labelling it transphobic/violent

WinnieFosterTether · 07/11/2017 18:45

I don't understand the people saying 'it's cubicles'.
If the male and female changing rooms all have individual cubicles then the 'genderfluid' man has no reason to feel frightened in the male changing area. He can go in a male cubicle. Problem solved.

Slimthistime · 07/11/2017 18:46

DJ "Oh ffs, that contravenes the Equality Act. Muslim and Sikh girls need single sex changing rooms, they are being discriminated against on the grounds of their religion"

But the Equality Act doesnt care about other women who want a safe space.Bonkers.

youarenotkiddingme · 07/11/2017 18:48

Don't all topshops have a topman section?

Surely they have facilities to allow both male and female customers to try on clothes? Whether that's separate rooms or whether it's single cubicles with full length lockable doors?

4dogs · 07/11/2017 18:49

Topshop need boycotting anyway cos of the tax dodging slime ball that owns it. I find it creepy when men hang around outside the female changing rooms, some always stand far too close and seem to be peering into the area.

VelvetSpoon · 07/11/2017 18:51

Fucking hell where is all this going to stop?

I'm glad that I
a) don't have daughters and
b) am too fat to shop in top shop.

In truth the last time I did shop in top shop about 20 years ago it was all still communal changing rooms.

Whilst that's a thing of the past I can think of plenty I've been in over the last 6 months where there were still curtained cubicles- Monsoon, Primark and New Look are just 3 that I know I've been in recently.

BlackBetha · 07/11/2017 18:52

It's one thing to have unisex changing rooms (quite normal in smaller shops where there might be only one or two cubicles anyway), but if you have a designated female-only area, then women/girls have a reasonable expectation not to encounter men in there.

MoistCantaloupe · 07/11/2017 18:52

@youarenotkiddingme He wouldn't go in the men's changing room. It 'wasn't safe for him'. Though of course women or girls are not allowed to feel unsafe around a biological man/transwoman. That would be transphobic.

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 07/11/2017 18:54

If he's gender fluid why didn't he just identify as a man that day? Or does that not suit his look at me agenda?

Llamacorn · 07/11/2017 18:54

I think it's fab for me - I'm disabled and can't manage changing rooms. At least this way my husband (cater) could come in and help me.
I don't get the big deal about it tbh.

WonderLime · 07/11/2017 18:55

Don't all topshops have a topman section?

Actually this is a good point, but I’m not convinced they do (or has things changed over the years?). If not, where someone who is trans try on clothes?

I am very much of the opinion generally speaking that women should be entitled to safe spaces, but I think situations like this are silly to get worked up about as people don’t change in a communal area - they change in cubicles.

I think it’s reasonable to argue against those flimsy curtains that don’t quite close all the way, but if it’s a cubicle with a door I honestly do not see the issue.

Twinkie1 · 07/11/2017 18:56

I think the saddest thing is that women feel they need a safe space from men in changing rooms which have individual cubicles.

southboundagain · 07/11/2017 18:58

"I don't have a problem with it either.

They've not been communal for years."

Ditto. Seems fine to me.

Scabbersley · 07/11/2017 18:59

I actually don't really care if men use the cubicles if there are doors on them. But the whiny, entitled aggressive tone of that 'gender fluid' twat on Twitter really grates. Is that how people get things done now. He sounded like an absolute spoilt brat.
