To buy 7 month old DD Christmas presents?

So DD will be 7 months old on Christmas Eve. I’m currently looking at what toys to buy her for Christmas, but when I’ve mentioned this to friends, a couple of them have asked me why I’m bothering buying her Christmas presents as she won’t understand what Christmas is.
AIBU to buy her a few toys to unwrap with her on Christmas Day? Did other people buy presents for their babies even though they didn’t know what Christmas or presents were? I think my friends are being a bit mean but wonder what other people think.

I bought my daughter presents for her first Xmas when she was seven months old, and my family and friends all bought for her too.
She obviously didn't have a clue what it was all about. All the presents got well used over the course of the following year and I have photos of her sitting amongst the pile of presents and wrapping paper.
I don't think it really occurred to any of us not to buy for her.

Well that’s what I thought. My SiL has already asked what I think she’d like. It’s just a couple of friends who’ve made me doubt myself.

Meh it is Christmas she will have a ball opening paper I have read this mainly on mumsnet that is is madness getting a baby presents I disagree of course it is mainly for the parents but why not

It wouldn’t have entered my head to not but presents for my dds first Christmas. At that age it’s easy as they don’t usually have lots of things

My son was a month old at his first Christmas. Got him a wee play mat (would have bought it anyway, but was nice for him to have a wee present). My mum, she went mental though, about 20 presents to open and a few hundred in cash!! My husband couldn't understand why she would spend so much on a baby (cash went into his savings though)

DD was only 3 months but she still had a few presents, just little things but something to open (ok, us to open). I know she had no idea what was happening but I couldn’t not get her anything all!

I did for my 3 month old last Christmas, some new, some recycled from older dd 5 who had long forgotten them and some charity shop finds. Purely because older dd probably would question if father Christmas had forgotten the baby!!

I would wrap a few things. I would get duplo as I bought mega blocks and they were rubbish, whereas duplo lasts until 3 or so. Maybe a nice sand and water table, useful for the spring / summer

Nice DVDs for when she is older. Maybe some books (can't go wrong)

I wouldn't not buy presents for anyone else in my family, so of course I would buy for DC. My DC1 was tiny at his first Christmas and I did him a stocking of bits that I opened for him. It would feel horrible to leave him out.

DD was 7 months at her first Christmas. DH and I bought our own presents for her (something small) - I opened DH's and he opened mine. We used it as an opportunity to buy something we wanted to buy for her. I bought Duplo, he bought some ducks for the bath - 20 years on, I can still remember.

One set of grandparents bought her high chair!

I bought presents for each of the dses, for their first Christmas - it honestly didn’t occur to me not to even with ds1 - it was a lovely day, and a lovely experience. The wider family got them gifts for their first christmases too.

I suppose, if I am honest, I did it for my own enjoyment and dh’s enjoyment - but there is absolutely nothing wrong with that! Christmas is supposed to be a fun, family time, and if you will enjoy getting your baby presents, wrapping them and then having the fun of unwrapping them with the baby on Christmas Day, then I say go for it! Enjoy yourself - it’s a lovely experience.

Mine have always had Christmas presents whatever the age , my dog gets Christmas presents so why would you not buy for a baby. They may not get what’s going on but you take the photo of them with the presents and then with the wrapping and it’s a lovely memory .

My son will be 10 months at Christmas and I've already got a few presents in. Stuff that he'll get use of and enjoy playing with. It's Fun for me to choose the stuff and although he won't know what's going on I'll get pleasure from seeing him play with his toys over time.
Also booked to visit santa which is for the photo really! This may be a step too far.

It'll be her first Christmas so I think it's nice to mark the occasion with a sentimental gift or 2. My DS was 2 weeks old at last Christmas and we bought him a "My first steiff" teddy bear as a momento.

My DS was 2 months old for his first Christmas, but I still got him a couple of bits.
It was mainly just a few small things like soft toys and a few clothes that I probably would have bought him anyway but wrapped up as a Christmas present.

I told all friends and family that they didn't need to bother getting him anything, especially as some had already bought gifts for him being born, but DM and DG still got a couple of things and some people gave me money to put away so I could use it for clothes as and when he grew into new sizes.

At 7 months then I'd say definitely get your DC presents if that's what you want to do, they're old enough to be fascinated and probably play with the wrapping paper etc.

DS will be 7 months and we’ve bought gifts, only a few (3 toys and a Christmas tree teether!) because frankly this Christmas is more for us than them and no presents would feel mean!!
Do it, it’s your Christmas not theirs!

We bought a few bits and pieces for them to open - things that we would have bought anyway, mainly, like clothes, toothbrushes, books, and a couple of toys.

DD1 was six weeks old at Christmas and I bought her a few bits! Would have felt weird not to.

I bought my 6 month old loads of presents at christmas. Yes it was for me rather than him but he's loved all his toys this year and I haven't had to buy any as he's gotten bigger during the year.
If you can afford it I don't see the harm.

You could always buy her things she will use and enjoy over the coming year even if she's too young for them just now. And maybe a keepsake for her first Christmas? We bought a really nice tree decoration and a copy of the night before Christmas for our son to keep as he gets older.

Mine will be the same age and I'm definitely buying her presents! Would feel odd not to.

Thanks everyone. I will definitely be buying her presents now. I can’t wait. Thanks for the Duplo idea as well. I hadn’t thought about that. I’ll definitely be getting her some books.

My baby is going to be ten weeks old and I’m planning on buying her some toys! Go for it, it’s her first Christmas!!

DD will be 6 months, it never occurred to me not to either. She will get toys for her next stage
