AIBU?

To buy 7 month old DD Christmas presents?

So DD will be 7 months old on Christmas Eve. I’m currently looking at what toys to buy her for Christmas, but when I’ve mentioned this to friends, a couple of them have asked me why I’m bothering buying her Christmas presents as she won’t understand what Christmas is.
AIBU to buy her a few toys to unwrap with her on Christmas Day? Did other people buy presents for their babies even though they didn’t know what Christmas or presents were? I think my friends are being a bit mean but wonder what other people think.

I don't think my 1 day old batted an eyelid never mind got overwhelmed opening his Christmas presents (with the help of big brother). Grin

Would the people who say no really not buy their baby or grandchild?

We spent £150 on presents for my first DC (age 6 weeks) it was massively extravagant and unecessary. My new DC will be 12 weeks at christmas and we are going to just buy clothes. Having said that we have already got tons of toys for the upcoming year whereas if your DC is your first you can buy toys/books for the next year of development. Just remember you have to store them all somewhere!!

Babies change a lot in a year, I'm sure there are plenty of things you could get that would be useful and fun to unwrap. The photos! And fun for the adults will enjoy sharing Christmas with the new baby. Why not!

Our babies are birthday buddies! Definitely getting him some presents, I would be buying him toys to play with as he could sit up, crawl etc anyway so why not just get them for xmas. And thanks to a suggestion on here, one present is a toy box for him (one of those canvas ones, £12.99 tk maxx!) which will have a helium balloon float out when it’s opened, he loves watching balloons.

Just don’t get sucked into buying ‘my 1st Christmas’ EVERYTHING like I did with my first baby. What the hell is a baby going to do with a ‘baby’s 1st Christmas’ mug 😂

I second not buying "Baby's 1st" stuff. I did buy a stocking but only because he was due so close to Christmas I wouldn't have been able to get a named one.

It's fun to buy babies presents and hardly expensive. A present could be a £1 rattle or some balled up paper in a box! And it will be fun for you. I buy my cat a present, a bag of cat treats. Why not? It's part of the fun of the day.

My DS will be 7 months at Xmas too. I've bought him a few token gifts but mainly so the older kids don't wonder why Father Christmas missed him out

I’m buying a few things for my ds who will be 4 mo but nothing big or expensive. Just something he can ‘open’ and more for my 5 you’d sake really, to show that FC brought him presents too. Otherwise I wouldn’t really bother. He doesn’t need anything, and if he did, I wouldn’t wait until Christmas to give it to him.

Buy her something lovely that will be special for her first Christmas. A first Christmas baby grow, a little brush set, a special book, loads of things. You will know it is her first Christmas gift from you and you will tel her.

"...a couple of them have asked me why I’m bothering buying her Christmas presents as she won’t understand what Christmas is."

Ignore them. Bah Humbugs!

I would add that this year I’m using the money to buy think to keep for future traditions. Like a Christmas Eve box, Santa plate, santa sack etc. So it matches my dd.

I’m struggling with that @HashtagTired. I want to get things that will come out every year but I have no idea what! My family had lots of things like that but I’m sure they weren’t bought specially (or expensively) with the thought that they would still be around through our whole childhoods or beyond. Yet I feel this pressure to pick the perfect stocking etc and to start traditions when I think these things are probably better if they come about organically.

Does that make any sense at all?

DS will be 6 months old at Christmas and I have ready bought him loads of presents! Surely one of the joys of having children is re-discovering Christmas morning with all the presents. I say go for it Smile

We’ve bought my DS (1 year) a Christmas present.
We haven’t spent a fortune he has one present and one Stocking Filler. But he will have some wrapping paper to enjoy 😂

@NinaMarieP it’s easier for me because it’s already been decided by what I got for dd who is 5 and what has stuck from previous years. She’s at the age now where what we do at Christmas really matters because she understands it all. She’s learning about the different meanings of Christmas and at home we’ve had practice runs for FC in previous years. So for us it’s just adding to that for dd. The key things are the Christmas Eve box and contents, sack, bauble and plate for Santa.

@HashtagTired I can’t wait to do the Christmas Eve box for DD when she’s older. My OH says I’m “cute” when I talk about it cos I get all excited.

@NinaMarieP This year I’m going to get DD a personalised Minnie Mouse from the Disney Store. They’re £9.99 if you spend £10 I think. I want to get something that she’ll use but can also have as a keepsake.

I think we’ll get her one main toy (not mega expensive, £30ish and then some smaller things like books and stocking size toys and the Minnie Mouse of course.

We bought a really nice tree decoration and a copy of the night before Christmas for our son to keep as he gets older.

Aw, that's a really nice idea (that I'm going to steal!). They'll come out every Christmas as a reminder of the first ever Christmas together.

We are thinking about getting a Marvel bear from build-a-bear @RaeCJ82. He has quite a few stuffed toys already but I’d like one that’s from his first Xmas.
