To think that Grease is the only film that could undergo analysis and still remain as beloved as ever?

Currently watching 'New:The Grease Story' on ch5+1. I love Grease. I was taken to see it with a friend for my 11th birthday treat and have loved it ever since.

My DC have all watched it. DD1, no remarkable effects other than a mutual love. DD2 and DS demanded 'Mum, can you please lip sync', when I clearly had to sing along. The judge my singing and I am found wanting!

Anyway, back to this programme, no matter how much they pick apart the film, I still love it! AIBU? I will not listen if you say I am

I really hate the way people have to deconstruct fucking everything and take the joy out of all of it.
Can you leave nothing alone?

GrinGrin I had the exact same hissy fit when I first read that Die Hard was a backlash movie. Is nothing sacred?

Yes, why don't we just wander along with our eyes shut, without pondering any deeper meaning or wondering about the messages our children are receiving.

Yup, fun suckers Grin
You'd think as well that if you were going to dissect a film and criticise it, you'd at least get the basics of the story right before putting forward examples of why it's rubbish when that didn't even happen in the first place! Smile

hotmilkandcrunchynuts · 06/11/2017 10:13

Indeed. A feminist critique isn't worth much when you haven't paid attention to or understood the film at all!

Well, I watched it as an 8 year old, the lyrics to Greased Lightning totally went over my head (to my head, the chick's'' ll scream for my cool car!")
I can also confirm I didn't automatically want to shimmy down drainpipes, get into boys cars drink, smoke or wrap my hair.

gamerwidow · 06/11/2017 10:23

I love the film but the message is awful. Make sure you dress sexy to get your man because having brains and kindness won’t cut it girls!!

gamerwidow · 06/11/2017 10:25

Tbf Grease isn’t as bad as Grease 2 with that ‘let’s do it for our country’ date rape bullshit!

thecatfromjapan · 06/11/2017 10:26

I’m well aware it’s sexist, but I don’t care! It was a time before everything was analysed to death!

Not true about it being 'well before the time ...'

I remember a lot of analysis about it when it came out. Shockingly, we were actually capable of analysis even all those years ago - the feminist movement was quite strong, you know!

There was outrage about the portrayal of sexual behaviour and the approbation of teenage sex; there was dissection of the working-class themes; and there was analysis of the gender politics. And lots of discussion as to the actual, real sexual orientation of the two leads (Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta).

There is something very interesting about cultural memory and personal memory. It's why we have the academic discipline of history - and people use archives to research the difference between actuality and people's personal memory.

If that is the message you got you totally missed the point.

As she was dressing herself up to look like what she thought he wanted, he was doing the exact same thing, but he was also working on being a better nicer person to be more like her, whereas she was trying to be less so.
It's not about "women be sexy or else" at all.

PumpkinSquash · 06/11/2017 10:27

She didn't have to dress sexy though, did she. She just thought she did. If she'd have stayed as she was in the last scenes, Danny would have met her in the Letterman's jacket, given up the T-birds cool status and therefore his friends. He was willing to grow up for her, and told his friends as much that they should be growing up as well as they're about to go to college.

upperlimit · 06/11/2017 10:39

Don't look elquinto it's as painful as it is accurate. Enjoy your Christmas movie.

DeleteOrDecay · 06/11/2017 10:46

Yeah Grease isn’t my thing at all. The song lyrics are dodgy and there are a few other moments in the film that pp have already mentioned that are a bit creepy (don’t remember him pushing her into the sea though) plus I never liked musicals and I won’t be letting my dc watch it in a hurry as I don’t feel it sends a very good message to young impressionable girls.

JaneJeffer · 06/11/2017 10:49

Do you not think it was more about Danny realising that he didn't have to be a hard man and that it was fine to be emotional and he would still be respected by his male friends?

I love the Beauty School Dropout scene.

PumpkinSquash · 06/11/2017 10:56

(don’t remember him pushing her into the sea though)

You don't remember it because it didn't happen. She got cramp. He saved her life, she nearly drowned.

TammyswansonTwo · 06/11/2017 10:58

Seriously, how the fuck anyone is comfortable showing this to their kids is beyond me. Bunch of misogynistic shite. Of course I didn't pick up on that when I saw it as a kid, and played "pink ladies" in the playground as a 7 year old, but then that's how these messages get in, isn't it?

JaneJeffer · 06/11/2017 11:00

Sing it Pumpkin Grin

kaitlinktm · 06/11/2017 11:01

Slimthistime and here you are, saying women should not change for men with the user name.. Slim... this.... time....

OMG how rude - I can't believe you would assume this! I am glad Slim put you right.

I rewatched it last night for the first time in years - I was pissed off at the end with Kenickie - once Rizzo wasn't pregnant, then he would do her the immense favour of going out with her again - never mind that he could well have been the father (despite what she said). And she was happy with this. It annoyed me more than Sandy's transformation.

Sparklingbrook · 06/11/2017 11:03

I can't be bothered to overthink Grease. it's not a true story, I mean the car flies at then end. Hmm
I can watch it as long as i can fast forward some of it. It's way too long and I don't really like random bursting into song stuff.

JaneJeffer · 06/11/2017 11:04

Tammy I grew up in the 70's when misogynistic shite was the norm on TV and it did not make me accept it, in fact quite the opposite! Your children might appreciate what the have nowadays!

PumpkinSquash · 06/11/2017 11:05

Sing it Pumpkin Grin

"Wella, wella wella oomph!"

lol

Willow2017 · 06/11/2017 11:14

gamer
It didnt matter what 'Sandy. was dressed as as 'Danny' changed for her and decided that she was more important then being 'cool'.
He told his mates they needed to grow up, couldnt be in a 'gang' forever, that she came first.

You missed that bit in your rush to trash the film.

Theresnonamesleft · 06/11/2017 11:17

Apologies mixed up one of the stage plays with the film.

It is a shame that so much of the script was changed. Not the original 71 Chicago play, but the73 version. This would have given a bit of a better message. It sees Sandy standing for herself against the pink ladies ( sandy dee song wasn’t in the bedroom, but in a park) and Sandy calls them out.
She also calls Danny out for not standing up for her and letting everyone think she’s easy,
Plus there’s no flying car at the end.

However she still changes for him. From memory he makes no changes

Becles · 06/11/2017 11:20

Not to be rude but Danny didn't save Sandy's life.

When they're describing the first meeting to their friends in the song Summer Lovin',

He said: saved her life, she nearly drowned

She said: he ran by me, got my suit damp

As you were
