Aibu to be massively panicking about a pup I bought yesterday? European passport

Very stupidly bought a dog yesterday who came with a pet passport issued in Latvia.
All vaccines were stamped in the book and micro chipping also in there.
Thought nothing Of it until I mentioned to a police friend who said this is one of the biggest scams going and he probably doesn't have any vaccines including rabies and threadworm which he could now transfer to my kids.
I feel sick with worry.
What a stupid idiot I am.
No vets will see him as he's not yet registered and its now emergencies only.

Tika77 So you'll happily buy potentially puppy farmed dogs from abroad to save money?

That's nice.

isthismummy · 05/11/2017 12:06

Yes wrenika we are just such kill joys on this thread. I mean, why should we be so bothered that the op puppies mother is probably dead from a diy c section now?

Let's just all go awww at the cute dog picture instead. Only we can't even do that because that dog doesn't look very well!

Ohforgodsake000 · 05/11/2017 12:06

Throwing cabbages?
Pretty bully like behaviour but guess that must be your personality
I've come on here fully accepting my mistake. I'm not looking for people to say don't worry you didn't make a mistake, I was hoping there may be some kind people maybe some who had been through or even just heard of similar incidents who could help talk me through it until Monday when the vets will see him.
No need for the nastiness.
I haven't done anything illegal, I've bought a dog given with all paperwork that I believed to be correct and upon reflection and after speaking to a friend who is a police officer I'm now concerned this isn't true.
As I said already, he was with another dog at the time and she had 3 young children there at the time we bought him.
I will look up distemper though and mention to the vet.

Isthismummy... no, I’f happily but from proper breeders in Europe just like I have done with my current dog. As I said in my post.

Chapterandverse · 05/11/2017 12:10

How does this work? I must be totally naive. Did you just hop on a plane to Latvia and bring the pup home?

LoverOfCake · 05/11/2017 12:11

OP you seriously cannot expect people to believe that if you have a MIL who works in the veterinary profession that she would advocate buying puppies from prloved and doesn't know about the European puppy farming trade.

It also doesn't make sense that you would be looking for a dog for over six months and then buy one from preloved when you essentially could have done that from the outset. Why this puppy? Why now? And why preloved?

Wolfiefan · 05/11/2017 12:11

Not illegal no.
Just daft and immoral.
You must have realised there is a major issue with puppy farmed dogs. You must've wondered why they were happy to ship this dog over, why it was older and that there could be issues with dogs brought from abroad.

isthismummy · 05/11/2017 12:11

How do you establish they are proper breeders Tika77

I can only assume you travel over there, meet the pup in person before buying, see it's mother, and make sure it has all breed relevant health testing etc?

Ohforgodsake000 · 05/11/2017 12:11

This is another picture just to show his actual size.
I'm not sure what you mean about him looking unwell, have you ever seen a bulldog who looks happy?
They do generally have the same appearance.

I've been looking for a while and if I'm honest there seemed to be many a scam going on in various selling sites, people asking for deposits beforehand, people advertising in local cities and then it became apparent the dog was in " the Isle of Man " and would need shipping over.
I didn't actually realise rhe mother wasn't there until I arrived.
I asked on the phone and she said yes, when I got there she had pictures of the mum with the litter but said mum was in her home country of Latvia with her parents.
Hindsight is now a wonderful thing however I'm not a bad person honestly or I wouldn't be so worried now would I.

Ohforgodsake000 · 05/11/2017 12:20

I'm not saying the welfare doesn't matter of the mother.
Why did I contact DEFFRA and the RSPCA as soon as it became apparent this may not be what it seemed if I didn't give a shit?
You're being pretty unkind here now when I'm trying my best to sort the best out for this puppy and report them for it to be investigated

I'm calling bullshit on your "mother in law" being a "vet nurse". Or surgeon for that matter. If she knew you were buying this dog she absolutely would not have agreed that buying a 'foreign' dog from a website was a good idea. The vets and vet nurses I know would be fucking horrified at the idea of me, or you, doing that! They also would not be coming over to give your dog some sort of medicine from Pets@home. My vet told me not to even bother with the cat worm/flea treatments from Pets@home and just get the ones prescribed by them because as a non-trained person why would I be able to buy any sort of real medication just off a shelf? Its no more effective than bloody 'cough medicine' from Asda. So no your "vet nurse MiL" wouldn't just be bringing some sort of special medicine she can get from Pets@home.

As it is, if you also did have a vet nurse/surgeon in your life I highly suspect that instead of posting a panicked message on here you would have been on the phone to your "MiL" and would also have got this information from her BEFORE the dog was bought, rather than from a "police" friend. The FIRST person I speak to, ever, if I think there is something amiss with my cat is my cousin who is a Vet Nurse. If she thinks it sounds odd she tells me to go to a vet or what I can do at home to sort the situation. Not effing Mumsnet!

You have done a stupid and irresponsible thing. You need to get that dog to a vet ASAP and stop posturing and minimising your actions.

I am so angry about this thread. I hope this poor puppy isn't supposed to be a christmas present.

Tika77 · 05/11/2017 12:25

ISTHis... I’ve been browsing forums for years in my mother tongue, Imcould have travelled but I didn’t, done my research, don’t worry. Yes, all DP certificates of parents were online etc.
Not a big deal really, there are cheap flights to everywhere in Europe if someone wants to do it this way.
So your assumptions are correct. Not so difficult to do really.
Ah, and I’ve had a bad experience with a KC registered breeder before so that’s not a guarantee either.

Ohforgodsake000 · 05/11/2017 12:25

Well all depends with the relationship you have with your MIL I suppose
She wouldn't be my first port of call regardless of her job as we don't see each other all that much due to having a long old distance between us.
She didn't advise us to buy it, just mentioned when I last spoke to her to ensure if not born in the UK that the passport is up to date with microchip and vaccinations.

OP posts:
isthismummy · 05/11/2017 12:26

So the woman lied about the whereabouts of your puppies mother and you STILL gave her £1800?

Why?

usualGubbins · 05/11/2017 12:27

Wondering why if she was so keen on getting a bulldog, the OP didn't go to Bulldog Rescue www.bulldogrescue.org.uk/ plenty of them on there for a fraction of the price paid.

Bigkingdom · 05/11/2017 12:28

English Bulldogs CAN give birth without a c-section! I know many breeders who have bred their English Bulldogs successfully so please do some research!

Cactusjelly00 · 05/11/2017 12:28

My old friend/neighbour did this. The dog died within 22hrs of coming home with her, I think it had parvovirus? I'm not sure - but I do remember going around there to help clean it all up. There was blood and watery poop all over her kitchen floor and the cries the dog made during it all were horrific.
The more people fund horrible breeders the more they continue and the more the above happens that's why everybody is so upset/angry OP.

SilentlyScreamingAgain · 05/11/2017 12:29

Yep, I think that's a fairly forgiving way to treat those who fund the torture and abuse of animals, I'd rather you got a couple of years in prison.

isthismummy · 05/11/2017 12:29

So you just order the dogs from abroad without seeing them first Tika77?

Are you telling me the breeders happily sell dogs to people they've not even met before sending them?

ColinCreevy · 05/11/2017 12:30

This just makes me so angry and sad. You don't give a damn about the animal, you've just gone and got the latest trendy breed and helped to fund an abhorrent trade abroad. If you've genuinely owned dogs before I don't believe you're so ignorant that it didn't seem dodgy to get a dog with a European passport off a bloody preloved site. It's common knowledge that you should be going to either reputable breeders or UK rescue homes.
I'm totally disgusted.

MiserableFucker · 05/11/2017 12:30

My painfully thick SIL bought a cavalier puppy online. I mean online as in put in the shopping cart and paid via PayPal. Went to collect from the persons home where they had several dogs of several different breeds and she STILL didn’t think that was odd. I have reported it but as far as I know they are still up and running Hmm

SilentlyScreamingAgain · 05/11/2017 12:32

I'm not sure that funding the import of an animal without the correct paperwork is legal.
