Aibu to be massively panicking about a pup I bought yesterday? European passport

Very stupidly bought a dog yesterday who came with a pet passport issued in Latvia.
All vaccines were stamped in the book and micro chipping also in there.
Thought nothing Of it until I mentioned to a police friend who said this is one of the biggest scams going and he probably doesn't have any vaccines including rabies and threadworm which he could now transfer to my kids.
I feel sick with worry.
What a stupid idiot I am.
No vets will see him as he's not yet registered and its now emergencies only.

deepestdarkestperu · 05/11/2017 11:21

No I didn't buy him on a doorstep, I went into a home that looked lived in

But the principle is the same. You don't know this woman from Adam. She advertised the dog on a website WELL known for attracting scammers and puppy farms. She wanted £1800 for him, which you willingly handed over without knowing the true story about the health of the dog or it's parents.

viques · 05/11/2017 11:24

Another timely update! Mil is now demoted to vetinary nurse, not vetinary surgeon. honestly OP , I am beginning to wonder..............

ghostyslovesheets · 05/11/2017 11:24

No vets will see him as he's not yet registered and its now emergencies only - even your MIL Hmm

ghostyslovesheets · 05/11/2017 11:26

oh right - yes that suits the narrative a bit bet hey ! - get's the story nicely back on track - it's very easy to confuse your MIL being an actual VET with her being a vet nurse ...

Dobopdidoo1 · 05/11/2017 11:26

What on earth possessed you to buy a dog on preloved and given your experience with bulldogs plus your MIL being a vet nurse (how you made the mistake calling her a surgeon initially is also weird) you still chose to buy one imported from Latvia instead of a good reputable breeder?

im sorry this has happened hun.lets stop the blaming now.i think three pages of harsh words is enoughwhen your clearly doing enough to yourself already.
because where future and past worrying lies demons and more unhappiness.when all you can actually change or live in is the RIGHT NOW.you can make it better for the dog from now on.you can ease the critics voice in your own head by simply accepting you think you've fukd up but lifes ok.all hasn't imploded.youve got a dog, alife now to look after and could make it really happy and it you.
its here now.this has happened. so smile.help it feel loved.
you can only worry about the vaccinations when you have seen the vets.dont dread or predict wha tisnt hre until you've spoken and had him checked.for today do the best you can.then tomorrow do so again.
itl be ok.somehow it will be.or at least can be the best in the situation you have been handed.take care.xx

ShirleyPhallus · 05/11/2017 11:29

£1800?!

Ohforgodsake000 · 05/11/2017 11:34

I was thinking out loud when I wrote surgeon, was meaning to write not a surgeon so people didn't then start asking what they have which is why she couldn't see him.
She isn't a qualified vet practitioner, just a vet nurse.
She lives a long distance so agreed to come today to have a look before we can get him looked at.

I hope this is bullshit otherwise 😡

Fucking hell some people literally do not have the faintest sense of responsibility.

Reflecting on my decision as poor as it was doesn't undo it though does it.
I can only deal with the situation now.
I have apologised to those upset by this.
I'm pretty upset myself.
Grown up children as I said, not babies therefore the difference between getting a 12 week and a 20 week didn't seem all that important.

i wish it was licenced again might stop all these websites and idiot buyers

SilentlyScreamingAgain · 05/11/2017 11:48

Get him insured today before he sees a vet.

viques · 05/11/2017 11:48

kateandme if you read through the thread I think you will find that most people are angry with the OP because by her self admitted stupidity she is supporting and encouraging unregulated, cruel, inhumane breeding practices that are cynically producing damaged unhealthy dogs for huge profit. Frankly I doubt most of us give a tinkers cuss for the OPs emotional health at the moment, we are concerned for the poor puppy, and all the other puppies and dogs who are kept and reared in appalling conditions just to satisfy the selfish needs of people who can't even be bothered to research their purchase for as long as it takes to google dogs imported from Eastern Europe, or bulldog breed health issues.

I am willing to bet that a lot of people spend more time researching their new TV set than they do their new pet.

I am out of this thread now, it is making me angry.

BadTasteFlump · 05/11/2017 11:55

Get him insured today before he sees a vet.

That would be pretty pointless. There will be enough disclaimers written in to any Policy to cover situations like this coming to light after somebody has 'innocently' bought pet insurance. Insurance companies aren't stupid.

ItsNachoCheese · 05/11/2017 11:57

£1800?! Confused

This. Worth repeating several times over.

Tika77 · 05/11/2017 11:58

The dog seems fine, doesn’t it? Have you looked into rabies symptoms yet?
In my opinion it was really silly to pay this much for a dog, they’re a lot cheaper in Latvia, I’m sure.
If you have children I’d be more worried about behaviour issues the dog might have. I also have my dog from Hungary, from a proper breeder. Bit someone just handing their dog over like that... is a worry.
And my opinion won’t be popular here but my next dog won’t be from the UK either. They’re far too expensive when you can get decent dogs in Europe. (And I know UK breeders will have to pay more for ver checks etc.)

SilentlyScreamingAgain · 05/11/2017 11:58

I've no problems whatsoever in shaming the OP for what she's done. In fact I'd be happy to put her in public stocks and watch the local youth throw cabbages at her. This miserable, abusive trade won't be stopped while people are handing ove the best part of £2k on a doorstep to reward it.

She can love that dog until her head falls off, it won't go back and right the wrong of what's happened to its mother and it won't fix the dog's hips, eyes or cure its inability to breathe normally. Those health problems will take a lot of cash to put right.

Jaxhog · 05/11/2017 11:59

Coming from Europe and with a reddened eye, I'd be slightly more worried about distemper. It's very rare here, but more common in Europe (still fairly rare). Best thing is to keep your dog away from other dogs and cats i.e. indoors, until you can get him to the vet for a full checkup. Distemper does not affect humans.

He looks lovely, btw.

4 to 14 weeks is the window for puppy socialisation. After that it becomes much harder to get them used to new experiences, people etc.

Your children may not be babies, but you have still brought a powerful, potentially unsocialised dog into their home.

Unless the breeders have been carefully socialising him up to this point of course? Taking him out and about, getting him used to people, other dogs etc? Obviously you'll have throughly checked all that out when you bought him?

LoverOfCake · 05/11/2017 12:01

So let me get this straight:

You have been researching buying a dog for six months, and then, one Saturday, on a wim, you popped on to preloved, found these five month old puppies for sale for 1800 quid, and just had to get one?

What stopped you from buying a puppy in the preceding six months? Could it be that no reputable breeder would touch you with a barge pole?

wrenika · 05/11/2017 12:02

Good luck - and don't panic. Get him checked out by the vet, ensure everything is up to date, then start his puppy training. It's easy for everyone to make out how disastrous this will be, but we had two collies bought from a non-registered breeder who it seemed on visiting his place, was breeding to sell as he had multiple bitches and litters, although it was a working farm so maybe just a side-line. I had no decision in this purchase, I was a teen at the time, but they were perfectly good dogs. Healthy, happy...my parents just had one of them pts a few weeks ago sadly with cancer aged 9, but her sister is going strong and making friends with the new dog.
It's not ideal knowing nothing about him, but it's not the end of the world either. All the grumpy people on this thread aren't actually helping.
