Short and sweet!

AIBU to allow 5yr old DS to watch TV in his room when he wakes up at sparrows at the weekend?

6am isn't that bad. DS (10) still wakes up at that time and has been reading / playing on his own for years. When he was waking at 5 / 5.30 he had to try and go back to sleep until 6.

BrutusMcDogface · 03/11/2017 21:57

I would never let an almost four year old go downstairs on their own early in the morning!! No way.

No TVs in bedrooms here, either, but we have been known to send them off back to their bedrooms with the iPad every now and then to play games if it's too early for us to get up (ie, before about 6!! They're early risers)

Grimbles · 03/11/2017 21:57

Wouldn't you rather he spent that time using his brain?

Who the fuck uses their brain at 6am on a weekend morning Grin

If he is awake at 6am cant he just play in his room with toys?

Haha! Grin

HaHaHmm · 03/11/2017 21:59

I think that if you can trust him to watch TV in his room then you can trust him to watch it downstairs.

I know you plan for him only to watch in the morning but bedroom TVs are terrible sleep hygiene. Would it not be a distraction, even switched off, at bedtime?

Floralnomad · 03/11/2017 22:01

My dc always had / have TVs in their rooms, from about 5/6 neither have ever really watched TV . Ds uses his for gaming and dds hangs on the wall gathering dust and it’s always been the same .

megletthesecond · 03/11/2017 22:02

I wouldn't.
Can you set your main tv to kids channels so he can watch it downstairs if he's up early?

Thegiantofillinois · 03/11/2017 22:02

One of used to get up and stagger downstairs with ds at that age, so the other could sleep in. Used to doze on the sofa for a bit. Used to get a lot done by 10am on weekends!

Grimbles · 03/11/2017 22:03

My rational brain agrees it's not a good idea, my irrational yougottabeshittingme it's just gone 6 brain says who cares Blush

I hate all this whining about kids getting up early.

It is what they do.

ColinCreevy · 03/11/2017 22:04

I can't believe 5 year olds have tv's in their rooms. Just tell them to play with toys when they wake up too early!
Needing to watch tv/films to get to sleep is really bad too. There's other options like quiet music or audiobooks that don't throw out a load of (sleep hindering) blue light.

InDubiousBattle · 03/11/2017 22:05

I wouldn't because I would be nervous that he'd wake up even earlier to watch it.

Grimbles · 03/11/2017 22:06

I think I may continue the dozing on the sofa for the time being. Mamamamamememememoremilkshake.....

No TV in bedrooms here! DD is allowed to go down and turn the telly on, I showed her quite early on how to operate the remote and where to find CBEEBIES!! Before she could do it herself, dh had to go downstairs with her. Either way, no getting up at dawn for me!

NotTheDuchessOfCambridge · 03/11/2017 22:10

Yeah go ahead, my 6yo DS has a tv in his room and he watches it about an hour a week. He’d rather be downstairs with us. It is possible for a child to have a tv in their room and the parent to still control it, that’s modern technology for you!

Fairylea · 03/11/2017 22:11

My initial thought was “no way would I allow a tv in a bedroom” but then I’ve just realised I frisbee my sons iPad into his room when he wakes at 5.30/6am at the weekend so I can lay in bed for an hour while he watches kids you tube and plays games. He’s 5. BlushGrin oh well! Whatever works!

crimsonlake · 03/11/2017 22:11

I would not be letting a 4 year old downstairs on their own in the morning, they could be getting up to anything whilst you are still in bed.

OpenThePickles · 03/11/2017 22:13

Do you people ^ ever allow your kids some down-time? Honestly that is the most ridiculous comment I think I've ever seen on here, get a bloody life.

Unihorn · 03/11/2017 22:15

I love the parents who are outraged by TVs in bedrooms but give their children tablets to play on, or allow them to watch TV downstairs anyway. Wtf is the difference?

This.

BrioAmio · 03/11/2017 22:18

No TVs in any bedrooms, books or audio CDs yes but no TV.

SparklyUnicornPoo · 03/11/2017 22:18

Who the fuck uses their brain at 6am on a weekend morning Same kind of weirdo that willingly gets up at 6am on a weekend morning Wink

Personally I wouldn't, for the simple reason that I did let DD and got woken up at 3am by the TV going on one too many times, so I took it out her room, but your DS might be more trustworthy than DD, so it depends if you think you can trust him to only watch it at times you've said are ok.

LadyLapsang · 03/11/2017 22:21

Children with televisions in their bedrooms don't do as well as their peers at school and are more likely to have sleep problems. Also, I understand a having a television in the bedroom is strongly associated with being overweight.
