Are you an aeroplane seat recliner??

If so, do you not feel a bit guilty about the poor sod sat behind you who now has even less space than they had before??

I don't understand why airlines still allow this, there isn't the room for it!

During a long flight last night/this morning/I don't know I've lost all track of time, I wasn't able to use my telly as the woman in front made sure it was RIGHT in my face and don't even get me started on meal time.

So are you a seat recliner and if so, do you think about the impact on the person behind you?

And which airline is it you can get your head in someone's lap? I would love to fly with them! I recline to the max and would describe it more like "slightly tilted back a couple of degrees more than a regular seat".

SD1978 · 04/11/2017 02:23

I’m a recliner- I always give a warning recline- move the seat a little so the person behind is aware I’m onthe move. I don’t ask- as I’m going to do this regardless to get some sleep. If you never recline on flights, I guess I see your point, but I fly for 12+ hr flights- I would like to be comfortable. Always sit up
For meals, although have noticed many people don’t.

But before boarding the plane there was no way of knowing if there would be adequate legroom or not

Of course there is. Go to Seatguru, put in the flight number and you will see exactly what plane you're flying and seat maps including pitch and extra legroom ones.

Kpo58 · 04/11/2017 07:39

Nonsense. Of course you can. Move your legs to one side. Job done.

That's the most funny thing i've read all thread. If you cannot sit normally, there is no space to move both legs to one side. Even if you end up sitting like a stereotypical bloke, you end up with both knees being crushed between each seat in front.

I'm beginning to wish that they charged extra for seats that recline.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 04/11/2017 07:41

Hate flying.

RhiWrites · 04/11/2017 07:45

This thread is doing a great job of simulating the British on an airplane. It starts off polite but as time progresses becomes more and more irritable.

Plane seats are really small and uncomfortable. At 5ft3 I find them cramped. I can’t imagine how vile it must be to be 6ft3 and fly.

I agree that seats are designed to recline but I don’t decline mine until the person in front of me does and I look back first to see if I’m going to upset a drink, squash a baby (unlikely) or squash a laptop (why has no one mentioned this? A sudden recliner nearly killed one of my laptops.)

But deliberately kneeing people or hitting them is assault. Please don’t let the horrible cramped spaces turn you into that person. Complain to the airlines. They’re the ones to blame for the conditions.

I hate recliners.

Hairbrush? Book? If you like, but my packet of kale curls (or whatever we were given to go with our drink) happened to spray onto the reclined head that I could see over the top of my tray. He returned his seat to upright pretty quickly then.

N0tNowBernard · 04/11/2017 11:06

I once had a lady say to me really loudly "excuse me but can you please move your seat forward as I haven't got any room back here" in a really huffy voice.

It was quite funny telling her that actually my seat wasn't reclined! I had to recline it just to prove it to her. She never even said sorry for the mistake. I felt like leaving it reclined after that (but never did).

Urubu · 04/11/2017 11:09

Sometimes our body types mean we have to spend extra money.. things are generally based on the majority. Tall people need to purchase extra leg room, larger people have to buy 2 seats. Short people need to pay to get all there pants taken up, Women with large chests need to fork up ridiculous money for supportive bras.. it's life. Can't expect other people to suffer sitting upright because they paid for a reclining seat but got stuck in front of someone who doesn't like it
Very good point

AccrualIntentions · 04/11/2017 11:28

They didn't pay for a reclining seat, they paid for a seat, which happens to recline. Same as the poor bugger stuck behind them paid for a seat. Charging extra for seats that recline is a great idea.

dointhedo · 04/11/2017 11:46

Just home from 12hr Cathay Pacific flight from HK. Everyone reclined. Plenty of room.

Always used to prefer flying with Cathay Pacific whenever I could for this reason - the chairs recline but into themselves somehow, so that it doesn’t affect the person behind.

MinervaSaidThar · 04/11/2017 11:58

@Oblada

I have been in a long haul flight with my little one on my lap and the fucker in front tried to recline. This would have meant a very very miserable flight for us both and others really.

To the 'fucker' in front, you were the 'fucker' preventing him from using his seat as the airline intended. You and your child are not his fucking problem.

Cinnamon12345 · 04/11/2017 12:26

Of course , that's what the recline buttons for.

No, not even on 15 hour flight. And I always ask the person in front of me to let me know before they recline their chair. I'm visually impaired though, and sometimes my nose is literally on the TV trying to see, so if they suddenly recline their chair, I get not in the face Face. I have been before, so now I always ask.

AccrualIntentions · 04/11/2017 12:51

Charging extra to sit behind a seat that doesn’t recline is an even better idea.

They already do, they're called the emergency exit seats and, as we've been told ad nauseum on this thread, tall people or anyone who finds being behind a recliner painful or uncomfortable should pay extra to sit in them.

This alternative would nicely solve the problem because a recline is purely a nice-to-have not an issue of pain and discomfort.

SnobblyBobbly · 04/11/2017 12:57

Umm yes. Everyone can recline if they wish so it’s personal choice.

I’m not a total arsehole, I do only do it if I’m sleeping. Quite often one persons short haul, is a leg of someone else’s long haul journey so I think that should be kept in mind.

MinervaSaidThar · 04/11/2017 12:58

because a recline is purely a nice-to-have not an issue of pain and discomfort.

Have you read the thread? Some posters have clearly said a seat in upright position causes them pain and discomfort.

gingergenius · 04/11/2017 13:03

I have knee problems and an issue with slipped discs. Sitting upright for me is torture. I’m short too so the lumbar and neck supports don’t work for me and I can barely move after a flight. Which is why I’ll pay extra to use Norwegian or Thomson Dreamliners because the seat design is superior and therefore more comfortable. But if I can’t, or even if I gave and they’ve changed the plane at the last minute, I will recline if I need to, apart from mealtimes and always with consideration.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 04/11/2017 13:04

Once had a family (they were German as it happens) steal our seats because they wanted to sit together as a family. We agreed because we didn't have to move too far. They then complained when we reclined our seats even though the seats in front of us were reclined. We've also had a mother flying alone with two young girls. She popped a sleeping tablet and spent the flight snoring while her girls kicked our seats and screamed. We were unreasonable for complaining.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 04/11/2017 13:08

OMG it's so god to know I'm not the only one! My DP thinks I'm just a whinger but the seats are just ... wrong ...
