To think the Brexit referendum result should be set aside if allegations of corruption are proved?

Vanity Fair article about this

Just like the US election last year, there is more and more evidence emerging now that some parts of the Leave campaign were fundedy in very shady ways. Also, social media was manipulated to feed personalised fake news to voters before the referendum. Even the ludicrous #usepens seems to have been pushed by Russian bots as a way of undermining confidence in the electoral process.

We are teetering on the brink of making the biggest political mistake of my lifetime (and I'm in my 50s and remember a good many other bad times). That's bad and bad enough, but if it wasn't even a legitimate vote surely it should just be set aside?

How about a musical interlude

So we should set aside the referendum result because there was outside influence on the leave side? What about all the fake news and outside influence from the remain side? Its swings and roundabout in a referendum/vote.

We shouldn't have anther vote because that would give the EU the power to screw us over monumentally.

And we shouldn't ignore the result because it would plunge us into decades of uncertainty that would devastate the country.

If we dont have enough nurses then shame on us, we should train more.

The best outcome is to take advantage of independence and stand tall again.

shhhfastasleep · 03/11/2017 20:36

I voted Remain. Some of the shit that I heard from the Leave side has fundamentally changed the way I think about many of my fellow citizens. But Remain lost. I am bitter about the result but it can’t be undone. I do what I can to insulate my family from the crap we are heading for- but if you voted for this and it bites you on the arse, I give less if a shit for your situation than I used to. Shame on all of us.

:)
Good luck with that.

Chattymummyhere · 03/11/2017 20:50

Both sides lied. Both sides supporters lied.

I saw things saying you wouldn’t be able to holiday in Spain if we left Grin and of course the big bus for the leave side Grin

I got a whole little booklet though my door telling me unbiasedly how great the EU was. Not a thing telling me the reasons to leave.

We all have our own minds and can research for our selfs before voting though.

No vote was the wrong vote apart from not using your vote.

Figmentofmyimagination · 03/11/2017 21:07

Today's expert report says brexit will cost each family another £930 a year on their food bills - on top of the food inflation we've already seen since the brexit vote.

That's a seriously large extra sum to find every month, even allowing for their dubious status as 'experts' and therefore to be spurned.

KennDodd · 03/11/2017 21:07

No vote was the wrong vote apart from not using your vote.

I don't agree. I think the level of knowledge and research needed to be properly informed on this was far, far beyond what is reasonable to expect from the average voter. We just weren't qualified to make a decision on this and to claim we are is all just part of the anti expert agenda. I know a couple of people who normally vote in every election but didn't vote in the referendum because the issues were too complex. At least they realised the limitations of their knowledge and how important it was not to make the wrong decision.

Figmentofmyimagination · 03/11/2017 21:09

Loving the bit about 'standing tall' etc. That's when democracy starts to get a bit scary, and the reason why we traditionally do representative democracy in this country, and not referenda. What a disaster.

ginghambox · 03/11/2017 21:15

No it doesn't, it says COULD if there is no deal.

KennDodd · 03/11/2017 21:22

Did it say how much it would cost if we do get a deal?

ginghambox · 03/11/2017 21:31

Unless they have a crystal ball and know the exact deal how could they possibly say,

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 03/11/2017 21:31

£4.25

Fact

Humpsfor20yards · 03/11/2017 21:54

It doesn't matter about rising food prices because we will be independent and standing tall.

(No I've no idea what that is supposed to mean but it seems to go down well)

OliviaPopeRules · 03/11/2017 22:08

* A lot of Leave voters were older and have since died.*

Is this a serious fucking statement!!

OliviaPopeRules · 03/11/2017 22:13

increasingly looking as if Leave did not abide by electoral rules.

Oh and everyone on the remain side clearly did, what BS.

Humpsfor20yards · 03/11/2017 22:15

Haven't you heard this before? It's quite a widespread theory.

Humpsfor20yards · 03/11/2017 22:17

What are brexiteers most looking forward to post march 2019?

Humpsfor20yards · 03/11/2017 22:22

Who do you think was behind the equally corrupt remain campaign?

Sinuhe · 03/11/2017 22:22

Today's expert report says brexit will cost each family another £930 a year on their food bills - on top of the food inflation we've already seen since the brexit vote.

And the rest. We have the first "exchange rate casualties" in my field of work ... In other words redundancy as a direct result of brexit vote and the drop in EUR rate.

Humpsfor20yards · 03/11/2017 22:23

Oh well sinuhe, move on.

We are going to be able to make our own rules soon.

Sinuhe · 03/11/2017 22:29

Oh damm! I forgot that making your own rules is a real boost to the economy and everyone will have work happily ever after.

To those posters saying that both sides were as bad as each other, Remain as ‘corrupt’ as Leave: that is not what is at issue here at all. You cannot have read the news.

The allegation, as this article outlines, is that Russia funded and influenced the Leave campaign as part of their bid to destabilise Europe. If proven, this is rather more serious than the kind of generalised campaign dodginess that pp seem to think is this is about.

KennDodd · 03/11/2017 22:52

Don't worry Sinuhe you can get a job as a seasonal farm worker. I'm being made redundant as a direct result of Brexit as well.

Age (and education) are widely accepted to be the biggest predictors of voting Leave, apparently the tipping point moving from Remain to Leave is about 45 years old. I don't think this is a controversial thing to say. I saw a statistician/mathematician talking about it. He said that if nobody changed their vote, and voting pattens stayed the same, because of the age profiles of Leave/ Remain voters, Remain will be in the majority in 2019.
