To think the Brexit referendum result should be set aside if allegations of corruption are proved?

Vanity Fair article about this

Just like the US election last year, there is more and more evidence emerging now that some parts of the Leave campaign were fundedy in very shady ways. Also, social media was manipulated to feed personalised fake news to voters before the referendum. Even the ludicrous #usepens seems to have been pushed by Russian bots as a way of undermining confidence in the electoral process.

We are teetering on the brink of making the biggest political mistake of my lifetime (and I'm in my 50s and remember a good many other bad times). That's bad and bad enough, but if it wasn't even a legitimate vote surely it should just be set aside?

These are the real issues though aren't they - what actually did influence people?!

Yeah, the fact that one side is being investigated for being illegally and covertly funded by foreign interests is neither here nor there.

Hmm
NameChanger22 · 06/11/2017 12:29

There should never have been a referendum in the first place, but it happened. Now we need an other one to reverse the first and hopefully things can go back to normal.

wasonthelist · 06/11/2017 12:30

Now we need an other one to reverse the first and hopefully things can go back to normal.

Er...no - we have gone past that stage

Peregrina · 06/11/2017 13:35

We can't go back. It would be good if we tried to find out what issues caused the Referendum vote to narrowly be for Leave. This would mean understanding that people did value the NHS and want to see it properly funded.

Even the 'take back control' - is that not a sign that people felt they were not being listened to? The fact that it's Westminster, as much or more than the rest of the EU, which didn't and still doesn't listen to people, is the real problem which needs to be addressed.

As for too many immigrants - what is the solution here? The areas which voted Leave tend to have the fewest immigrants, so what exactly is that about? Those people who voted Leave in the hope that all Muslims will be kicked out are likely to be disappointed.

Figmentofmyimagination · 06/11/2017 18:07

The fact is that crucial equal pay, pregnancy and other discrimination protections do indeed emanate from EU law, as experts like Michael ford and Sean Jones were pointing out at the time to anyone who would listen.

One example is the right to claim pregnancy discrimination without the need to compare yourself to a hypothetical sick man.

There are many other examples. But the truth was too nuanced for sound-bite Britain.

MexicanBob · 06/11/2017 18:19

Let it drop. There's nothing to be gained by taking this line. I voted "Remain" btw.

NameChanger22 · 06/11/2017 18:57

There is everything to lose and nothing to gain by leaving. I don't think we should just give up on our country so easily.

MotherofPearl · 06/11/2017 19:10

@NameChanger22
I for one couldn’t agree more with what you’ve said. Ploughing ahead with this suicidal Brexit disaster seems, to me, wholly irresponsible. We need a politician with backbone and vision to get us out of this mess. Sadly, there don’t seem to be any likely candidates.

time4chocolate · 06/11/2017 20:02

@namechanger22 - At the last count there were approx 17 million people who weren’t giving up on our country. Who is the ‘we’ that you refer to?

Julie8008 · 06/11/2017 20:27

We shouldn't give up on our country and just give in to EU rule. Their are to many people in the UK that are willing and able to stand on our own 2 feet.

Why are a minority of British people so down on the UK. I really dont get it.

Vitalogy · 06/11/2017 20:36

Why are a minority of British people so down on the UK. I really dont get it. Neither do I. Lacking in confidence it seems.

Humpsfor20yards · 06/11/2017 20:58

What are you looking forward to most come March 2019?

The vote was a legitimate process. Most voters are intelligent enough to make their own mind up and dont believe everything they are told particularly from politicians. As usual anyone who voted leave was misguided and had lapped up social meida !!??. I had an essay question 30 years ago about Britain having to surrender national Sovereignty to be a full member of the EU nothing has changed there is nothing new under this sun. I did concede at the time we would have to give away sovereignty but didnt vote for it.

Vitalogy · 06/11/2017 21:44

I'd already decided which way I was voting before any of the campaigns even started.

allegretto · 06/11/2017 21:53

That's pretty insulting if you mean Remainers. Has it not occurred to you that whether you agree with them or not, Remainers believe in the future of the country - that's why it is upsetting when we see the damage being done. I know there are going to be differences in opinions on these threads but please don't suggest that it's not patriotic to want to remain. It's precusely because I want the best for my country that I don't want to leave the EU.

Humpsfor20yards · 06/11/2017 21:55

Mm, uh huh.

Julie8008 · 06/11/2017 22:18

Remainers believe in the future of the country ... please don't suggest that it's not patriotic to want to remain.

But it seems remainers are 'patriotic' for the EU. Or at best split patriotism.

Theworldisfullofidiots · 06/11/2017 22:37

Here we go again....
It seems if you voted remain you are just not patriotic 'enough' or optimistic 'enough'.
It's almost like we're doing cosmic ordering for the UK.
If we wish hard enough it'll all be OK and we shouldn't worry about pesky things like being part of a trading bloc, or human rights. Just trust in Boris and Pritti Patel.
....and look forward to the outcomes of disaster capitalism courtesy of legatum et al. Cake for all.
Forgive this old cynic.

allegretto · 06/11/2017 22:40

Julie - I am British and European. What's wrong with that? I don't have to choose sides as I don't see the EU as the enemy! That doesn't mean I don't support my country.

Vitalogy · 06/11/2017 22:45

I've never felt European.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 06/11/2017 22:47

Ive never felt European either

Or dh

Theworldisfullofidiots · 06/11/2017 22:49

Vitalogy you should try it. You don't know what you are missing.

Julie8008 · 06/11/2017 22:54

If we wish hard enough it'll all be OK
No wishing involved, we are fighting working hard for it.

I am British and European. What's wrong with that?
Nothing at all, never said there was. I also feel British and European, I just choose to support the UK above all other countries. That is what patriotism is.

allegretto · 06/11/2017 22:59

I just choose to support the UK above all other countries. Exactly. That's also the reason why I don't want Brexit as I believe it will ruin my country. Don't try and make out that Remainers are not proud of their country whether or not you agree with us!
