To think the Brexit referendum result should be set aside if allegations of corruption are proved?

Vanity Fair article about this

Just like the US election last year, there is more and more evidence emerging now that some parts of the Leave campaign were fundedy in very shady ways. Also, social media was manipulated to feed personalised fake news to voters before the referendum. Even the ludicrous #usepens seems to have been pushed by Russian bots as a way of undermining confidence in the electoral process.

We are teetering on the brink of making the biggest political mistake of my lifetime (and I'm in my 50s and remember a good many other bad times). That's bad and bad enough, but if it wasn't even a legitimate vote surely it should just be set aside?

them controlling us
I don't get this. We weren't being controlled. We were part of the decision making. Do you think we didn't contribute anything?

shhhfastasleep · 05/11/2017 19:48

How were they controlling us?

Humpsfor20yards · 05/11/2017 19:52

I remember a lot of foreign countries trying to influence the referendum

Do you have evidence that foreign countries - er which? - were secretely funding the remain campaign? Do you have evidence that they infiltrated social media?

I'm guessing you either didn't read or didn't understand the articles linked to that show Russian influence.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 05/11/2017 19:54

Yeah that wasnt fake news

Where are we in the queue now?

Im gonna guesssssss......the back

Humpsfor20yards · 05/11/2017 19:54

Julie - I don't think you know what fake news means! That was the President of the USA outlining what his country's policy would be - how is that fake news

And that. ^

Humpsfor20yards · 05/11/2017 20:01

These types of discussions are v frustrating.

That someone actually thinks Obama saying uk wouldn't be a priority is 'fake news' or even that him saying that -,is the equivalent of russia illegal interference shows how far apart our understanding of the world some of us are.

Humps - I know. It really is alarming. But don't worry someone will come along no doubt to say how it is elitist to expect people to understand this and that every opinion is valid. Sad

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 05/11/2017 20:07

baby

Leave campaign said

'Never fear chaps...the good old u s of a will be there with trade deals...we will be at the front of the queue '

And Obama said 'nope, more like the back'

I may have paraphrased

kittytom · 05/11/2017 20:07

I don't think there should have been a referendum (Hitler's preferred method of destabilisation) in the first place.

I don't think the result should be changed but I do think parliament needs to ensure it makes decisions in our interests, whatever the result. The referendum outcome has (successfully) undermined its ability to do this.

Iwanttobe8stoneagain · 05/11/2017 20:08

Yawn- and no

allegretto · 05/11/2017 20:08

Babybarrister - of course politicians are going to comment on it - why would you NOT want to know what other countries' attitude is going to be? You seem to be saying ignorance is bliss.Confused

scaryteacher · 05/11/2017 20:09

That was the President of the USA outlining what his country's policy would be It was the outgoing president, who could only dictate policy whilst POTUS. The fact he used the word 'queue' as opposed to 'line' seemed fairly indicative of a Brit hand behind that.

allegretto · 05/11/2017 20:13

It was the outgoing president who thought he would be handing on to a democrat. In any case it wasn't fake news!

I think it's a bit naive not to expect politicians to comment on politics...

Posters must be wilfully misunderstanding what the investigation and allegations are here.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 05/11/2017 20:39

Is the only explanation i can think of humps

allegretto · 05/11/2017 20:40

Sure but where does comment end and corruption start?
Shock You are joking? You do realize there is a big difference between commenting on the record and pulling strings behind the scenes?

Ilovelampandchair · 05/11/2017 20:40

In reality it was never an issue that 99.9% of the population were qualified to vote on. That dickhead calling a referendum at all was the greatest mistake of our times.

allegretto · 05/11/2017 20:43

The more I read these threads, the worse I feel. It's not just that Leavers won, it's that the whole system seems so broken.

Julie8008 · 05/11/2017 21:09

Obama was doing a 'favour' for his remain friend DC. He knew he had no authority to put the UK to the back of the queue as he would not be POTUS when it happened. So he abused his office to influence the result and spread a lie aka fake news.

Had he not intervened the leave result could have been much higher.
