To think that people that drive diesel cars know that they're killing children

Diesel cars are destroying our towns and villages. The health effects on kids are particularly bad. People must know this by now. So AIBU to think that people who drive diesel cars know that they're killing kids (and everyone really)?

It's like smoking: it's not possible to smoke in public without affecting others' health. This seems to have been accepted by most people. What makes diesel different?

Doesn't look that easy. 6 cars being charged in close proximity at peak times could cause power shortages. Lot of work to be done.

In the mean time those lucky enough to have the income and lifestyle that enable ev ownership really have no place for smugness- "glad I own an ev".

OP, I totally agree that it is a problem and noone wants to cause ourselves, our children or our fellow humans breathing difficulties. The whole revelation about diesel is relatively recent and people can't always afford to just run out and buy a new petrol or ideally hybrid/electrical car. People will switch over but like with all our environmental problems, it's not going to be resolved overnight. Even where we have effectively scrapped a substance (CFC) that was found to be destroying the ozone layer, it didn't happen overnight. You are YANBU to feel passionately about this but it's going to take time.

hiddenmnetter · 01/11/2017 20:52

Doublechocolatetiffin

I disagree there- I think the immediate future is what Mazda is working on- a petrol engine that burns fuel as efficiently as diesels currently do (around 35% efficiency compared to the current 30-odd%)

I think beyond that we'll be looking for cleaner more efficient fuels. Hydrogen fuel cells (as Toyota have developed) will come in the future. You can fill them up like a petrol car (no silly charging times) and none of the environmentally disastrous batteries. Hydrogen fuel cells just give off water vapour as their waste product. Check out the Toyota Mirai.

YorkshireCurly · 01/11/2017 20:54

Ignoring the many other environmental issues going on, what alternative do you propose to personal transport? Petrol cars are hardly lovely and fluffy. Electric cars - the electricity has to be generated somehow, and mining the raw materials for the batteries and motors is incredibly environmentally damaging. Then you have to refine and transport those materials - more damage.

I walk or cycle where i can, but with a small child it is very hard to do it all the time, particularly when both parents have to work.

I don't think that you can put this point without at some point proposing an alternative to the staus quo. I also think that it is far more complex than simply diesel is terrible.

outabout · 01/11/2017 21:48

My 30 year old diesel has hardly any plastic parts so should win on environmental sustainability as when something rusts or breaks only a small amount of new metal is required to fix it. Modern cars with evermore plastic tat and toys to play with like electric windows are simply a waste of valuable resources.
Producing electricity to charge electric vehicles is pretty inefficient and has been commented on, the infrastructure for wholesale charging in cities is not there (unless you want to turn the lights and heating off while you charge the car).

holdbackonthewine · 01/11/2017 22:42

Practically OP do you expect everyone to instantly find finance to buy a new car? Like other PPs here we bought out diesel car 8/9 years ago in part because we were told it was better for the environment than petrol. We will do the same research next time we are in a position to buy a new car.... unless you’re a scientist with your own lab you’re dependent on the available information.

The evidence of diesel impacts on health are not clear cut. OP you sound very judgmental, are we to assume that you either do not have to travel for work or are in the fortunate position of being able to purchase a new vehicle.

i have a simple answer for you OP: Its fairly simple, do fuck off.

hungryhippo90 · 01/11/2017 22:58

i really wish youd stand behind my (Diesel) car OP, the world could do with one less goady fucker.

Killing children with my car?

what a nasty thought to try and put into peoples minds you goady Pleather wearing bottle top jewellery wearing arsehole of the highest order, go crawl under an eco friendly rock.

makeourfuture · 02/11/2017 06:16

I recently visited Sheffield and found the train-to-tram system there quite easy to use and pleasant. I think light rail is great.

makeourfuture · 02/11/2017 06:24

And I think that once we open our minds to a better way, one where transport works well, we will begin to wonder what we saw in those terrible, fume-belching boxes.

Do this. Take a walk around and look at your town. What do you see? Ugly cars jammed everywhere. Why live like this?

Rebeccaslicker · 02/11/2017 06:32

Makeourfuture - not one poster has agreed with your ideas so far! Also, speak for yourself. My car is fit.

Rebeccaslicker · 02/11/2017 06:32

(Although it's not a diesel)

coconuttella · 02/11/2017 06:33

Yes, OP. I wanted a legal way of killing kids and was delighted when I realised the opportunities to do this provided by a diesel car! And it seems there are millions like me, gleefully poisoning our youth while cackling down our sleeves. Hmm

Seriously, this is the most OTT OP I’ve read in a long time!

IroningMountain · 02/11/2017 06:37

We don't all live in cities. Some of us think ourselves lucky if we get a bus once an hour or even a bus turning up at all.

Eventually we'll probably all be going round in driverless cars we don't own at all but request on an app. Op will have no call to put her judge pants on as few of us will be owners.

They'll still need some kind of fuel though.

MaisyPops · 02/11/2017 06:39

Would i like more cleaner, environeemntally friendly energy and fuel? Yes.

Do I Hmm at people who start threads sayinh 'these people kill children!' Yes.

The gasses by all petrol and diesel cars are an issue but they are an issur for everyone. Trying to go for shock factor as if somehow people either don't realise gasses are an issue or they just love the idea of dead children is silly.

I drive a diesel. I drive less than many other people with petrol cars. I take 2 short haul flights a year. It's all part of a lifestyle thing.

How many of these 'nasty car' campaigners love to go to America on holiday? Or to South east Asia to 'find themselves'? Or are they like one of our vegan friends who tried to argue thay she is better for the environment by being vegan (who drove regularly!) than DH who didn't have a car and walked/cycled to work. Grin

makeourfuture · 02/11/2017 06:42

not one poster has agreed with your ideas so far!

Who can disagree with clean air?
Who can disagree with excercise and wholesome activity?
Quiet, comfortable, energy-efficient housing?
A renewed sense of community?

Standingcat · 02/11/2017 06:43

The emissions on my car are really low and the fuel consumption is the best I have ever had. It’s a diesel

makeourfuture · 02/11/2017 06:44

We can make our future.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 02/11/2017 06:49

What is a "wholesome acrivity"?

If it's what I think it is then I disagree.

coconuttella · 02/11/2017 07:00

Who can disagree with clean air?
Who can disagree with excercise and wholesome activity? Quiet, comfortable, energy-efficient housing? A renewed sense of community?

Of course most people will agree with these aims... they are just not convinced that your plans are remotely possible. Also, your plans seem to involve the re-engineering of the whole country in these utopian people hubs/communes.... Wouldnt the energy consumption and cost needed to realise this be utterly gargantuan!

MaisyPops · 02/11/2017 07:03

Who can disagree with clean air?
Wanting to work towards improving renewable energy and clean air is different from the OP going 'omg people with diesel cars are essentially murdering children!'
Who can disagree with excercise and wholesome activity?
Again. Are you suggesting yhay my need to drive 45 mins to work prevents me exercisinh? That if I change my car I'll suddenly do lots if approved 'wholesome' activities? I mean, gosh how do I manage to do exercise and hobbies now with a diesel parked on my drive?
Quiet, comfortable, energy-efficient housing?
I'd like that. Not sure how it links to thr OP's ridiculous GF post about killing children
A renewed sense of community?
So people feel all warm and fuzzy suddenly because people don't drive a diesel car? That makes totalnsense?

Your entire thing feels naively simplistic.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 02/11/2017 07:04

DieselKiller you are ignoring many of the points people here are making and not answering g questions s.

You are being deliberately goady and sanctimonious.

I am now well aware of statistics about diesel. I wasn't when I bought my (10 year old) diesel I can't afford to replace oit, it's only done 70k so I suspect I'll be driving it for a lot longer. I live rurally so cant use public transport because there isn't any for where I need to get to.

Are you aware of the link between flying and climate change? I would hope so given how perfectly green you'd like everyone to be. Can you tell me how many flights you've taken in the last 10 years? And how you offset your carbon footprint t? Can you tell me whether you drive a car, what car you drive and your annual mileage? I'd you're not prepared to do that then why should we engage with you?

MaisyPops · 02/11/2017 07:10

You are being deliberately goady and sanctimonious.
Of course they are. This will be another Daily Mail thread in the making.

OP probably won't answer your questions either because people like that love to spout scaremongering stuff they've read on the internet but haven't the sense to think about questions like you've asked before preaching at people.
