It's shocking isn't it. I'm glad that society is more accepting of individuals who decide to have a sex change after years of therapy and soul searching but if this is the cost then it is too high. It's not just the medical profession that are to blame though, parents are too quick to pass on the responsibility for emotionally caring for their children onto health professionals, schools and sometimes, their children's peers.

Exactly what I've been thinking. I spent my childhood feeling like I was a boy in a girl's body. I'm now a very happy woman and today's approach to gender and reassignment would have done me so much harm.

It's mad! I think the world has gone absolute bonkers! These things shouldn't be readily available! It should be difficult so people consider it properly.

Within the first 50 replies, it'll start talking about toilets and sports.

Someone'll have a different view and be called a "s/he" or 'MRA".

Male violence will come into it, tenuously linked from trans people in prisons.

Within 100 replies, there'll be a couple of comments about it being mtf not ftm transsexuals wanting "access to women"

It's such a sensitive topic and arouses such strong feelings on all sides. I heard a researcher interviewed on the Today programme who wanted to run a study looking at the topic, how many people are happy or regret the decisions made ( whether to change or not change). Anyway, his funding was withdrawn because the university came under pressure. If people can't even carry out research there can't possibly be a rational debate.

I can’t see how a person of 14 can be utterly sure of who they want to be for the rest of their life. At that age I was desperately ‘in love’ with my then boyfriend and thought I had my whole life mapped out. A year later and my axis had shifted massively and my ‘wants’ continued to change pretty much with the season. There is no way that at such a young age I was capable of making rationally thought out decisions that would positively effect the rest of my life.

YANBU. We should be encouraging our kids to accept who they are, not encouraging them to change sex. If an adult chooses to undergo the procedure after many months of counselling and medical consults, that is their choice, but there's no way we should be encouraging teens to do the same.

And, and I'm aware that some will slam me for saying this, but I don't believe sex is a changeable body characteristic. If you're born with a penis you're a male, and if you're born with a vagina you're a female. Except in very rare medical cases (like hermaphrodites) is there really a 'choice' in the issue.
