I'll start.

Don't buy venetian blinds. They're such a pain to clean.

Yup. You were right mum ( as I cough up a dust cloud and they still look grubby...)

That there will come a stage when you really don't give a shit about keeping up to date with all of the latest whatever's;
i.e Technology
Music
Celeb gossip
Fashion trends

I'm only 28 now and I'm still sorta up to date with most things in general, however I do notice myself starting to fall behind when I don't have a clue who some celebs are that my teen sisters are obsessed with or when I'm raving over a new artist and they're telling me it's been on their playlist for months.

Also whilst I like new technology still, I do find myself not being bothered about upgrading my phone now contract is ending after 2 years, but previously even just a year into a contract and I felt like my phone was out of date Grin

Everything, she's a wise woman my mum. She's also wise enough to know there were things I needed to learn by making my own mistakes so I don't even get 'I told you so'. She's awesome Smile

That teenage girls who were fans of pop groups/music (60s/70s) were being exploited by pop magazines, DJs etc. (I suspect she had heard things about Jimmy Savile too). That young teenage girls shouldn't be allowed too much freedom to go places without their parents knowing where they were and who they were with.

I can't think of anything.

The things she taught me:

  1. Always respect men. They always know more than women.
  2. Sex is to be endured.
  3. Don't study at school , an education is wasted on women.
  4. Don't speak up. People will think you are rude.
  5. Always be submissive. Being nice always wins out.

"You are the prettiest girl in the world and you can do anything you want."

I was 23 before I realised the first part wasn't true!

She helped me become confident:
"Feel the fear and do it anyway"
"Fake it til you make it"
"Try, try and try again" (8 goes to pass driving test)

And to be kind:
"Jesus loved the unlovely so you must too"

It's worth spending money getting decent shoes.
Never wear anyone else's shoes.
Don't let children wear shoes until they are walking properly and never put babies in shoes.
Everyone should be barefoot as much as possible - children and adults both.

My mum is a podiatrist. Did you guess?

She told me that she never truly grew up until she lost her own Mum (she was in her 50s at the time when Grannie died) and that one day I’d understand.

She was right, I miss her more than I could ever explain.

Don't dwell on things - she's a big fan of moving swiftly on which sometimes can be bad, but is good at times - learning when to move on

Stand your ground - I can be shy but when it matters, I can stick up for myself

Take pride in your appearance - makes me feel so much better

Just RELAX - sometimes you need to just sit down and do something for you, and not worry about other boring jobs

Pick a man whose faults you can live with, because they all have faults and they don't change.

About the only thing she was right about though, apart from vests, but incredibly important!

That the trouble with common sense is that it isnt common enough.

What you think you say, what you actually say and what the other person hears can easily be 3 different things.

Reading all the "miss my mom" comments is really sad and my deapest sympathies to all of you

My lovely mom was diagnosed with cancer this week; we are really close and it's given me a horrible reminder that I won't be able to talk to her/ rely on her and get her advice for ever Sad

That I wasn't suitable to marry into the royal family and become a princess Grin Good job too, on reflection; the Queen can breathe a huge sigh of relief .....
