AIBU?

To just not 'get' Disney

Sure I agree that films are nice and mostly watchable but I don’t get the urge to visit the theme parks/ wear Disney clothes or get excited at the idea of the Disney shop?

The idea of spending a holiday in a Disney themed amusement park just gives me chills.

Watching the films or taking kids to disney land are fine. Even thd odd bit of cute merchendise is fair enough.

What I don't get is adults who are obsessed with it and tinkerbell etc. It goes under the same category to me as adults who get obsessed about mermaids or unicorns or whatever other make believe creature is suddenly cool to be obsessed with.

ooh, I bloody love Disney.
I was a rather bookish child, who grew into a slightly po-faced, Goth-ish teen, and I pooh-poohed Disney when growing up. I am now making up for lost time.

Lots of the films are wonderful - well-crafted, funny, and with amazing music. I went to Disneyland Paris a couple of years ago and the attention to detail and mis en scene at each ride really draws you in. Am now hoping to go to Disneyland in California in a couple of years time.

And I do wish I'd bought more Nightmare Before Christmas and Monsters University merchandise at the DLP shop, as they're sadly under-represented at the Disney Store.

I'll never forgive Disney for what they did to Winnie the Pooh...

Ditto.

Theme parks are a bit marmite. I am not keen on the heat, the walking, the crowds and queuing, and people dressed up as characters give me the creeps so I give them a swerve. Obviously I wouldn't spend 11 hours on a plane to get to one.

But people love it. If that's what floats your boat then great. As long as I don't have to go.

I detest the crowds but I love It's A Small World and the simple rides like the train that goes round Disneyland Paris. It's suspending reality for a short while and that's a good thing. And I really needed the hug I got from Tigger! I don't care that it was probably some sweaty teenager, at that moment it was Tigger.

Why any adult would want to waste a holiday queing to get on a ride at disney world is beyond me! I recently went to Japan and everyone was asking me if I went to disney world there. Why on earth would anyone fly 12 hours to Japan to go to bloody disneyland! Like there aren't better things to do there 😂 Adults who like disney are nuts 😂

Another very good way of putting it. Grin

I've been to DLP 5 times and never queue more than 10 mins for anything! It's not all about the rides.

I relate Disney to child like joy. I have wonderful memories of watching the films with friends and family and visiting Disney allows you to experience fun in a completely innocent setting. It symbolises fun to me, but appreciate not everyone will feel the same

Why on Earth do people have "to get" what other harmless activities other adults enjoy.

As long as you're not being forced to participate where's the harm.

I do think there's an innate snobbery about Disney. That people are far too adult and have much more exciting hobbies and personalities. All very banal to care that much what others do.

I didn't say I care.
I said I don't get it, which I don't.

Just like I don't get people being all 'i love unicorns' when they are 29 year old women. Great if that floats their boat, but I don't get it

What does being a 29 year old woman have to do with liking unicorns?

JacquesHammer
Not snobby.
I enjou some disney films and even have some whinnie the pooh pyjamas.
I wouldn't choose to go to the parks but meh if people want to then fine.

What i don't get is the sheer silly levels of obsession that people get over it.
'I enjoy it' - fine
'omg there's a new film and now I need to buy all thr t shirts that turn uo and sing all the songs every 5 seconds' - just seems odd to me

But then I feel the same way about harry potter obsessives etc too. I love harry potter, but don't get adults who are obsessed.

professor
Because in my experience there is a certain type of adult who instead of thinking 'that's nice' get hyped up and act in such a babyish way over things like glitter, unicorns, mermaids, princesses etc.

All feels a bit infantilised to me.

Enjoy what you like but save the childish behaviour gor children.

I don’t get it either. Thought I was the only one! Friend of mine went with her partner for a weeks break to Disney Florida and spent the best part of 10K on the holiday Shock. She’s on about going next year when her Baby will be about 6 months....
I don’t really like the films, but find it odd when perfectly rational adults want all the merchandise. If kids love it that’s fine, I just don’t get why adults want tops with Micky mouse emblazoned across it.

Oh my god, they KILLED the charm of Winnie the Pooh. Killed it stone dead.

I haven't seen a huge swathe of Disney films, certainly nothing past about 1954 Grin

I did go to DLP when i was 22 with 3 friends, cost us £14 for overnight hotel and 1 day entrance. It was shite. The highlight was the Planet Hollywood restaurant which had the scary evil-bat-type costume from Coppola's Dracula.

I hated UP. There, you can shoot me now.

Report
Sparklingbrook · 24/10/2017 09:08

UP was the weirdest film. I couldn't make it to the end of Frozen.

Is it Disney that have completed violated Peter Rabbit now?

As does cooing over shoes with red soles or a bag with someone's name on it does to me, but each to their own.

@JaquesHammer I have a Harry Potter tattoo too. And robes Grin Some of the adult Harry Potter fans I've met are the nicest people I've ever come across.

I think people are very sneery about Disney and it's one of those things that are felt to be SO silly and childish that it's fine to be like that about it and openly ridicule people who like it, especially on MN. I love Disney, I am a sensible, clued up, extensively travelled woman in my forties but some of my very best times are Disney related. You don't have to like it but it's as reasonable to like it as it is to have any other interest.
