To just not 'get' Disney

MissRabbitNeedsaSpaDay · 23/10/2017 21:35

Sure I agree that films are nice and mostly watchable but I don’t get the urge to visit the theme parks/ wear Disney clothes or get excited at the idea of the Disney shop?

The idea of spending a holiday in a Disney themed amusement park just gives me chills.

What ???? I Luuuuuuurrrrrvvvvee. Disney.... ❤️ Been several times with my sons now grown up. I love the whole glittery experience!!! Each to their own ! 😊

SuperBeagle · 23/10/2017 21:49

OTOH, our household doesn't really get Harry Potter tbh.

Well, that's just not acceptable.

We don't get HP either. 😬

autumnintheair · 23/10/2017 21:52

I don't understand the angst over Disney or why some people are really against it. It just doesn't matter that much in our house. There are brilliant Disney films, and brilliant films from other studios for children.
Same with dress up costumes, modern Disney Princess are of their time, and I have never been to Disney parks but hope to go for a bit soon. Disney has a place.

littlemisscomper · 23/10/2017 21:53

Candymelts, a friend of mine had a Disney song for the first dance at her wedding. The worst thing was it was 'Beauty and the Beast'...!

BakedBeans47 · 23/10/2017 21:54

I don’t mind it and have been to DLP and would like to go to the parks in Florida too but I don’t really get grown adults who are obsessed by Disney

We're a Disney family. I defy anyone to watch Moana and not love the entire thing; the Maui rap alone should be considered Best Song Since Raspberry Beret. Kiss The Girl and Under the Sea are the songs of my childhood.

Plus, Disney does a good tear-jerker. Nothing more beautiful than the silent scenes during the first 15 minutes of UP. Nothing on earth.

Disney is whimsy. It's innocence. It's my 12 year old still being excited to cross the channel and watch the parades each Easter. It's my 6 year old taking his Remy the Rat toy on every holiday he's ever been on. It's an intrinsic part of their childhood. It's not for everyone, it's not for you. But to hate it is odd. Let it go.

Taffeta · 23/10/2017 21:57

YANBU. I caved and took DD for a day trip to Disney Paris when we went to Paris for a long weekend.

We queued for AN HOUR for her to have a cuddle with Thumper. Ok, she was 9, fair enough.

Most of the queue, however, were adults. On their own. Without children. Getting excited queuing up for an hour to have a cuddle with some random wearing a sweaty rabbit outfit. What the actual fuck?

Clitoria · 23/10/2017 21:58

Me neither OP, and I've been to Disney theme park twice.

It's a certain type of adult who is obsessed with Disney stuff (not due to their kid, like, personally obsessed with Disney of their own volition), they probably find Michael McIntyre (?) amusing and get really into X factor.
The theme parks have been marketed to be a 'once in a lifetime' life experience that parents ought to aspire to.

Crispsheets · 23/10/2017 21:58

No , Harry Potter free zone here too

I love Disney/Orlando world, I think for my family
It's the perfect holiday. We all love rides, water parks and fireworks. There's nowhere else we can go where we have non stop fun like it, obviously we do holiday elsewhere too but Disney is our favourite!

We don't really buy merchandise though so a Disney shop doesn't excite me though.

LemonShark · 23/10/2017 22:04

100% agree. Being 'obsessed' with Disney/Pooh has always struck me as a bit of a placeholder for an actual personality. ducks

Headofthehive55 · 23/10/2017 22:04

No I don't get it either. I went as a 21 year old and regretted spending the time and money going. It's a theme park. Would rather go to Yellowstone, or Norway.
Fortunately when I ask my kids if they are interested all I get is meh.
But I feel other parents expect me to take them

Cantstanddisney · 23/10/2017 22:04

😂😂😂 I’ve always found the whole thing too sickly sweet ant though I was vastly in the minority.......as my user name suggests!!!

I’ve found “my people” 😂

Dixiechickonhols · 23/10/2017 22:05

Each to their own.
I didn't grow up with Disney films, teddies etc. First time I went was when Dd was almost 2. She was born with a disability and then i'd developed life threatening health condition. I loved it - the parades, fireworks, watching DD plus the customer service. For me it is my happy place and we have been back to Florida many times. Each time very much a I've made it, i'm still alive moment and thankful I could. The Disney hotels are excellent as is the food - some fantastic high end restaurants it's certainly not all burgers and chips. A chance to live in a nice bubble for a short while. I enjoy Universal but Disney has the magic for me. I'm not a crying sort but I do tear up during wishes fireworks or lion king show. I cried at disney on ice last week DD asked why I was teary, the little girls dancing in frozen dresses so happy reminded me of her when she was younger, the music, reminded me of happy family holidays.

That's got to be a reportable offence.

Maybe they are those people that get off on the furry animal things. I only learnt about this on MN. I think they are called Furries? I'm not googling to check though.

Single alone adults queuing to cuddle Thumper is not right. Not right.

44PumpLane · 23/10/2017 22:06

YANBU to feel that way, and I say that as a complete Disney nut!

You don't have to "get" it, it's not mandatory.

Personally I love it! Love the films, love the music, love the theme parks. My husband and I honesymooned for 3 weeks (no kids) in Florida. We had previously been to Florida for 2 weeks a couple years previous.
I have also been with a pal of mine and am going next year with the same pal and I'm leaving my babies behind.

No I'd don't enjoy Michael McIntyre or X Factor! Grin

To be honest I'd rather you didn't "get" it. One less person in the queue for Solash Mountain!

44PumpLane · 23/10/2017 22:06

*Splash!

Sparklingbrook · 23/10/2017 22:07

I went to Disneyland in about 1990 and I have no desire to return. I am still all Disneyed out.

Knotts Berry Farm was Snoopy themed and I like that better. Grin

Orangebird69 · 23/10/2017 22:07

Yanbu. My Mil is fucking potty a bit Disney.
My 2yo ds has no idea what Disney is Go Jetters is life.

I do intend to take him to Universal when he's big enough for the rides.

Tabsicle · 23/10/2017 22:07

I don't get the link. I do like Disney (never been to the theme park, but I would quite like to at some point, enjoy the movies, no Disney clothes but have Nightmare Before Xmas bed linen which I love) but I've never even seen Michael McIntyre and don't watch X Factor.

Sugarcoma · 23/10/2017 22:08

It’s only in Europe that Disney is viewed as either a corporate imperialist or being “for children”. In America, especially California, it’s part of the culture and v normal for adults/older teens to go the park for date nights, uni trips etc. Japan is the same.

(Yup - have I blown your mind? There’s a Disneyland in Tokyo (and it’s the best theme park in the world). Tokyo is also home to the first adult Disney Store.)

So put your judgy pants away.
