AIBU?

To just not 'get' Disney

Sure I agree that films are nice and mostly watchable but I don’t get the urge to visit the theme parks/ wear Disney clothes or get excited at the idea of the Disney shop?

The idea of spending a holiday in a Disney themed amusement park just gives me chills.

Let it go.

TittyGolightly That wasn't even intentional!

I'm with you op. Never even as a child wanted to go to Disneyland. Seems an exhausting trip. But you are on the wrong side of popular opinion......

I've managed to avoid Disney mostly as an adult. I liked some of the films when I was a child. DCs not that fussed which suits me just fine! I couldn't face a trip to Disneyland- too many people, queues, ffaff.

DisneyWorld in Florida is the number 1 domestic honeymoon destination for newlyweds in USA. Lots of people travel there without children.

Dh and i are honeymooning in florida without kids, split between disney and universal studios. I don't like michael macintyre or the x factor, nor do I like shopping, sunbathing, or laying by a pool- that is not my idea of a holiday.

You know what I do love though? Roller costers and food.

I quite like the Harry Potter books they’re a nice kids’ yarn. We did raise our eyebrows at the adults dressed in Hogwarts uniforms at the HP studios though.

Dressed up as adult characters I could have got on board with. But a 6ft 4 man, 18 st man dressed up as Harry Potter did make us pause for a second. Bless his heart.

Sugarcoma, if I were lucky enough to make it to Tokyo with kids (or without, actually) I would be driving straight past Disney to the Ghibli theme park!

I felt the same, but I visited Euro Disney a few months back as my DD Dance school was performing there. As i entered the parks I was so cynical, saying to my partner that the constant Disney music being pumped through the speakers was enough to give you a break down..... a few hours in I was wearing a fabulous pair of sequinned Minnie ears and loving it! Even the queues didn’t put me off! So much so that I’m taking DD back the week before Christmas. We’re not telling her, just going to wake her up in the morning and whisk her off. I can’t wait !

I've always found Disney slightly sinister, I don't know why. Not so much the individual films/characters, but more the whole corporate compulsory-happiness thing.

I'll never forgive Disney for what they did to Winnie the Pooh...

I defy anyone to watch Moana and not love the entire thing

Noooo! Really? I thought it was, well, a bit dull and repetitive. We're all different though!

I'm always suspicious that Disney plants subliminal "buy our merchandise" message in between the frames. And I genuinely don't get the "magic" people talk about. But then a lot of people don't like the things I like, so hey ho!

YADNBU. I didn't have any desire to go to Disneyland as a child, I have even less now.

Thank god it's not just me!! I dislike the whole concept, but then I dislike all theme parks - it's the corporate manipulation which bugs me

Each to their own of course, but it also makes me sad when kids get taken to somewhere wonderful like Florida, California or Paris and see practically nothing of them; it just seems such a shame to go all that way and experience little other than some plastic pal

Nostalgia, memories, pretending you still believe in the magic.
Also themeparks have rollercoasters and parades and loads of fun, lighthearted escapism.

Life would be really dull if we all liked the same things.

I'm not into Disney films or any kind of merchandise, but I love Disneyworld.

Is it just england that Disney is seen as some sort of quasi religious experience? In California the californians we met saw it as just another theme park on a par with knotts berry - nice place for the kids but no more. Back in England have seen mothers well up with emotion on recounting their visit and the faint insinuation your kids are deprived if not taken.

Was fun but agree the sight of single men queueing to hug the characters was disturbing. My 8 year old found it odd.

YANBU, I don't get it either. I don't even particularly like the films. But hey, whatever floats people's boats.

Disneyland is fab. It's about having fun on rides.
Not much different to alton towers and the like! [

There are a lot of things I don't "get". Handbags, spending more than £50 on shoes, football, most other sports, alcohol, kale, Cath Kidston.

However, people like different things and I wouldn't judge them as I wouldn't expect to be judged myself for my interests.

I love Disney and Harry Potter and have been known to dress up. I had a themed wedding. I love Xbox games. I'm a professor with a high level education job and have taught for 15 years. I'm allowed to like the things I like.

LittleCar Do both! Ghibli not opening until 2020 (probably to capitalize on the fact they’re hosting the Olympics that summer).**

And be sure to check out Sanrio Purloland, aka Hello Kittyland (which is where my DH drew the line.* He went with me once but said he’s never going back).*

Seriously though Tokyo Disneyland makes even Disneyworld Florida looks like Butlins.* It’s like stepping into a Disney movie.*

That's a very good way of putting it!
