just come home and saw the most unbelivable thing! car with 4 kids in the back off it 1 passagenger in the front on her lap HOLDING on to the car seat that had a young baby in it .!!!!

the baby had no seat belt round it so it would have been seriously hurt if there had been a crash and as for the kids in the back not one of them had a bloody seat belt on.

thought it was law now that any child under 11 had to be in a boster seat and straped in???

Yeah it does. Some things are sensible and some are ridiculas.

nearlythere · 12/04/2007 17:00

god all this back in the good ole days stuff is going to tickle my mil- she was shocked by a pram that turned into a pushchair- ahhh bless!!!!

3andnomore · 12/04/2007 17:03

oh and nearly...you know you are setting yourself up for some more abuse, right here, yeah, lol!
I am so with you though, there are things one can sav eon, and others...not worht it's savings...!
Albeit admittedly, my ms is right now in the cheapest car seat I have ever owned , but it was hihgly recommended to me (Britax Hi-Liner).

Ad kks, glad it did make some sense, lol!

nearlythere · 12/04/2007 17:04

3andnomore -bog off!! the prams are my obsessional hobby- they create a happy home and cause amusement (the xplory) and awe (sc balmoral) whenever i take them out!

still- maybe something to think about in the future once the mortgage, business loans, credit card etc are all paid!!!! lol

wasn't really a major gripe just wondered if perhaps i was being a bit silly to get annoyed about it- think twas blown out of proportion!

nearlythere · 12/04/2007 17:07

3andnomore- cheap still means it is up to standards which a second hand (even a new model!!) may not be!

I'm all for buying new seats even if they have to be cheap ones because of a budget, safer that way- just don't start me on travel systems- having enough problems with one stalker- can't face another thread like that!!!

kks · 12/04/2007 17:07

They don't let you out of the maternity unit without you baby in a carseat, well didn't let us.

3andnomore · 12/04/2007 17:07

yeah..just a tad...but must have misunderstood, I thought I read that you owe a BAbyshop, etc...hm....confused .com here i come...doesn't take much to confuse me, lol!

kks · 12/04/2007 17:08

Who owns a babyshop?

nearlythere · 12/04/2007 17:09

diff units, diff rules- its the decision of the health trust!

bugger me, didn't realise what the time was! off home to my sparkling bunch of lovely children! well home to cook tea for the brady bunch anyway!!

chocolattegirl · 12/04/2007 17:10

It doesn't surprise me at all - there's quite a few people who drive like that around here. How many people actually get their car seats fitted into the car it will be used in properly and checked by a qualified professional or just buy any old seat from Argos and bung it in?

I was unable to get an appropriate toddler seat for my DD when I had a Citroen car - the seatbelt webbing in the back was too long and the buckles did not lie flat against the seat as is strongly recommended. So a seat was fitted into my Dad's car instead and he was roped into to ferry us places (luckily he is retired and had the time/inclination to do this sort of thing). Otherwise it would have been walking everywhere for me .

nearlythere · 12/04/2007 17:10

just to claify as i run through the door- i do run the babyshops, but also have a myriad of personal prams (a collection which the V&A would be proud of to be fair!!)

3andnomore · 12/04/2007 17:11

rofl....well travelsystems are my absolute pet-hate...I could rant with ya on that one...I truely don't get them or the need..I really don't, lol!Well , I had 3 Kids and never needed one...that is all I need to know

MUst admit, I have given all my old carseats away , either friends, or my Britax Firstclass went over Freecycle...but, if they had been involved in an accident, they would have been binned, there and then...

kks · 12/04/2007 17:11

I have to buy a new seat soon, one that faces forward in the back of the car. My babe has to be 20ib though, shes nearly there.

3andnomore · 12/04/2007 17:12

nealry...get it now, lol! So, hadn't got it wrong..only the E-mail stalker wanted you to give away your own Prams...yes???

3andnomore · 12/04/2007 17:14

kks, I had a Britax Firstclass for ys and ms (and wiht es I had the club class, which was similar of sorts) and that is a seat where they can sit longer rearfacing, and it cna also be turned forward facing and can be used till about 4years of age...so it's a group 0/1 carseat....it's an marvellous seat, imo

chocolattegirl · 12/04/2007 17:22

I forget what my DD had for her toddler seat now. Her current seat is a Britax and will take her up to about age 9-10 when she can probably come out of booster seats entirely if she's tall enough.

nearlythere · 13/04/2007 10:05

3andnomore- yep!!! they think i am self centred and selfish because i work damn hard to buy lovely prams!!

kks, the britax ones are lovely seats, but i have to reccomend the fisher price ones at the moment too! not a great fan of maxi cosi, but nania ones are great for anyone on a budget, if you want to blow the budget the recaro ones are beautiful, or the silver cross explorer looks really comfy

kslatts · 13/04/2007 10:54

That is shocking, I hate it when I see children not wearing their seatbelts.

Rachmumoftwo · 13/04/2007 10:57

I have seen similar and find it very upsetting. I know I am a little overprotective of my two- oK a lot- but still, better safe than sorry.

nappyaddict · 04/05/2007 15:34

kks if you have a car seat why do you sometimes let the baby on your lap. am i being thick here?

dmo · 04/05/2007 19:49

my mum dropped my niece off before for the night and said she had forgotten her coat and that she would nip back with it i asked her where the car seat is and she said she had fogotten that too she just puts her on the seat with covers niece is 12mths old with cp and is blind i just cant believe it i really cant
my boys nearly 10 and 11 have booster seats all the time even thought they dont really need them, it really saddens me careless people

SleeplessInTheStaceym11House · 04/05/2007 20:18

that is appaling, poor kids!

i get more and more angry at people like this! a couple of weeks ago i saw a mum in a petrol station put her kid in the back of the car, where there was a car seat, the child didnt sit in it and didnt ! i was completely why bother having one if your not even gunna put the child in it???

i really feel sorry for the children as they know no different!

Ripeberry · 04/05/2007 21:52

At my DD1 primary school there is a woman who drives a large saloon car which only has 5 seats and she collects 7 kids of various ages from 5 up to 9yrs old and i kid you not, she has 5 of them cramed into the back seat, one in the front seat and the smallest in the footwell!
What really, really pisses me off, is that the youngest is my DD1's best friend and he is regularly seen standing up between the seats.
Ok, it may only be a journey of 2 miles but the road is quite fast and twisty BUT all it takes is for a quick brake and that poor boy will be out of that windscreen.
I've spoken to the mother about it and she says she does the school run in the morning and she has a PEOPLE CARRIER for goodness sake, why can't her friend walk down the road and borrow it, instead of using the saloon??
I've offered to take him in my car (we all live on same estate) but he wants to be with his brothers and sisters.
What can you do?
AB

Furrymummy · 04/05/2007 22:38

Hmm, I guess she didn't hear about that awful crash last year where there was a woman with 7 boys ina Citroën Xsara Picasso (which seats 5), 3 of the boys were killed when she lost contol of her car in Lane 3 of the M1, thrown out of the car.
Couple of years ago I was appauled to see a two year ols stood up in the back of the car in front hanging on to the back of the driver's seat. Just can't believe how utterly unthinking of kids lives people can be...

nappyaddict · 05/05/2007 13:06

i went to isle of wight a couple of yrs ago with my cousin who had a 4 year old and 2 year old twins. she frequently let one of them ride on her lap for the 2 mile trip from the beach to the campsite. i didn't agree with this especially as they have a 7 seater!
