MIL is a lovely women really, but positively enjoys being frugal and detests any excess in all its forms.

She's baked us a lovely cake, but is determined for it to last for as long as possible. She is the master slice cutter and won't let anyone else near it.

AIBU to be a bit disappointed with the size of this slice?

(Everyone disappeared into the other room, so I was able to take this sneaky photo with handy scale provided by new pound coin!)

Oh yes xmas dinner at my Aunts. 8 people, 8 small jackets, 8 tiny portions of each thing. Didn't like something, even less on your plate. I cried I was so hungry on the way home. They are loaded. Thing is both my aunt and my mum are so uneducated about modern food they make really poor choices for buffets and serve spicy indian food with spicy mexican dips and there is not enough food on the table to ignore these mistakes.

Zaphodsotherhead · 22/10/2017 17:15

Blimey! One very deep inward breath and I'd have sucked that half way down my throat!

notnowthough · 22/10/2017 17:23

We have a frugal family member who infamously once invited extended family for boxing day lunch/dinner and cut an individual (not one of the really tiny ones you can eat in one bite but the next size up) pork pie into SIXTEEN pieces as the centrepiece of a one lettuce leaf, slice of tomato, 3 slices of cucumber salad, half a piece of bread and butter salad. She is the only person on the planet who does not think that was stingy and has wondered ever since why no-one goes to hers for Christmas. BTW it definitely wasn't because she couldn't afford to be (a lot) more generous.

Laiste · 22/10/2017 17:32

God i had the mother of all miserable boxing days at my DMs a few years ago. Don't know why i agreed to it. She lives alone, is well off, but won't heat more than one room at a time and prepares meals for everyone else as if they are a bird - all the while banging on about how she herself hardly eats at all. Which i know is bull shit because i do her weekly shop! Hmm

UnicornRainbowColours · 22/10/2017 17:35

That be spot on for me but I am not a big cake scoffer

RoganJosh · 22/10/2017 17:42

Those says by we've lost sight of normal portions, here's a 1949/50s cake slice. Looks about double the one being discussed?

'Says by' should be 'saying'

gamerchick · 22/10/2017 17:55

Yes but back in those days people didn’t expect a whole chicken breast to themselves and grumble there wasn’t more meat.

Suchacliche · 22/10/2017 18:10

My mil would make that slice of cake feed 4 people!

ownedbySWD · 22/10/2017 18:18

Poss smaller cake tins?

RoganJosh · 22/10/2017 18:37

Ha, maybe!

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 22/10/2017 18:49

Have a look at this handy guide, OP. Tricksy MIL has bamboozled you into accepting the 'Not hungry at all but want to taste the cake' slice size!

And then just look at the 'recent breakup' slice allowance - frankly, it's almost worth saying ta-ta to the whole lot of them for!!

gamerchick Chicken breasts vary greatly in size, and nobody ever got A whole chicken breast, it was sliced up. Some white meat and some brown?
As an adult if I want to loose weight I just go and stay with my Mum. Yet somehow with all her superior knowledge she always has been and always will be overweight.

gamerchick · 22/10/2017 19:07

Have to admit SC what you describe sounds grim as fuck.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 22/10/2017 19:08

That has gone straight onto my Pinterest board Crowd along with the other 20,000 items I rarely look at but want to have at my fingertips

Yep this is just what I'd get along with a discussion over my weight 🙄. She'd then go on about food guilt for a while 🙄

mrsamerican · 23/10/2017 17:29

Man the "My MIL is the worst" club is grasping straws and yet again I thank my lucky stars. My MIL is so awesome she never makes less than 3 puddings/cakes if there are four adults at her house. I never go home without food amd she regularly drops by with half a cake she and FiL cannot finish.

I think you need to get a grip

elfycat · 23/10/2017 17:35

I've just checked with my 6 year old. She says it's too small for her and she'd be really sad if I gave it to her.

She's slender and eats like a horse. She runs around a lot though. I think she was a Spaniel in a previous life.

SosSam · 23/10/2017 17:36

Are you sure it wasn't a sample just to make sure it was still good to eat, like a waiter does with a good wine?
If not, I would have pretended it was and scoffed it in one and said 'yeah it's still good' I'll have a slice 😜

Tazmum01 · 23/10/2017 17:38

If I'd been handed that, I'd take the plate, put it back down and pick up the one with the actual cake on!! Wink, say "thanks babe" and mince away to the sofa with my serving spoon.

Cookie37 · 23/10/2017 17:39

Oh dear ! Ask for a big bit next time ! Does she let you have seconds ??

Mumto2two · 23/10/2017 17:49

Think that's what you'd call a slither, not a slice CakeSmile
