Is MIL's slice of cake a bit stingy? (Picture)

MIL is a lovely women really, but positively enjoys being frugal and detests any excess in all its forms.

She's baked us a lovely cake, but is determined for it to last for as long as possible. She is the master slice cutter and won't let anyone else near it.

AIBU to be a bit disappointed with the size of this slice?

(Everyone disappeared into the other room, so I was able to take this sneaky photo with handy scale provided by new pound coin!)

That's a miserable excuse for a slice of cake! YANBU

Alpacaandgo · 23/10/2017 19:21

Cracking up! I mean if you're gonna have cake you've gotta have a decent piece! Ask for seconds because its so delicious!

lolalola19 · 23/10/2017 19:22

You should ask for at least another 3 of that size!

Gbtch · 23/10/2017 19:34

Noooo! That's the bit you leave for Mr Manners when you all disappear into another room to demolish the rest!

Catsize · 23/10/2017 19:37

Looks okay to me.

thelastredwinegum · 23/10/2017 19:38

This is why you have to ask for 'minutes' of any circular dessert that has to be shared, I usually have about 10-12 minutes of a standard sized pudding from the freezer section of the supermarket for instance.

Just came to post you should always ask for cake in minutes Cake

Mivery · 23/10/2017 19:39

YANBU that's barely a sliver!

ChaosAD · 23/10/2017 19:47

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

I'd usually have a quarter (or 15 minutes!) to myself.CakeSmile

treacletoffee23 · 23/10/2017 19:52

Is your MIL a Hobbit?

Ooohlalalala · 23/10/2017 20:07

She's a lovely woman, so take her as she is, or find another MIL. People have reasons for being the way they are, so respect that, even if there's not a lot of logic for holding onto outdated beliefs.

Purplealienpuke · 23/10/2017 20:44

That is definitely not a slice of cake! It's a few crumbs arranged on a plate masquerading as a slice of cake. I'm sure there's a law against impersonating cake?? If there's not then there definitely should be!!
& all this talk of cake has driven me into the kitchen to get myself cake and custard!! Thanks... Thanks a bunch 😢😩 (my will is weak ) 😩

Mix56 · 23/10/2017 20:45

Did she leave the knife when they left the room ? could you have wolled it in one whole scoff & quickly cut another joke wedge ?

SarahS2404 · 23/10/2017 20:45

YES!!

I dont even eat cake (prepares for shock) and I would expect a bigger piece than that and would give someone a bigger piece too!

Attitude84 · 23/10/2017 20:50

I’d have asked where the rest of it was!!! Grin

fishchipspeasandgravy · 23/10/2017 21:00

I’m not often grateful for my MIL but she is so keen on making sure you are fed that she will send leftover dessert home with us.

You can’t be in that house more than two minutes before being offered dinner/tea/biscuits.

waterlily200 · 23/10/2017 21:02

My mother in law is exactly the same but for her it's more about what portion size she tho is you and everyone else should have based on how hungry she is!Hmm

One year at Christmas she's made a lovely Christmas cake but she was quite full so cut the cake so thin it was practically transparent as apparently no one would want more as 'everyone is full' .

This didn't go down well and she was unimpressed with the laughter and requests for larger slices.

I said that could be her party trick to slice cake that thin which didn't crumble apart! Years of practice for a skill like that Grin

Liara · 23/10/2017 21:06

Looks fair enough to me, you can always get seconds if that's not enough for you.

PyongyangKipperbang · 23/10/2017 21:09

From the OP....

All those suggesting asking for second helpings... I'm afraid that is NOT allowed! Cake is eaten once per day, and if we're lucky this will last us 4 days, between 4 adults and 2 children

YoureAnArseholeDenise · 23/10/2017 21:09

That is the tiniest, most joyless bit of cake I’ve ever seen.

overloadedwithchocolatecake · 23/10/2017 21:11

GrinGrinGrinCake this has given me such a laugh!!!!! :) needed that! Thanks OP!!!!!! :)

CountFosco · 23/10/2017 21:13

My stingy slices are bigger than that. I've lost 2 st this year and I still managed to have bigger bits of cake than that (because 1 smallish bit of cake was still better than the 3 large bits I was having previously).

Seahawk80 · 23/10/2017 21:14

If my MIL made a cake it would be dry and awful so I’d be quite pleased to get such a tiny slice 😂

SecretSmellies · 23/10/2017 21:28

the minutes technique is an utter revelation!

SecretSmellies · 23/10/2017 21:32

anyway- for me that size would be fine for cake as i hate cake. If someone presented me with that size for a pork pie or a quiche I'd probably eat it, then eat them too.

Twopeapods · 23/10/2017 21:55

You must be my BIL's wife. We always complain about our MIL's skimpy portions! And it's not unheard of for anyone visiting for dinner to get a bag of chips on the way home Grin
