Is MIL's slice of cake a bit stingy? (Picture)

MIL is a lovely women really, but positively enjoys being frugal and detests any excess in all its forms.

She's baked us a lovely cake, but is determined for it to last for as long as possible. She is the master slice cutter and won't let anyone else near it.

AIBU to be a bit disappointed with the size of this slice?

(Everyone disappeared into the other room, so I was able to take this sneaky photo with handy scale provided by new pound coin!)

If it's fruit cake, that's probably a reasonable portion. Would always cut smaller pieces as fruit cake so dense.

Def slivver. Although had an old aunt who used to pronounce it 'slither'.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 22/10/2017 13:30

Are you a white mouse Stitch?

In human terms it is a very tiny portion indeed.

I would definitely go for another "slither" of cake, though Grin

SomethingNewToday · 22/10/2017 13:34

It's probably the reasonable, sufficient, healthy sized slice of cake you should have.

It's not how I eat cake though. If I eat cake, I EAT CAKE Grin

I know this thread is all funny and stuff but if I gave my DIL and her family a bit of cake and she posted on the internet how small her slice was I'd be shoving the rest of it up her arse.

Don't you know there's a war on?

GlitterGlue · 22/10/2017 13:48

Well you wouldn't shove it up her arse, because that would be wasteful. Your cake would be eked out over the week, one increasingly dry and miserable crumb at a time.

Cake is for enjoying.

LTB! Grin

howabout · 22/10/2017 13:52

I agree with stitch. Standard fruit cake slice. I actually cut it in matchbox size slices for lunch boxes. Take it not many people commenting ever buy / bake / eat fruit cake. DH can eat half a cake at a sitting but he is a greedy pig. If the DC eat any more than my standard portion it makes them ill later so they have learned.

howabout · 22/10/2017 13:54

glitter you do know fruit cake improves with keeping? Why do you think people make their Christmas cake in November?

whippetwoman · 22/10/2017 13:56

Sorry but this has made me laugh. I love the tiny slice picture.

endofmytetherhelp · 22/10/2017 13:59

😂😂😂

zippydoodaar · 22/10/2017 14:02

I'd eat it in two seconds flat then say...

"Ooh, that was lovely! Can I have another bit?"

Seriously, one of those small cakes you get in Tesco, Sainsburys, Waitrose cuts into six slices and that's a good guide.

Is she always stingy?

mapie · 22/10/2017 14:04

To be fair if my MIL ever baked a cake, that slice would be more than enough.

GlitterGlue · 22/10/2017 14:13

I do as I do, but I'm fairly sure the vast quantities of brandy it contains help with the preservation.

Anyway, is that a fruit cake? It's a bit hard to tell.

FlooOOOooomplet · 22/10/2017 14:15

Heck! I would have stuffed it in one go and said “lovely- can I have my proper slice now?!”

That’s barely a gobfull!!

Puzzledandpissedoff · 22/10/2017 14:15

Thanks, Ceto and Schadenfreude Smile

Howsthings1234 · 22/10/2017 14:16

Definitely ask for an XXL slice next time Grin

Olddear · 22/10/2017 14:18

Lost more in a hole on my tooth....

snowglobe67 · 22/10/2017 14:21

I'm dieting so I'd be happy. It is little though!!

abilockhart · 22/10/2017 14:23

It’s small, but it’s also what my MiL would cut. My MiL is not stingy, or short of money, but grew up with rationing, and to her, that is normal for a slice of cake. Given that so many people are overweight in this country, I suspect she may be on to something.

This is a slice I would get at my gran's.

By today's standards, the slice is way too small. I suspect it shouldn't be, though.

Allfednonedead · 22/10/2017 14:24

That's the size of slice I want. No one will ever cut that size for me. It makes me very cross.
I'm Team MIL.

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 22/10/2017 14:25

Clearly MIL's idea of a medium-sized slice is not your idea of a medium-sized slice. Could you buy MIL a protractor cake plate so that you can all be a bit more scientific about things?

Taffeta · 22/10/2017 14:28

She’s doing it wrong. She needs a traybake. She can make the pieces even smaller then.

amusedbush · 22/10/2017 14:28

Cake is a treat, not for every day, so I would probably have a portion that size.

If it's 'not for every day' then why not push the boat out and eat more than two forkfuls? Confused
