Is MIL's slice of cake a bit stingy? (Picture)

MIL is a lovely women really, but positively enjoys being frugal and detests any excess in all its forms.

She's baked us a lovely cake, but is determined for it to last for as long as possible. She is the master slice cutter and won't let anyone else near it.

AIBU to be a bit disappointed with the size of this slice?

(Everyone disappeared into the other room, so I was able to take this sneaky photo with handy scale provided by new pound coin!)

I think I probably would have lied through rationing Grin

ElinoristhenewEnid · 22/10/2017 12:27

Honestly I have been offered thinner slices that in the past!
Went to a coffee and cake morning and the vanilla sponge proved to be translucent when held up to the light! Very disappointing i aim for doorstep slices!

smallmercys · 22/10/2017 12:31

OP, how is the slice managing to stand up, are there cocktail sticks and blutack propping behind it?

Elphame · 22/10/2017 12:32

Looks like a normal slice to me.

I find I struggle to finish the slices of cake you often get served. If I go to a teashop with a friend we will usually share a portion between us.

FaFoutis · 22/10/2017 12:32

People have forgotten what a healthy piece of cake looks like.

JaneEyre70 · 22/10/2017 12:32

There is frugal, and there is mean. That slice is mean beyond words. I hack doorsteps off for my lot, means that the cake goes quicker and I'm not tempted by it - I'm diabetic Sad. She's very clearly not the feeder type Grin.

FaFoutis · 22/10/2017 12:33

My grandparents went through rationing and they ate one meal a day that was almost entirely made up of cake. Then trifle for afters.

justilou1 · 22/10/2017 12:38

If it was my mother in law, this would be a dig at my weight...

RoganJosh · 22/10/2017 12:39

Grin at homeopathic!

IsThisTheRealYou · 22/10/2017 12:45

That is a really small piece of cake. I can happily enjoy a wee piece of cake sometimes - for example I've spilt a slice of cake three ways when I've been out for a coffee with pals, not through meanness but just because we wanted a little something sweet. However, if someone asked for a medium slice of cake then that portion is VERY VERY small.

The cake slices in Marks cafes have the calories written on and I think the carrot cake is well over 700 calories per slice so splitting that three ways isn't a bad idea if you are the least bit concerned about calorie intake.

Inertia · 22/10/2017 12:47

I don't think there's enough protein in that slice of cake. I'd serve it with a piece of poached chicken and some steamed cabbage, and then I'd share the cake between me and all my children. A healthy portion of cake would be a quarter of the size of that, and only then if it's free of fat/sugar/eggs (if any of those are included I'd smell the cake safely from the other side of the room and eat some lentils instead).

I'm usually good at spotting irony, but Ii think I'm struggling with some of these posts. Or at least I think I am.......

Trunkisareshite · 22/10/2017 12:55

fonz I'm loving 'bit of a tussle'!

Was it awkward afterwards?

HeteronormativeHaybales · 22/10/2017 12:56

'People have forgotten what a healthy piece of cake looks like.'

It's small. And sometimes I'd eat a piece that size, because I didn't want a bigger one, but it's still small.

(I do think portions have gone a bit mad when eating out. Had lunch the other day at a place that does nice (substantial) salads and ordered the 'small' one. It was plenty, almost more than enough. (Very rich ingredients - walnuts, goat's cheese, dressing). And I was hungry and don't have a particularly small appetite).

HeteronormativeHaybales · 22/10/2017 12:57

There was supposed to be a Grin under that quote...

StigmaStyle · 22/10/2017 13:00

I agree cake slices in cafes are often huge and too much. BUT that is still a stingy slice of cake. If it was some kind of cream and chocolate-laden gateau then a small slice might make sense, but that's just a plain old cake. I think about twice that would be a reasonable slice. to start with

If they've gone in the other room, steal some more :o

bimbobaggins · 22/10/2017 13:04

That’s what I’d have as a starter while waiting for my actual main slice to be cut

StealthPolarBear · 22/10/2017 13:07

"Main meals were scaled down too, smaller plates than we have now...we did have a pudding too though...
No snacks...
Breakfast(cereal), Dinner(school), after school snack(cake/squash), tea, (spagetti on toast/toast topper), supper (a biscuit and piece of apple and milk)"
So you did have snacks? Is this what people mean when they say no snacking

FaFoutis · 22/10/2017 13:13

'People have forgotten what a healthy piece of cake looks like.'

A joke, Hetero, based on the many and many more weight threads (full of people with issues). There's physical health and then there are manners and hospitality. There is also mental health.

Manners and hospitality demand large slices of cake. You don't have to eat it all. Mental health is probably partly indicated by the fact that you don't measure your self worth by how little cake you eat.

FaFoutis · 22/10/2017 13:14

Supper is a snack. That's the northern kind of supper. What do those who call dinner or tea supper call supper?

Annaanaconda · 22/10/2017 13:15

OP, you say that's a medium slice. If you'd asked for small would MIL have just wafted the plate over the cake? Or maybe brushed a few crumbs onto your plate?! Wink Grin

SchadenfreudePersonified · 22/10/2017 13:15

QuiteUnfitBit

To your suggested lit I would have added

Cake? I see no cake . . .

StealthPolarBear · 22/10/2017 13:17

As is after school snack

SchadenfreudePersonified · 22/10/2017 13:20

That is a homeopathic dose of cake.
