Is MIL's slice of cake a bit stingy? (Picture)

MIL is a lovely women really, but positively enjoys being frugal and detests any excess in all its forms.

She's baked us a lovely cake, but is determined for it to last for as long as possible. She is the master slice cutter and won't let anyone else near it.

AIBU to be a bit disappointed with the size of this slice?

(Everyone disappeared into the other room, so I was able to take this sneaky photo with handy scale provided by new pound coin!)

LOL @ "couldn't eat that in one sitting" Grin

CurlyBlueberry · 22/10/2017 11:07

Mistoffelees don't know why "minutes" has never occurred to me or anyone in my family / DH's family but that is genius! (Feel rather stupid now but just hadn't ever really thought about it!) Going to try that today when we go to PIL's and have the inevitable "just a little slice, no a bit bigger, no that's too much" with MIL hovering her knife over the cake. Thank you!

Giraffesarequitetall · 22/10/2017 11:08

perpendicular that poster was joking”

I hope so because it was hilariously ridiculous 😂

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 22/10/2017 11:10

😂😂😂 Ask for a large slice next time !

gamerchick · 22/10/2017 11:11

Well it would do me but I’m not a big cake fan, it’s supposed to give you a little sugar lift after a meal not fill you up.

However I’m aware that people like big portions these days and expect to be stuffed after a meal so yes in that case it’s stingy and you should go cut a proper piece. Be that person who everyone wishes they were in the household you’re in Grin

HapsburgUrchin · 22/10/2017 11:11

All those suggesting asking for second helpings... I'm afraid that is NOT allowed! Cake is eaten once per day, and if we're lucky this will last us 4 days, between 4 adults and 2 children Hmm

Ask for an XXL portion next time! That's tiny!

SaucyJack · 22/10/2017 11:12

I'm just Confused at the plate. You'll spend more time washing that up afterwards than you will eating the cake.

I couldn't be fucked with that sort of thing on a Sunday.

numbmum83 · 22/10/2017 11:12

Oh so when it says "serves 6" on the packaging , this is probably the correct sizing of a slice , usually it serves 2 in our house ! Me and the dog lol

Illtellyouwhatswhat10 · 22/10/2017 11:14

Ha ha ha! We have a newly opened art shop and cafe, gorgeous on all fronts. Serves lovely home-made cakes. BUT the slices are tiny and at £4 a go, really pricey.

Tuvix · 22/10/2017 11:16

Cake lover here, I wouldn't even call that a mouthful tbh. Grin

Blackcatonthesofa · 22/10/2017 11:17

It's fine, she just gave you the wrong piece. The right piece was that almost round one that misses a sliver 😁

Nikephorus · 22/10/2017 11:17

That's not a slice, it's a sliver!

Bluntness100 · 22/10/2017 11:17

Loving the coin added for scale,,,😂

ElsieMc · 22/10/2017 11:18

I usually cut small slices and am a MIL. This is because no matter what cakes I bake or buy from M and S everyone will want a slice of one of the cakes and not the other. No matter how hard I try, I fail.

Last year I baked a gingerbread and flapjacks. Mix of kids and adults at party. Everyone ate the gingerbread asking for more to take home whilst the flapjack went to waste. Made a large apple crumble with enough for everyone, yet someone (adult) still went in the kitchen and ate the crumble off the top of what was left. Just why.

pontynan · 22/10/2017 11:21

My MIL also brings cake and if you ever tasted her cake you'd be grateful for a piece that size. A huge rancid wadge of fruitcake with the consistency of chipboard made with gone-off wholemeal flour ...she also has the frugal gene but unfortunately not with cake Halloween Confused

PerpendicularVincent · 22/10/2017 11:23

I certainly hope so, Margot!

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 22/10/2017 11:30

I would like to know what sort of cake it is?

I quite like small portions of things like cake because for me, the first couple of bites are the delicious ones and it becomes much of a muchness after that.

But then I'm peculiar. Blush

diddl · 22/10/2017 11:31

Is it a meal to last for a few hrs or just a treat between meals?

If the latter, tis fine.

If it's a problem take your own cake & slice it how you want!

WhiskeySourpuss · 22/10/2017 11:31

OP's MIL clearly follows this bollocks guide... 6 servings out of a 4" cake my arse unless all 6 portions are for me

To the PP who mentioned rationing - my Mum was a war baby and grew up with rationing. She very rarely baked big cakes as she had a thing about eggs. Any recipe that involved more than two eggs was seen as a huge extravagance and we only got big cakes for special occasions like birthdays. I have it so drummed into me, I still feel guilty if I use 3 or more eggs in a cake! As for that slice, it's a mouthful.

diddl · 22/10/2017 11:32

Hang on, is she at yours & has brought the cake with her-if so it's your cake to slice & eat as you wish.

bringbackfonzi · 22/10/2017 11:33

My FIL once offered me a plate with a slice of cake cut into three pieces. I tried to take the plate; he held onto it. There was a bit of a tussle then I realized he wanted me to take one of the tiny thirds of a slice on the plate. To my PILs a whole slice is greedy.

Mistoffelees · 22/10/2017 11:33

Curly my friend used it when I was serving some cake ages ago and I've used it ever since!

x2boys · 22/10/2017 11:35

My parents are like this with food if you go for tea you get tiny portions that would qualify more as a" light snack" they are however very generous with their wineGrin
