AIBU not to go on holiday with a broken leg?

ExH is trying to pressurise me into going on a short trip into mainland Europe by car (he will be driving) over the half term. He would like to spend time with the children and they will not be going on holiday with him if I am not coming.

On such occasions I would usually go with the children in our own car and stay in a separate hotel (usually in an apartment a few miles down the road from him), but with a broken leg in a cast I can’t drive. He has offered to drive us all, but I am not comfortable with this and tbh in the past I have always been grateful to have my own transport in case he is misbehaving.

ExH is of course calling me all sorts of things and apparently half the world is going on holiday with broken legs etc and I should just get on with it and not make so much fuss. The consequences of not going will be endless hostilities, but I really can’t face it. AIBU to decline?

Why can't the kids go without you?

teaandtoast · 19/10/2017 14:44

YANBU. Awful idea as far as I'm concerned.

TheNewKaren · 19/10/2017 14:45

They are not comfortable on their own with him. He’s not very good it’s them and speaks to them as though they were adults.

I found sitting in a car for any length of time very uncomfortable when my leg was in a cast so YANBU to not go.

QuestionableMouse · 19/10/2017 14:46

I can't imagine that you'd be very comfortable stuck in a car for several hours (or more).

TheNewKaren · 19/10/2017 14:46

They’re teenagers.

No - he doesn’t like flying if it can be helped.

I can't imagine why you would be going even without a broken leg. What are you thinking?

Also, in case of a breakdown or any emergency, I am not very fast on crutches.

Depends where they break is. I assume you were planning to go pre break?

TheNewKaren · 19/10/2017 14:49

All in all the journey will be the best part of the day, including channel crossing, ca. 6 hours or so.

No, it has only occurred to him last week that he would like a few days off with the kids. It was not planned at all. Nor paid for.

The kids would go, but not on their own with him. He’s guilt tripping me into coming.

I need more reasons not to come to back me up. Confused

If he was my aunt's ex I would say what an amazing coincidence that he now wants to do something that would clearly be hugely uncomfortable for you, almost as though he's deliberately set you up to be the bad guy Hmm

Ellendegeneres · 19/10/2017 14:53

Say no.

TheNewKaren · 19/10/2017 14:54

Ouch that about sums it up. E could always do a long weekend once the cast is off and I’ll be driving again, it’s just a few more weeks.

Would you even be able to get holiday insurance?

OuchBollocks · 19/10/2017 14:55

Your orthopaedic doctor has said you can't go. Too much risk of a DVT sitting down in cramped conditions for hours on end.

TheNewKaren · 19/10/2017 14:56

Yes - I’m completely U apparently and apparently everybody else goes on holiday with broken bones - what fun.

OP posts:
OuchBollocks · 19/10/2017 14:57

In all seriousness you would be at risk of a DVT and there's an excellent chance an insurer won't cover you.

TheNewKaren · 19/10/2017 14:57

Great point re insurance. Thank you, user
