Hi, I work in a supermarket. A girl has been here about 14 months and whenever she is in (I work full time and only see her once) she always takes chewing gum near the till (she works on till) and opens it and never pays. I know it's a very cheap item, but it doesn't sit right with me. WWYD?

I'd be selectively blind. If she were taking wads of tenners from the till or walking out with bottles of champagne it would be a different matter!

Yes it’s a small thing but it’s still stealing. If I saw a shopper putting a packet of chewing gum in their pocket I’d say something so this isn’t different.

Bearing in mind most big corps underpay their staff, screw the taxman and various other unpleasantries, I say look the other way.

She gets just over £8, that's hardly bad pay.

Does she know you know? It's such a small item but for me I'd feel very uncomfortable of sure knew I knew.

I'd tell a manager, its theft at the end of the day. And she's not exactly stealing a load of bread to feed her family or something. She's not taking it because she needs it but can't afford it (not that that's right either, but more mitigating circumstances).

Ask for a confidential chat with a manager. If what you say is true. It can be verified on CCTV. You have nothing to worry about.

It's not great pay though. Chewing gum costs peanuts. Don't report her. If you really can't let it go, ask her about it and whether she is paying for the gum, but don't go to her boss abut that.

Considering all tills at supermarkets have cameras trained on them (just because you can't necessarily see them, doesn't mean they're not there) I'd be very surprised that she hasn't been pulled in by management before now.

Keep your beak out. How do you know she's not paying for it at the end of her shift, or that her manager hasn't agreed to it.

I tend to mind my own business up to the point where it affects me or is severely injuring another party. A packet of gum? Would you really want someone to lose their job over that?

I cannot believe how many of you think it's ok to steal. And ok to look the other way when you see someone stealing.

I'd say to her quietly something like "just to give you the heads up, heard Management are looking at staff eating food and sweets without paying for them on the CCTCV. Just thought I'd quietly pass it on to be careful, can you quietly let anyone else know you think might be helping themselves to something little? Would be horrible if someone lost their job over a packet of smarties or the like." smile, be nice, put the idea in her head that it's not ok.

I know someone who's been fired from a job they had held for years at a supermarket for similar. It might not have even occurred to her that it's a sackable offence if noticed.
