To think friend was being a bit tight over internet password

Name changed as I'm an over sharer.
Anyway I had some issues with paying my internet account recently basically direct debit hadn't come out and I'd been cut off long story!

I was stuck at home on my own with the kids, my older dc was going on and on and on about internet being cut off stress. I thought I'll ring up and pay to get it back on etc but realised I couldn't transfer the money as no internet! My phone internet wouldn't work either.
I thought shit, I messaged my friend who lives close and I'm a round about way asked her if I could borrow her internet password to get things sorted,
Her reply was "sorry I don't want to give it out" now we've been friends for over 4 years have each other kids do stuff etc etc so I was quite shocked at her response. It's basically saying she doesn't trust me isn't it?
Yes the internet being back on wasn't urgent but I still needed it back on ASAP. I wouldn't have given a second thought to giving a "friend" the password so aibu to think she isn't really a friend as she didn't help me out when I was in the shit?

I sorted it that night by ringing someone to log onto my online banking and transfer the money from my other account

K'in ell. You give out your internet banking details to others, your dp and his mate thinks nothing of swapping pin numbers with each other - given your complete lax attitude to security I can totally see your friends point of view!
How does she know you're not going to keep on using it yourself or just randomly give it out to the milkman/next door neighbour's dog?

IfyouseeRitaMoreno · 12/10/2017 00:16

I would feel awkward about giving someone permanent access to mh internet.

Has it occurred to you that something may have happened to make her more reticent?

CadgingCarol · 12/10/2017 00:26

Rtft Confused

The person I gave the online details too was a very very close family member and even if it had been a friend I trust them 100 percent! As for this not paying my bill like I said it was more complicated than that..and you don't get any reminders!
I'm not skint by any means and she knows this and knows I wouldn't have cadged off her for long.

GabsAlot · 12/10/2017 00:52

how ar you online now then?

pinotgrigio123 · 12/10/2017 00:56

Giving your online banking details out and allowing someone else to transact on your account is beyond stupid. I definitely wouldn't trust someone that careless with anything.

Bubblebubblepop · 12/10/2017 02:25

People here wouldn't trust their best friend, or their sister say, with their internet baking details? You think they'd start stealing from you? Seriously? If that's the case you don't have proper friendships.

I wouldn't do it routinely but in an emergency wouldn't hesitate

Theresnonamesleft · 12/10/2017 02:43

No I wouldn’t. Money does strange things to people. Just look at the people rubbing their hands with glee at the prospect of an inheritance and in the fighting this causes. They were once trusted.
I wouldn’t trust my details because I don’t know what their own security is like. I don’t know if they are the type to not care about keyloggers etc. I don’t know if they are going to then leave my details for anyone to see including their mates who might not be trusted.
I wouldn’t because if anything went wrong it would be all my own fault and this is not something I personally would risk.
But then I don’t discuss my finances with anyone. None of this has any bearing on proper friendships, just protecting myself from risk.

Appuskidu · 12/10/2017 04:20

she knows this and knows I wouldn't have cadged off her for long.

Well, clearly she may not think the same as you.

ethelfleda · 12/10/2017 04:59

Wow @ some of these replies Confused

I think she was being mean! I'd have let you use my Wi-Fi if we were mates!

Clandestino · 12/10/2017 05:10

Is this for real?
If I were a “Microsoft Customer Service” scammer, a Chinese wedding dress makers or a Nigerian prince, I’d be having a party right now.
Passwords are handed out like voting leaflets, pins and internet banking details shared... people I want to be your friend too!

Bubblebubblepop · 12/10/2017 05:14

Yeah well unless I've known you since I was 11, flatshared with you in my 20s and get Christmas cards from your parents you've not got a hope of having mine

Mummyoflittledragon · 12/10/2017 05:57

I would have wanted to find out how long. I don’t see an issue with short term use especially as your ds needed to do his homework. You now know she isn’t interested in helping you out in this way. You say you have her child, is this a reciprocal arrangement?

Sallystyle · 12/10/2017 06:18

Really...........? You gave someone your internet banking details to log on to your account to transfer money from one account to another?

I don't know a soul who would give anyone their internet banking details

I would quite happily give them to my mum in similar circumstances. I haven't had to but I would totally trust her not to fleece me.

Haribeau · 12/10/2017 06:25

No internet? Really? Posting on here tho? Sort your own shit out

LivingInLaLaLand · 12/10/2017 06:40

If everyone on sky looks on the side of the internet box that's the password, my sons friends etc use it when ever they need to I don't give a shit who knows it.

Not necessarily, if she has teens/preteens in the house then it's very likely that she's changed it as we have. You can't use wifi access as a bargaining tool with your kids if you use the original one stuck on the box, nor can you stop the ex friends who went on to bully your DC from standing outside your house & laughing whilst nicking your wifi - which happens

Lots of reasons why she might have changed it, or not even know it herself & not at all weird that she says "no" ours isn't the password on the box & therefore I would also say no, I might sign you in myself though.

MongerTruffle · 12/10/2017 06:44

I can't believe that people are suggesting that the OP should use public Wi-Fi to make a payment.

PurpleDaisies · 12/10/2017 06:50
Confused
Haribeau · 12/10/2017 06:50

Seems quite happy to air all else tho..

pigeondujour · 12/10/2017 06:53

I wouldn't really care about giving out my wifi details but I would feel uncomfortable being asked for anything that started with a tale of how the bank had messed something up and a payment hadn't gone through. No offence, OP, but I have an instinctive mistrust of those stories and would suspect it was going to be followed up with a request for money, so would probably try to extricate myself preemptively - especially if the person lived next door and I couldn't just avoid them altogether.

Laura2018 · 12/10/2017 06:53

It's only a bit of internet so I don't see why shes bothered imo. Having said that, why not try to entertain your kids another way? Also it takes a while to be cut off from the internet after an unpaid bill so this must have gone on for a while. There are lots of other fun things for kids and adults to do other than stare at their phone/computer all day.

Sallystyle · 12/10/2017 06:54

You could try reading the OP's posts.

Sallystyle · 12/10/2017 06:56

There are lots of other fun things for kids and adults to do other than stare at their phone/computer all day.

I am sure OP is grateful for your advice. I am sure she had no idea that you could do other things in life.

Maybe you missed the part when it was also needed for homework?

CakesRUs · 12/10/2017 07:00

I wouldn't have either. And it's ok for her to say no to your request.

Haribeau · 12/10/2017 07:03

Ok bono, what's your wisdom or have you already transferred the money for the unpaid bill?
