Just tried to pay for some stuff in the Co-Op with a mix of old and new £1 coins. Cashier refused the old ones saying "we don't take those any more".

Now I know there was fuss earlier in the week about some stores continuing to accept them after the cut off, but I thought the cut off was the weekend?

Isn't the cut off the 15th? Had an issue with co-op trying to refuse my old 5pounds note the day before the cut off. I made a bit of a fuss and was helped by friendly person in queue behind so they relented :)

Just a bit of a pain as I had to root through my purse for another coin when the one I'd originally tendered was perfectly legal...

Legal tender just means if you settle a debt with it, it must be accepted.

It's the shop's prerogative to what coins/notes they accept.

You'd have thought so. I would also imagine that the Co-Op would be banking the takings every night so it's easy to take the old ones out of circulation. I volunteer at a charity shop and that's what we've been doing for weeks - banking old coins and keeping only new in the float.

My local coop once refused to accept my little pile of precounted coins. I had nothing else with me and left humiliated without my shopping.

They don't need to bank every night, as long as they already have to take their money to the bank at some point I can't see the point of moving the deadline forward and making it harder for customers rly...

I appreciate that not all businesses can bank every night. But this is a reasonably large shop we're talking about, which is open 6am to 10pm, has a cash machine, plenty of staff. It's not a one man band corner shop.

We only used to bank weekly, and it was a quite big clothes shop. Christmas you might have twice weekly if needed.

It’s still knobbish to not take the coins. Apparently it’s because they can’t be bagged with the new coins, which is oh so very hard to work around.

They shouldn't be allowed to give them out in change then if they won't except them.

I was coming in to say not even the co-op are accepting them! And then see it was the co-op. Here they haven't been accepting them for nearly two weeks, apparently on orders of head office. Though some people on local news site said their local branch still was.

I was given an old pound coin in change from co-op today.

My local Morrisons gave me an old pound coin as part of my change today
