to think they should have accepted my old £1 coin?

Just tried to pay for some stuff in the Co-Op with a mix of old and new £1 coins. Cashier refused the old ones saying "we don't take those any more".

Now I know there was fuss earlier in the week about some stores continuing to accept them after the cut off, but I thought the cut off was the weekend?

I was given one in change today when I bought my lunch and asked them to swap it for a new one which they did (not Co-op).

I work in a very small independent shop. I've had no guidance from the owner despite me asking. I was in Barclays yesterday and they confirmed that what i was doing was correct. Accepting them but not giving them out. I'm putting the old ones for banking and keeping new ones in the float. She said they don't want shops giving them out as they want them back and said they will be accepting them for some time after this weekend.

What I want to know is: when the bank imposes a coin or note change on us all, do the businesses have to pay for changing their equipment? Do council-run leisure centres have to fork out for changing their locker mechanisms?

kath6144 · 12/10/2017 07:58

My DS worked for a large clothes retailer over the summer, he said they were separating the old ones as soon as they got them and only giving new ones out, as it should be.

I spent one in a card shop the other day, DH dug out a pile of them last night, so will try and use them today otherwise will take to a bank.

The Coop are hypocritical, giving them out but not taking them. I would refuse to accept one now if given.

wanderings our self service tills have had to go cash only

Next July the £20 changes...... Bank of England were making a decision regarding £50 notes as they might go completely

Will be new self service tills ....at companies cost

RunningOutOfCharge · 12/10/2017 08:03

*CARD only!!

Chasingsquirrels · 12/10/2017 08:17

Interesting about old denominations (shillings and half pennies).
I found 2 halfpennies and a shilling in late-DH's bits I was clearing out last weekend. I could take them to the bank! Don't think I'll bother!

disahsterdahling · 12/10/2017 08:19

Retailers are so naughty. All they need to do is take it to the bank. If this is truly their head office policy, I'd tweet them and give them what for. I bet if they get one they'll be trying to palm it off on the poor customer, too, I'd refuse to accept them now and insist on a new one or two 50p coins.

My DH was given an old £5 note the day before they went out of circulation, too. He wasn't best pleased when he realised, though he did manage to get rid of it again. He was palmed off with a new Scottish £5 recently too. A lot of retailers are fine with Scottish notes in England, but some aren't, so you don't really want to be given them.

disahsterdahling · 12/10/2017 08:19

Do council-run leisure centres have to fork out for changing their locker mechanisms

Our lockers take both, but it's a new centre.

But yes, I think the cost falls on the business/government body/local authority.

londonrach · 12/10/2017 08:25

Im refusing old £1 now and we emptied out money box which sadly only had 1p or 2ps.

deepestdarkestperu · 12/10/2017 09:07

No, they’re just following the law. No shop has to accept any money if they don’t want to!

RunningOutOfCharge · 12/10/2017 09:13

Once they have handed you the change and closed the till they are under no obligation to re open it to swap coins!!!

karriecreamer · 12/10/2017 09:18

do the businesses have to pay for changing their equipment?

Yes, it's part of the costs of running your operation.

CiderwithBuda · 12/10/2017 09:24

The British Legion will take the old pound coins apparently. So if anyone can't be bothered taking them to the bank pop them in a Poppy Collection Box.

brownfang · 12/10/2017 09:36

I thought the new £20 note didn't arrive until 2020?

Oh well. I got an old £1 coin yesterday in change. Banks are easy for me to pop into as is Sainsbury's self-service.

Wincher · 12/10/2017 09:44

Our local swimming pool had its changing rooms refurbished and new lockers put in last year, summer 2016 - and the new lockers don't take the new £1 coin, only the old one! It's crazy. I think they keep a stock of old ones at the front desk for people to swap their new ones for, but that isn't going to be possible really after next week as they won't be able to get more in. Although I suppose it might incentivise people to swap the coins back after their swim. We have taken to keeping an old £1 coin in the car to use when we go to that pool, but I bet we lose it at some point. Old trolley tokens work too though.

Enko · 12/10/2017 09:54

Most supermarkets will be using a company like Loomis to get their banking done for them. It is rare it will be coins banked usually just bank notes.

I work for a supermarket and I had to seek out information for our cash office lady to find out how exactly we would to bank the old pound coins when she did not know how to go about banking coins.

I do think that the co op should have taken your coin though OP

caoraich · 12/10/2017 17:46

Gah!

Today the lady in the RVS shop in the hospital distracted me by cooing over the shiny plastic otter tenner and sneakily gave me four old £1s in my change.

Are vending machines still taking them? I suppose I could stock up on crisps

DontMakeMeShushYou · 12/10/2017 18:08

caoraich Just take them to the bank. Or give them to the Poppy Appeal - they, along with several other charities have said they will accept them as donations for a while yet.

BlueCows · 12/10/2017 19:14

Anyone else been contacted by a Times reporter wanting to chat about £1 coins?

MollyHuaCha · 12/10/2017 19:30

Today I rummaged through handbags and pockets (my own!) to locate any stray £1 coins and spent them on my way home at Sainsburys. They didn’t have a problem taking them.

kangaremedy · 12/10/2017 19:45

I'm sure someone has already said but Banks are still accepting the old £1 for quite some time yet so they should have taken them right up until the 15th.

You should be able to pay them into your local bank branch if you still have any.

Rainybo · 12/10/2017 21:05

Yes, I was contacted by a Times reporter too BlueCows. I haven’t replied though.

BlueCows · 12/10/2017 21:06

I didn't reply either.

Rainybo · 12/10/2017 21:10

I was tempted, but then I thought - lazy! Go stand outside a Coop and do your journalism Grin
