To NOT get WIFI??

loveitorleaveit · 07/10/2017 20:16

Me and my DP have a phone each with more than enough data to use when we are at home for internet etc. We have 3 TVs throughout the house with more than enough channels, a DVD player and a PS4 with mass amounts of dvds and games. We have never felt the need to pay an addition cost for sky/virgin/WiFi

My DP has an 11 year old son who comes to ours every other weekend and twice each week on week nights. Since he got his own phone and iPad for his birthday we allow him to connect to our data so he can use them to play on games and access the internet.

I am just about fed up of hearing his comments about us not having WiFi or sky ‘you’re like old people’ ‘it’s just stupid’ ‘I guess I’ll have to waste my mobile data AGAIN’ ‘oh great we have to watch NORMAL tv’ ‘god sake I can’t play online here on PS4’

Really!!?? I’ve told him to doesn’t know how lucky he is! He just roles his eyes at me. My DP doesn’t say anything to his comments, and tells me that’s kids nowadays!

Maybe it is but it still frustrates me!

AIBU???

Honestly in this day and age I'd consider home wifi on a level to central heating. It's the 21st century, and your partner has a child who he's responsible to provide for.

WickedLazy · 07/10/2017 20:47

Do you update your ps4 by tethering it to a mobile, or using one as a hot spot? Does that not take forver and a day?

Birdsgottafly · 07/10/2017 20:48

I have a low cost Sim only plan and my Adult DD doesn't have one with a lot of data.

It worked out cheaper to have Wifi, than up our data.

You are answering your own question, really, because you are starting to hit problems, now that there is another person, who uses the internet a lot.

EdmundCleverClogs · 07/10/2017 20:49

How do you get patches for your PS4 games?

Or do system updates in general, as they often need to.

Birdsgottafly · 07/10/2017 20:49

Also, I struggle with adverts, I'd hate to have to live without the pause/record facility.

RobotGoat · 07/10/2017 20:52

We've moved house a week ago and only got WiFi set up today. I hated not having it! You're not BU for choosing not to have it for yourself, but I think it's probably one of those things that if you're used to it it's really difficult to adjust to not having it. On holiday with no WiFi is one thing, but if your SS is starting with you every other week it would be a nice thing to get for him if it makes him feel more at home. You can get loads of deals that make it very inexpensive - I know plusnet used to do it free for a year and you only paid line rental. Don't know if they still do. I think you said you have a landline, so you're already paying for the big expense.

c3pu · 07/10/2017 20:52

In this day and age, not having broadband is a bit like not having a phone line would be in the 90's.

Sure, you can live without it, as you can with most mod cons (including central heating and hot running water if you really want). But it's rather unusual.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 07/10/2017 20:53

Last time me and 10 yr old DD were without internet we were going insane. Mobile data costs a fortune.

Ta1kinPeece · 07/10/2017 20:54

After a bad experience this summer, my family will no longer stay in any holiday building without wifi

justdontevenfuckingstart · 07/10/2017 20:55

I am still paying for Sky because my lovely partner just can't manage anything else.

planetclom · 07/10/2017 20:56

Jesus wept. I am with him and I am 50, not having Wi-fi fo me now would be like not having electricity, I have rejected houses whilst we are house hunting because you can’t get broadband at them

SusanTheGentle · 07/10/2017 20:56

Well you can live without it. But why would you? You'll be costing yourselves a fortune in data and yes you can watch TV, but all the stuff on normal channels is shite: £5.99 a month for Netflix (or YouTube etc for free but, ahem, not exactly copyright compliant) and a cheap broadband package is probably cheaper than your phone data and infinitely nicer.

somewhereovertherain · 07/10/2017 20:57

Come and live here. No phone signal. So you’d be buggered without Wi-fi.

And it costs about £10 a month for unlimited fibre. Where as Mobile data usually capped and usually more expensive.

SparklyLeprechaun · 07/10/2017 20:57

I can't imagine not having broadband. Unlimited data on our phones would be more expensive, plus tethering is much slower.

justdontevenfuckingstart · 07/10/2017 20:57

Ta1 me and oh went on a lodge holiday long weekend, no internet or phone signal. I can't do that again.

Rheged · 07/10/2017 20:57

Gosh, I’d struggle without wifi. Mobile data is expensive in comparison so i’m not sure why anyone would opt out, honestly. Yes, I could live without it. I could also live without my tumble dryer and power shower if I had to. But these are things that I can afford and that make my life more agreeable so why would I?

nuttyknitter · 07/10/2017 20:58

I'm in my 60s - wifi is a human right!

SusanTheGentle · 07/10/2017 20:58

@planetclom I'm just imagining my DH's face if I suggested we move into a house without the ability to get broadband. He checks download speeds in the area meticulously before we even think about a move. He's rejected JOBS because 'there's no chance I'm moving to X, have you seen this? thrusts data at me'.

MaidenMotherCrone · 07/10/2017 20:59

My parents were old and they had wifi OpWink

Blimey , I have to have wifi when I go on holiday , it's a necessity . Just get a cheap plan fgs.

Etymology23 · 07/10/2017 21:03

Gosh I have to say I think no wifi is a bit ridiculous! I pay £10 pcm inc line rental for mine... one of my close friends hasn't but they don't have kids so it's only him who is affected!

If you let him tether to your phone then fair enough but I would get mighty fed up with no Netflix, no spotify, no iPlayer, no YouTube, no 4OD etc etc even if you ignore fb, WhatsApp etc. If you aren't letting him tether (or tethering means he can only use wifi in one room) then I would say you are definitely being unreasonable.

Etymology23 · 07/10/2017 21:05

(And if you have unlimited/a very large amount of data you're often banned in the contract from tethering or your connection is throttled.)

deepestdarkestperu · 07/10/2017 21:06

YABVU.

WiFi is much cheaper and faster than fannying around with mobile internet.

Fanciedachange17 · 07/10/2017 21:07

No wifi? Wow. I don't have a mobile phone or Sky Tv but we'd be lost without Wifi.
