To tell the teacher that dd won't be doing the detention ?

Wibblywobblyfoo · 06/10/2017 20:15

Dd came home from school tonight saying that she has been given an after school detention, to be done on monday, for missing a bit of homework that was meant to be handed in today. She went to her lesson and they were all asked for their homework. She told the teacher there was none and the teacher logged onto the online homework portal and showed them the set work, that she had set at 9.30pm last night!
Dd is 14 and was in bed at 9.30 last night. We also have a no computers after 8.30 pm for them all during the week.
Is setting the work that late reasonable?

WTF, I am Dyslexic and understood the OP's Post.

How about reading & Comprehending what the OP wrote

YANBU OP. ((((((((Hugs)))))))

I'd like to offer a different scenario.

Teacher was going to be off and left work for TA / cover supervisor/ supply teacher. Any work not completed in class was to be completed for homework.

Class piss about because it is not their teacher, note or email get backs to usual teacher who adds a note to the work set because kids have been both messing around and claiming they 'don't get it', the note changes the date on the system.

she wasnt there on tuesday, they had no teacher tuesday, just a study hall period.

If the teacher knew they were not in they would have set work. Even if they were phoning in sick they would probably be saying, "tell them to do the work on page 15" or something.

AnnieAnoniMouse · 07/10/2017 03:33

TheMaddHugger. Comprehension skills on MN are at an all time low.

Mind you, some teachers on here spouting about their high standards aren't perfect either Because I am that black and white most of my homework comes in and it is too standard.

...it is too standard.

🤣 glass houses.

The utter certainty from so many on MN that all children are little liars and all teachers are self sacrificing saints that never get it wrong is laughable and actually quite dangerous. No wonder so many teens despise authority.

elfinpre · 07/10/2017 05:47

IMO homework should never be set for the next day (never mind at 9.30pm) and the school should ban teachers from doing this as DD's school does.

Have you RTFT ? There are far more posters outright condemning the action of the teacher than challenging the pupil's version. The most that has been said is that the full story be checked out before going further.

roundaboutthetown · 07/10/2017 07:06

Ffs. The OP has a garbled version of the reason for her detention from her dd - she hasn't heard from the school, yet. There is no way on earth the teacher would give a detention to an entire class of kids bar 2 because they didn't check to see if there was homework posted on the online portal at 9.30pm the night before. Anyone just accepting that this is the actual reason for the detention without asking the school is a stupid fuckwit.

Wibblywobblyfoo · 07/10/2017 07:25

Woah. People really do not read things before jumping to the nasty assumptions do They?
I have said
I saw that there was no homework from this teacher earlier in the day. ( dd completed 2 other homeworks)
The portal showed the time. 9.30pm.
There was a note attached that said it was set then as the work needed to be done for the lesson the next day and the teacher was sorry that she had missed the lesson due to a last minute situation and that it was unfortunate no cover teacher was available.
Also
I have never said I would go in shouting and balling.

Nor have I had a go about the teacher.
Dd did the homework last night along with other homework.
In the time she had been there she has never had a detention for missed Work, she struggles due to dyslexia so makes sure she does not get behind in anything that she can help.
The school have to contact the parents to inform of after school detentions and it is a detention for incomplete homework to be served on Monday, not an additional optional class.
I know dd. She knows thar a phone call to the school would give me the details if she was lying.
I do back the school, she is not my first crack at secondary, if they don't follow rules they should deal with the punishment. But also I don't agree with unfair or unobtainable expectations.
Even the teachers emails cone with a note about what times parents can reasonably expect replies....and after 7pm isn't on there...

Slartybartfast · 07/10/2017 07:39

an after school detention? in primary? Shock
and the whole class needs to attend, presumably, apart from the 2 who stayed up after 9.30.?

what do you plan to do op?

Slartybartfast · 07/10/2017 07:41

oh not primary Blush

you know op, i would do nothing if I were you.

but tbh why no computers after 8.30 op? at the age of 14?

BandHag · 07/10/2017 07:48

As your dd is not being singled out i would tell her that it isnt fair but go to the detention with her class. Maybe the teacher is going to teach during the detentiin??

MaisyPops · 07/10/2017 07:49

So work was set for the lesson and the teacher wanted it finished. (Which is fairly standard cover lesson instructions if I'm honest. I always leave a note saying 'any incomplete work mist be conpleted by next lesson' and I know many of my colleagues do).
She added it to the portal later.

Put it this way, had the work been completed in the lesson it was set there would be no homework

I set homework for 2 groups yesterday in class. All our homework has to be on the VLE. I'm going to put it onto the VLE this morning.

If someone came to me and complained that I had set homework on a Saturday then I'd just roll my eyes. Students were told yesterday.

Wibblywobblyfoo · 07/10/2017 07:53

maisy
No work was given during the missed lesson. They were told to read.
The teacher put it on at 9.30 and wanted it the next morning for the first season after break.
Even if yours is due in on Monday those children will have had over 48 hours to do it.

I have never known of a primary school using after school detentions - never mind for almost a whole class

Slartybartfast · 07/10/2017 07:56

op dd is 14

N0tNowBernard · 07/10/2017 07:57

There needs to be a cut-off point in the evening for when children don't need to check the portal anymore and 9:30pm is definitely too late. Regardless of whether they're up at that time or not, you have to have some evening to yourself surely?

I'm with you OP and would be emailing the teacher about this. Those poor kids. The school needs to have a time that is the cut-off so the children don't have to worry about checking for more work after that time.

catkind · 07/10/2017 07:59

Except there wasn't a cover teacher or a cover lesson, and this was acknowledged by the teacher in the note on the homework portal?
Hope you can contact someone for her and get this sorted out OP. If all but 2 didn't do it there's clearly been a mistake.

youarenotkiddingme · 07/10/2017 08:00

Is it any wonder pupils get disrespectful when there is so obviously so many adults who think they should 'just serve a punishment' for an unfair situation that they didn't create in the first place.

Tw1nsetAndPearls · 07/10/2017 08:00

Mind you, some teachers on here spouting about their high standards aren't perfect either Because I am that black and white most of my homework comes in and it is too standard.

Well done @AnnieAnoniMouse I have handed in mum notice because of a typo/ autocorrect made on a forum, tapping on my phone, whilst watching trashy TV.

Never claimed to be perfect, most teachers who use detentions in that fashion will get most homework in - nothing to do with my imagined perfection and all to do with the system

Vickyturner1366 · 07/10/2017 08:01

Depends if the class was told about the homework before it was put on the portal.
If that was case and your dd was not paying attention then the detention should stand, if not the teacher is out of order

How many children handed in homework and seemed to know any had been set?
