To be really looking forward to going to ikea? What should I buy?

I haven't been to ikea for a couple of years, and next week will be less than half an hour from one, so of course I'm going. I've been looking through the website to try to make a list, but it doesn't work so well for browsing when you don't know what you're looking for. What are your ikea must haves? And AIBU for looking forward to going?

After 15 years of re-attaching wardrobe doors, shelves etc and looking at suitcases/junk piled on top of them, I finally bought two large Pax wardrobes with sliding doors last year Smile
They go from floor to ceiling, hide a multitude of stuff (as well as our clothes) so that the bedroom always looks tidy - and the doors are mirrored, so the whole room looks lighter and much more spacious. They're the best thing that I've ever bought for the house, and make me incredibly happy; I can't recommend them enough Grin

Bloomed · 07/10/2017 23:50

Hmm pax wardrobes added to list

llangennith · 07/10/2017 23:58

I've lived near Cardiff ikea since it opened.
My advice is allow an hour or more there. When you get there follow th arrows

llangennith · 08/10/2017 00:00

posted too soon in my excitement re ikea😂
...go round the store then go to the cafe for lunch or coffee so you can chill as you'll be all ikea-d out.
Then go round again with a trolley and your tick box list.
When you get near the tills pick out all the stuff you really don't need.

Ha, I live less than 5 minutes drive from the Glasgow one which is HUGE. DS3 demands to go there for fish and chips and the play area. When he was at nursery we were there once a week! The play area staff know him well!
Yes to all of these suggestions. Adding:
. Desks- got 2 recently for older DC
. Swivel chairs to match
.amazing wall thing you can attach anything to- using ours with the desks but can be used in any room. Not describing it well but they are awesome!
. Kallax
.Pax- have 6 and have loved them for 10 years.
.pp my friend has your chair in yellow, it is bloody lovely and very comfy.
Ikea is immense!

Hotheadwheresthecoldbath · 08/10/2017 02:29

We are going next week to buy shelves.AND NOTHInG else ,'onest....

abigailgabble · 08/10/2017 16:29

A trip to the dirty restaurant.

I bought this AWESOME washing hanger for £3 on my last trip (I go appx once per house move - the time between helps me to stay enthused!) we call it THE OCTOPUS.

abigailgabble · 08/10/2017 16:33

SOCKTOPUS ShockShock mine is mainly a baby-bib-topus. Mine does not have eyes! Anyway... it is Essential.

SoPassRemarkable · 08/10/2017 16:41

Went to the Sheffield one today. Seems smaller than the Leeds or Nottingham ones but it's on two levels so maybe it just seems smaller.

God it was rammed. Car park was full just after 11am.

Yes, Christmas decorations are in.

elQuintoConyo · 08/10/2017 16:42

Socktopus is sometimes Pants-topus or Soft-toy-topus! A friend bought one for her husband who develops his own photos.

I still have: plastic strainer, set plastic salad tongs, set sharp kitchen knives, set round tupperware and a toaster that i bought on my very first trip in 2001 Shock

And DH and i have never argued there.

EliseC1965 · 08/10/2017 16:59

I use my socktopi in the greenhouse to hang bunches of herbs and lavender to dry.

Have every size sandwich bag going.

Also feel like I own a SpaceNk as persuaded db to get me a Godmorgen mirrored cabinet. It’s amazeballs!

I might nip in on my half day Tuesday now. Fancy meatballs for lunch. :)

Bloomed · 08/10/2017 17:05

I love the look of the godmorgen cabinet for toiletries and bathroom junk. Does it store a lot? Only problem is that my bathroom is fully tiled and I don't think landlord would be keen on me drilling into his tiles for the wall fixings. How stable is it?

SoPassRemarkable · 08/10/2017 17:10

Does anyone know about the big back lit bathroom mirrors.....is the light a battery or do they need to be wired into the mains?

this one

onlyindreams · 08/10/2017 17:13

Can someone tell me what is special about the sandwich bags.

Iwanttobe8stoneagain · 08/10/2017 17:17

Meatballs and loganberry juice, something useless from the market place

SoPassRemarkable · 08/10/2017 17:17

I was curious about the sandwich bags as well!

SoPassRemarkable · 08/10/2017 17:18

They do good deep fitted sheets, useful if you have a deep memory foam mattress.

RollerCoasterProteinSpill · 08/10/2017 17:24

Nearly all the good stuff has been mentioned above except Bekväm step stool. I gave mine to my elderly Dad thinking I would snag another but every time I go they are sold out! So I have to keep returning! Wink I do so love living 25 minutes away instead of 2 1/2 hours.

May I present: 30 Rock Ikea visit

Or just google Ikea Hacks.

@bitchfromhell my cousin has that chair and it is supremely comfortable.

To be really looking forward to going to ikea? What should I buy?
Deux · 08/10/2017 17:37

The Studvig range of bathroom storage with suction cups is very good. Much better than any others I've tried as they stay put. They have a screw on bit that pushes the sucker on to the wall. They can take a decent weight too, so shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, without falling off.

DH loathes Ikea and we always row if he comes so I go with 9 yo DD. We aim to get there around 5.30pm on a Saturday when it's much quieter. We have tea - meatballs and daim cake - then have a good wander round. The boys have to fend for themselves. It's our Happy Place. The boys stay at home and watch Starwars or something on Dave.Smile

Oysterbabe · 08/10/2017 17:42

DH bloody loves it. We live a short walk from one and would go every week if he had his way. We're buying a kitchen there and he's just decided we need to go back to look at the worktops again one more time 😣

Deux · 08/10/2017 17:44

Does anyone have red covers for Ektorp? We're changing a sofa and I'm going to get a 3 seater Ektorp.

I'd prefer the grey covers but DH really dislikes grey and he normally doesn't have strong feelings on house decor at all. I reckon I can change to grey covers by stealth at a later point.

Just don't know if it'd be too in your face. Decor is very neutral. Shade of white walls, wooden floor, lots of glass. Also want to get one of the Lion Chairs (grey?) but the red covers have thrown my plans into disarray. I'd value opinions.

It’s really, really heavy. Had to use special king bolt/ screws for it. But it holds masses.

ShimmeringIce · 08/10/2017 20:08

The Gateshead store has Xmas, and also a smell of open fires, unless I was imagining it!
Kallax stores loads, deceptively large boxes, though the range of colours is limited atm.

I have to buck the trend though, I prefer the Lakeland rectangular sock drier... have just binned three socktopi!

abigailgabble · 08/10/2017 20:33

@elQuintoConyo me and my dp LOVE a row but in ikea it’s all heads together, tape measure out and tag team in the restaurant 🤔
