To be really looking forward to going to ikea? What should I buy?

I haven't been to ikea for a couple of years, and next week will be less than half an hour from one, so of course I'm going. I've been looking through the website to try to make a list, but it doesn't work so well for browsing when you don't know what you're looking for. What are your ikea must haves? And AIBU for looking forward to going?

I had a lovely trip to the new Sheffield IKEA earlier this week. It was most enjoyable but I would warn you all that we had to queue for about half an hour in the café and it wasn’t easy to park.

The big blue laundry basket - it’s huge and so light it’s amazing.
Weird and wonderful lightbulbs
The fake plants
The mustard

BeatriceBeaudelaire · 06/10/2017 12:50

Ooh yes yes to the underwear octopus too!! We have one and I really need another

SpearmintTea · 06/10/2017 13:44

I'm going for my birthday day out. Now that is devotion!

DH is taking the day off and coming with me. I think that's devotion! or he's going for the cake

I wish I'd known about the socktopus a few weeks ago when I bought a boring non aquatic sock dryer from home bargains!

My shopping list is going to be soooo long! And I'm hoping that for the first time we'll be able to get hot dogs and ice cream when we leave - it's always been closed in the past.

I am addicted too but have never set foot inside one! Must get a delivery at least every other month...just wish they did their full range online. Actually no, that would be disastrous!

GinandGingerBeer · 06/10/2017 15:08

Can't wait to visit the new Sheffield ikea Grin
It's been such a pita trekking over to Manchester or Nottingham and spending the full day there until you're exhausted and can't tell a socktopus from a meatball.
Next mid week day off I'm there, on my own, bliss!
Keep the suggestions coming!

Kallax.
Wrapping paper

Saw some lovely lilac plant pots in a friend's playroom, great for colouring pencils.

LakieLady · 06/10/2017 18:03

Tea towels
Poang chair - really comfortable
Towels
Bed linen
Rugs

Feelingchipper · 06/10/2017 19:47

Does anyone have one of these dish Drainer? Would you recommend it? www.ikea.com/gb/en/search/?k=Drainer&N=0+38413&Nr=AND%28content.type%3Ap%2Csku.browsable%3A1%29&summary=true

elQuintoConyo · 07/10/2017 16:10

Oh, and a set of their tupperware with green lids - something like 14 different sized boxes in one pack. Kept our 3yo entertained for DAYS Grin

Actually think i might buy him his own set to keep his toys and assorted crap in for Christmas - he'll be 6!

MumsOnCrack · 07/10/2017 16:16

We call ours a socktopus...

Chunkymonkey123 · 07/10/2017 16:25

Sorry if it's already been said but apply for a family card online. Free tea and coffee on week days and 40p latte etc.

Bitchfromhell · 07/10/2017 16:33

Im due an ikea trip soon has anyone got this chair? It's the one from the lion advert and I might order it online if anyone can recommend it? Doubt it would fit in the car if I wait till I go anyway.

Also, does anyone have any good ikea glasses that don't go cloudy in the dishwasher? I love their glasswear but they look old really quickly.

Sorry for hijack op Blush my recommendations are:
Sturdy bookcases that you can fit baskets in. They're great on their side as benches too.
Mirrors.
Cutlery.
Wrapping paper and the big hanging paper decorations.
Pillar candles.
Embroidered cushions.
Plant pots.

squiz81 · 07/10/2017 17:17

bitchfromhell we have that chair. We love it, very comfy and I think it must have stain guard on it as we have been able to wipe off marks (and we have the oatmeal coloured one). It has received lots of compliments from guests too.

thatdearoctopus · 07/10/2017 17:23

You gave a £1.20 cheese grater as a wedding gift?! ShockShockShock

Bitchfromhell · 07/10/2017 17:44

Thanks squiz will order tomorrow, will go for dark grey I think as it's for the playroom and at least one cat will commandeer it. Did you get the footstool?

squiz81 · 07/10/2017 18:10

No footstool Sad I wanted it but dh said no

The dark grey is a good choice, - hope you like it now I have endorsed it 😂!

Bratsandtwats · 07/10/2017 18:30

Buy their large blue bags, great for just throwing your food shopping in to.

Bloomed · 07/10/2017 18:43

As you all seem to be ikea experts. Help! I've moved somewhere with very little furniture or storage. I need the most storage possible, in the most space/cost efficient way. I was thinking of the largest kallax (with add on doors?) and the largest chest of drawers they make. Does the kallax store a lot? It would be for papers, clothes, toiletries, gadgets etc. I've been holding out for my local gumtree and freecycle etc but will have to go the ikea route.

PashPash · 07/10/2017 18:50

Relationship counselling

We ALWAYS have a humongous row in or near Ikea. And we aren't big rowers.

HarryDresdensLeatherDuster · 07/10/2017 19:53

Oooooo, I have to go soon have to go soon as DS has just moved into his first student house and I have promised a spree when I go up to first in a couple of weeks!

He is rather disappointing though as he doesn't want to buy EVERYTHING Shock!!!!!

HarryDresdensLeatherDuster · 07/10/2017 19:54

Ha, so excited I can't type properly!

thecanaries · 07/10/2017 21:09

Making a kind of art station for my DC - white boards, buckets of pens and crayons hanging on a rail. Large roll
Of paper fixed to the wall, tables and chairs.

Hoping I get 5 mins of peace . This is his birthday present - love IKEA

hidinginthecupboard · 07/10/2017 22:07

Sandwich bags, blankets, daim cake and best buy ever a raskog trolley - we use ours for homework, letters from school, magazines etc - DC and me have a tray each usually but I have hijacked all three as I have hurt my knee and am confined to the sofa - top tray is currently cups of tea, remote controls and snacks, middle magazines and bottom one work stuff - I shunt it back and forth to the kitchen with my crutches 😀

Betsyboo87 · 07/10/2017 22:30

Everyone has to have a Rotera lantern or two. Particularly good for summer bbqs. But yes.... sandwich bags. We can't leave without there.

One of my cons to moving was that we'd be further away from the ikea just opening....
