AIBU to not support DD with her YouTube videos?

DD is a singer and has been using vine/musically, etc. for a while now and has an ok following (not huge). I've never been keen... However, she used to make them with friends and then they used to post them and I had no control over that and soon, struggled to have any control on what she was doing.

Anyway, she now has a YouTube and has a few thousand subscribers, again not huge, but I don't like the idea of that many people seeing her online. I just don't like anything about it.

She wants this new microphone for her Christmas present and I've said not if it's being used for the videos. My mum seems to think I'm being a bit ridiculous.

She turns 16 at the end of this month.

I feel like at this point, you're not going to stop her doing it. And if she is going to, then she needs a decent microphone. The fact that you feel like you don't have any control over what she's doing strikes me as the major problem here - although it seems reasonably harmless, if you don't want her doing it she shouldn't have been doing it. It sounds like your DM hasn't been the best influence on her.

That said - she has a channel, she has a small following and she's about to turn 16. Under those circumstances, YABU not to buy her a microphone.

I think you should buy her the microphone and support her but maybe help her make sure that she's safe and she keep's her personal information on lock down as much as possible.

Buy it and support her. YouTube can be fab and a good way to earn money too. My niece started YouTube at a similar age (a bit older but not much) and she's now paid off my SIL's mortgage with her earnings!!

At 16 and with a hope for a career as a entertainer that will make her publically known if it goes well, i think she is old enough to decide if she wants to be public online. I think you should support her.

YouTube is a good platform. If she's genuinely in to it, I would buy her the mic. She's almost 16, not 6. She'll get the odd dickish comment probably but that's the worst thing that will happen on YouTube! My neice vlogs on YouTube, makes a decent amount of money for it now.

I think you should buy her the microphone and get involved with her. By helping her (not interfering!) you can make sure she stays safe and support her in something that is obviously important to her.

Buy it, and support her. It's a hell of a lot more proactive than many 26 year olds, and it's also a very difficult career. I'd want to be on side for my daughter, and that doesn't mean saying no (it does mean insisting on finishing school etc but you don't mention any of that as reasons. I can't work out what your reasons are actually)

What exactly is your objection to it? how do you think famous singers get exposure?? through youtube a lot of the time. its a huge platform.

If she was on telly, critics and social media would have their say. At 16 there's little you can do to stop her but you can do a lot to alienate her.

A lot of YTubers have moved over to You Now, something to do with ad revenue being cut.

Encourage her but monitor her, closely.

Only thing I'd ask is if she has a thick skin. A hell of a lot of people go on YT to troll or to vent their bad moods at strangers. You'll see the most beautiful girls called fat and ugly in hopes that the comments will knock their self esteem. Talents get bashed too. And of course countless men on YT feel the need to let a female YouTuber know that they are fully aware she has breasts...

How about a compromise - yes to the microphone as long as she disables comments?

A few thousand followers is actually pretty good. I work with teenagers, they all have their own channel, with about 5 subscribers each.

It's the way of the industry now - I mean, look at Justin Bieber - he started off on Youtube.

I don't think there's anything wrong with her being on YouTube so long as she's JUST singing and not doing anything that she'll regret later in life, and surely you can see what she's posting?

So yes, I think you're being a bit OTT and refusing to buy her the mic isn't going to stop her, it's just preventing her from doing it better than she currently is.
