To hate the laughing at "lower class" people on here?

I know it gets disguised as laughing at certain children's names, phrases, etc, but there is a lot of threads on MN that is really about laughing at poorer people. Hate it.

The home decor thing. I was brought up to like old furniture, things with history and beauty.
I like real stuff like single glazed wooden windows. The mass produced stuff, I wouldn't sneer at it but at the same time it's not taken a lot of thought really. When someone asks if people like their sparkly shoe ornament or reclining leather sofa do you say the truth if it's no?? I wouldn't ask someone if they liked my stuff because I got it for me not them. I imagine some people think it's odd or too colourful but I couldn't give a stuff, I like it!

FridayFreddo · 05/10/2017 13:50

Theres lots of sneering at wealthy/upper class people too - eg politicians. Lots of vitriol directed at eg Theresa May. It's not all one way.

But I also think a lot of people exaggerate/lie about their own lives while they're posting as their MN persona.

Bluegrass · 05/10/2017 13:52

Anyone else here with a 6 figure salary reading Tippz’s posts and now doubting their own existence? Confused

Ijustwantaquietlife · 05/10/2017 13:53

Exactly 40k wage and 250k debt isn't middle class, that job could disappear tomorrow and in a few months have no job, home or anything to your name.

sinceyouask · 05/10/2017 13:53

It is sadly not uncommon for a poster suggesting a Polish name for her baby of Polish heritage to be told to either Anglicise the name or choose an English name because they are living in the UK.

Yes. My dc have Polish names. The names work perfectly well in English- think more Borys than Zbigniew, so for all intents and purposes, it's only the spelling that's any different day to day- but when I mentioned them on another thread a while ago I was criticised for not thinking how much more difficult their lives would be. I have one of the most boring first names ever, it sometimes seems as if every fourth girl in the UK in the 70s and 80s was given it, yet I have had to spell it to people many times over the years, and that really has not blighted my life.

Majormanner · 05/10/2017 13:56

i keep having this discussion with family- who would want to be on telly being mocked by the nation - think Jeremy Kyle - but apparently they are paid to be on there. I swing in thinking they bring it on themselves to they are clearly vulnerable idiots and this shouldnt be allowed

Couldn't be at all because as the PM she holds a great deal of POWER which she uses, from some perspectives, to keep the working classes down. Hmm

Taratill · 05/10/2017 13:56

How ridiculous to the PP who doesn't believe there are any real lawyers or teachers on here!

I am most definitely a solicitor , I work from home on a self employed basis so that I can spend time with my kids while they are young.

I don't earn as much as I would do if I went to work for a firm but that's a life style choice.

I think this thread is interesting. The racism is shocking, personally I couldn't care less what anyone chooses to call their kids.

WTF is cake smashing???

LaurieMarlow · 05/10/2017 13:58

Has everyone seen Grayson Perry's "A matter of taste"?

Everyone, but everyone should look at this. There's no excuse, all three episodes are on youtube. It's thoughtful, analytical and sympathetic across all classes in a way that many posters on here would do well to emulate.

One of the mistakes I think middle class people make is to believe that the working classes themselves see their culture as inferior and to conclude that the working classes are/should be aspiring towards middle class taste. That's just not the case in my experience.

Working class culture is different, many middle class people don't understand it at all (the Greyson Perry documentary is a brilliant intro) and many working class people I know want themselves and their children to thrive within it, rather than aspire 'upwards'.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 05/10/2017 14:03

I'm glad I am not the only one. The scene where the young couple burst through the 'class boundary' is very poignant for me (but probably not in the way that people think).

tippz · 05/10/2017 14:06

@bluegrass

Anyone else here with a 6 figure salary reading Tippz’s posts and now doubting their own existence?

It's OK. There are no regular posters on here on a six figure salary. Only in their dreams

@Taratill

I am most definitely a solicitor

Of course you are dear....

Taratill · 05/10/2017 14:08

tippz you have most definitely got a problem.

WaxOnFeckOff · 05/10/2017 14:09

Ha, I don't fit anywhere. Average salary but no mortgage as paid off (live in 4 bed "exec" home) , brought up in total poverty but to working parents in a rough council estate. Went straight to work, no Uni, DH earns buttons in a job he loves - similar background, also went straight to work but latterly obtained 2 degrees. He was a stay at home parent. we are a shoes on house, no velvet furniture, no private school, say dinner or tea depending on whether it's the main meal or not. Shop in sainsburys or waitrose....

I imagine most people aren't a cliche either.

RoseWhiteTips · 05/10/2017 14:09

Of course you are dear....

Oh dear. You are trying to wind the poster up so I trust she will ignore your bait and you. It is a common trick often used by those who lack self esteem.

HandbagKrabby · 05/10/2017 14:12

There's definitely an assumption that class is a ladder and the people you assume are lower down the rungs than you are desperate to climb higher. I think most folk just get on with life and if you're that concerned with where someone buys their consumer goods or what they call their kids you need to have a rethink about getting on with your own.

There's a lot of posters on mn who seem to need a lot of reassurance their getting their middle class signifiers 'right' (what do you think of this boden dress? What about Farrow and Balls Elephant Dung for the boot room? Which centre parcs is best at Whitsun? Is this too much organic yoghurt for a 5 year old? Etc etc) Just live your life and do stuff you like Smile

ditzyglamour · 05/10/2017 14:12

Daisy you are missing my point. I don't see tea as a main meal!! Apparently most northerners do!!

Bluntness100 · 05/10/2017 14:12

There are no regular posters on here on a six figure salary

I can categorically assure you there is. Why do you have such an issue with successful women?

Lovemusic33 · 05/10/2017 14:13

I hate this about mumsnet, some people really are stuck up their own assess. The cake smash thread reminded me of being at school, it was bullying, if you don't like how someone does something then keep your nose out, the poor woman only wanted cake advise.

What makes me sad is these people are probably raising their children to be just as judgemental, this is where bullies come from.

RoseWhiteTips · 05/10/2017 14:15

Today 14:12 ditzyglamour

... I don't see tea as a main meal!! Apparently most northerners do!!

You are generalising which clearly betrays a degree of ignorance.

DaisyDrip · 05/10/2017 14:17

ditzyglamour

I am a northerner and most northerners do NOT see tea as a main meal. Most northerners see tea as I described above. You are generalising badly and wrongly.

wannabestressfree · 05/10/2017 14:17

Mmmmm
Well I most definitely am a teacher 👨‍🏫 I am just off sick at the moment (chemo starts next wed)
And my kids eat tea (something I chisel out of the freezer, order, or make myself- this week I have been positively industrious) as a main meal.
And I am southern.
So nrrrrr

User843022 · 05/10/2017 14:18

'Daisy you are missing my point. I don't see tea as a main meal!! Apparently most northerners do!!'
It's what you give the dc at 4 or 5pm, dinner is after 7pm imo and I'm not a northerner.

KERALA1 · 05/10/2017 14:20

Yes Bluegrass Blush. Off top of head can think of at least 5 women in that category was out with 2 of them last night (plus me of course) Grin.

Not sure some people have any idea of what you actually have to do in some cases to earn a salary like that. It sure ain't compatible with seeing your kids! I essentially worked all the time, day and night, with international travel at the drop of a hat. Plus if you earn a salary like that theres a good chance your partner does...

WaxOnFeckOff · 05/10/2017 14:24

We have dinner most nights, usually between 5 and 6pm. I don't have tea because I've had lunch in the middle of the day, if I then have tea then I've had no dinner! :o

KERALA1 · 05/10/2017 14:25

God if I were sad/weird enough to lie about my profession on an anonymous forum I would certainly say I was something more interesting than a solicitor its hardly a rare or exciting job Grin.
